Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Pontius - wow, you sure write a lot of Mrs. Pax stories. Is there anything you'd like to share with the rest of us?
End of quote

Actually they just seem to fit the storyline. Geez, thanks to you southern Boys. Dr. Quinn the nymph wants me. Mrs Pax wants to take a broom to me, and Mrs pontius is up in arms about something all the time. Which one of you said you guys would "Teach us northerners about women" ????

You've all "Taught" me enough thank you very much. HEHE.

Pontius had an evil plan. A very evil one. The mark two worked for the particular animal family dialed so he could set it to bear and turn Mrs. Pax into a bear. His mate could be together again with his wife. Then, once animal to human was worked out, he could turn them back. The key was how to lure both of them into the same room when they weren't speaking to each other. Hmmmmmm. Then again Pontius thought about what bear she might be. With my luck she'd be a California Grizzly, the meanest biggest bear of em all. Shuddering, he decided against that course of action.

“What do we have” said Pontius
He was aboard the Pegasus for a final briefing session before the POSSe set out on the mission.

“We have the Co-ordinates for in the Arcean space sector” said killa chewing on his haluci-eucalyuptus.. “You sure you don’t want to try some of this, Poncho” and then fell off his chair giggling “where has everybody gone”… he staggered up “oh there you are, thought you could hide from me did you?”

“Jaws, why did you have to get him more of that stuff?” the suave penguin asked.

“After the incident with the MWC and Cyphers droppear training he’s a nervous wreck” replied Jaws “but I won’t get him any more”

“Quack” said Pontius
“It’s ‘Q’ now” replied the purple duck
“Ok ‘Q’ what did you manage to glean from the prisoner”
“Ah well, just I had his mind, it was coming to the front, I could detect a trace of ANZACS influence, and then it melted”
“What did”
“his brain”… there was a gasp around the room

“so far it would seem we have the Euro Alliance, the ANZACS, Arcean Co-ordinates, The Canadian Federation and possibly the Yor all involved in this conspiracy” Wild Wombat stated

“We can discount the ANZACs” said Pontius, they’re too busy worrying about us, for us to be worrying about them, “They even think we are going to fall for the Warp into a black hole trick, I mean we invented it, what they don’t realise that we have forwarded the co-ordinates in that sector to Beckers under the pretence of being made a senator for them”

“Very very nice, very very evil” hissed ajm

“Well, it obvious mates” announced Cypher “I do like this look”

“What is?” asked Pontius

“We will have to go to the Arcean co-ordinates, it a moon orbiting the planet system Gauss”

“I agree, but this time you will go together, I’ll stay here and look after the starships, children and women again” said Pontius holding his head in his hands.

“Diddle diddle doo dah dah dah”
“Diddle diddle doo dah dah dahhhh”
“Diddle diddle doo dah dah de dah”
“Diddle diddle doo dah dahhhhhhhhhh”
“dum dum dum dum dum huh”

“Sorry” grinned Jaws “that’s the Good, the Bad and the Ugly”
“we shall go forth as the Maginificent Seven to finally rid the galaxy of this conspiracy and bring decent beer back to all human so we can make a nice fat profit”

“Can I be Robert Vaughn” said Hurley
“only if I can be Yul Brynner” Jaws quickly added
“I’ll be Horst Bucholz” said Cypher, the others just laughed
“Count me in for James Coburn” piped ajm
“I think I would make a good Steve McQuack” said the psychic one
“guess that makes Charles Bronson, growled Wombat”

They looked at Killa… He stood up on his chair and fell off again laughing, “I’ll be the other one”

Pontius looked at them “you guys baffle me, but I’m glad you’re on my side” With that he left the briefing room to prepare for his babysitting duties. He shuddered, “why oh why can’t I go on one of these” he thought…. “Next time, next time…. Now where is the wombat day care centre better check everything is alright… I’m the emperor dammit”

Rainy Nights

First Night - Seven Gunslingers Mount Up

Kit tried to sneak past the seven pirates, but unfortunately, he’s no spymaster.

“Kit!” Yul Brynner waved him over with his flipper. “Whatcha doin’ on the Pegasus?”

“Just dropping off some reports.” He came closer to the group, but continued to look off to his left.

“Reports? On our ship?” Steve McQueen turned his beak with a quizzical look. “Don’t you usually report to the Doom?”

“I did, but I was told my information has something to do with y’all’s mission.”

James Coburn leaned his thorny head over to see what Kit was hiding. “Yowzers! Where’d you get that shiner?”

There was no point in dancing around the topic now. These bums would never let a good story go… especially that evil Brad Dexter. Kit took a deep breath and let out a long sigh.

“I was scouting the Illuminati Lodge. As you know, there are a lot of questions to be answered. Why would a ‘secret’ organization announce the location of one of their meeting halls?” The gathered pirates all nodded. “As I was nonchalantly leaning against a building across from the lodge, I overheard someone speaking to himself. He said, ‘does this mean us sleepers can come out in the open?’” The raiders who had eyebrows raised their eyebrows. “Naturally, I approached this fellow and pretended to also be a hidden member. I was doing a great job! So much so that he invited me to come with him through a secret entrance. Well rather than heading to the lodge, he led me into a dark alleyway. It was the perfect place for a secret entrance I tell ya! And then this happened.” Kit pointed to bruise around his eye.

“Well?!?!” Charles Bronson was tapping his foot as though he was getting ready for another disco tune. “Exactly how did ya get it?”

“Um... ” Kit nervously scratched the back of his neck.

“C’mon!” Horst Bucholz bellowed with his deep bear voice. “Out with it!”

Kit looked up and shouted “IT WASN’T A GUY!!!

Silence.

And then hearty laughs erupted from the gang, echoing down every corridor.

“What’s the problem, Kit? Need glasses?” Robert Vaughn raised both slick wings to his eyes, which he crossed for extra ribbing.

“No! She was wearing a trench coat and a hat!” Kit protested in vain. “She clobbered me once we were well into the alley.” The crowd kept laughing. “You seven samurai can kiss my butt!”

“Now now Kit. Don’t get upset.” Brad Dexter tried to console him with his consoling eyes, yet only managed to look forlorn. “We don’t want you to go on another shaving rampage!”

Kit mumbled to himself. "If God hadn't meant for them to be sheared, he wouldn't have made them sheep.”

With that comment he turned and left his buddies to their guffaws.

The Posse is sure a colorful cast of characters. Don't they look good in those pictures?

Note to future Posse members: Seal might be a poor choice when there is a polar bear and a great white shark hanging around. :d Not unless it was one very mean, bad tasting seal.

The Ethics of Conquest

Inside his bunker, Seth Lewd waited paitently. The Posse was approaching the Arcean planet he was hiding on, but he was not concerned. Indeed, he was pleased. He knew the Retox would be passing through on a resupply mission, and had planned to capture its bounty of booze to increase his powers, by having more mital-coholians in his bloodstream than anyone before him. He did not view the extra ships en route as a threat, but an opportunity. For the fabled transmorgrifier was on the Pegasus. He had pirated the pirates' porn from the pirates themselves, but even the alien fetishes they filmed were too soft-core for his tastes. His dark power came from taking his vices to new levels of depravity and lewdness. With the transmorgrifier, he could turn a whole planet of aliens into a variety of new animals to have his way with, starting with this pathetic crowd of Arceans. He knew the machine could not be set to a specific setting. But the surprise just added to the fun...

The Seth Lewd closed his eyes and laughed in his underground bunker, his fortress of solitude, his...

***

"Seth! SETH! Your dinner's getting cold."

The teenage Seth looks around his parent's basement. No! This isn't real! He is the Overlord of the Metaverse, master of his own fate, emperor of -

"SETH! I'M NOT TELLING YOU AGAIN!!!"

He sighs, takes off his black cape, and heads up the stairs...

***

"Bloody flashbacks.", the adult Seth muttered to himself. But this was no dream - he was here, hidden in his bunker, like he had trained for all those years ago.He made a note to overdose on his psychiatric medication. For a Seth Lewd did nothing in moderation...

---

Quack and his flunkies toured what was left of the breeding facility.

"I'm sure this wasn't the only facility they had."
"Well, one of our spies says there's another one on one of their battle-cruisers, but it's too heavily guarded for him to get into that section of the ship."
"I'm surprised they didn't get the Sectoids in on this. They're the masters of bizarre cross-breeding."
"We weren't interested."

Quack turned around and looked at one of the skinny bug-eyed Sectoids.
"What?" he slowly asked.
"Too boring. I mean, super-babies? Come on! Where's the tag line! Where's the bizarre angle? It's been done to death."
"How long have you known about this?"
"Oh, ages. But no right-minded Sectoid would take on a job like this. We've got a reputation to think of."
"I don't want to be type-cast as a hack cloner.", the other Sectoid added.

The Sectoids scoffed as they read the Torian medical reports.
"Pfft, all they used were hormones, drugs, all that boring shit. Easy to fix, too easy."

They whispered something in Quack's ear.

"Excellent.", he replied. "Contact the spy on board the ship."

---

On board the MWC battle-cruiser "kryo-kruza"

Kryofx smiled as he entered the cloning facility. One of the Torian doctors welcomed him at the security door.

"Excellent timing, sir. It's feeding time."

Kryofx nodded, and walked through to the main ward, to see -

"NOO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, YOU IDIOTS?"

The Torian doctor was stunned.

"What is wrong? These babies are all happy, and healthy. Even quite cute - for humans, that is."

"Look what you're feeding them!"

Kryofx grabbed one of the baby's bottles and showed it to the doctor. It was a bottle of Bud Light, with extra words penciled in so the label read "Bud Ultra-Light Baby Formula".

"Where did you get this?"

"From the last shipment." The doctor pointed to a case of Bud Light, which had "BABY FOOD" written on it in texta. Kryofx emptied all the bottles out of the box, and watched in disbelief as a card floated out from the bottom. He picked it up, and read:

"Gr33tZ fRoM tH3 P0553!"

On the back, the card said

"Present this card for a 5% discount on 'Arwan Does Riverdell' at any participating GROSS franchise. Limit one coupon per customer. Stocks are limited. Proof of age required."

"I don't understand," the Torian doctor interjected. "The label said it was approved for use on babies."

Kryofx slapped his head. The next generation of the MWC would be a band of inter-galactic idiots, just like their fore-fathers before them. He took the plastic teat off the Ultra-Light, drank some himself, then started plotting revenge against the southern pirates.

---

TheQuack sat quietly in his office. "Was that the right thing to do? Hell, I wasn't tampering with nature, I just set it straight again. Besides, they're so much more fun to play with when they're morons."

The comm sounded. "Sir, the other posse ships are moving off."

"Form up with them, and arrange for a shuttle to the Pegasus. I have matters to discuss."

Road Trip

"YEE-HAW! RIDE ON, Y'ALL!"

Killa kicked the side of his plastic rocking horse, willing it to go faster and faster. Jaws and Wombat laughed at Koala's drug-induced antics as they gently rocked on their own rocking horses, which had recently been installed on the bridge. Meanwhile, Quack sat on the floor, throwing a baseball against the wall and catching it in his glove.

"Wrong movie, McQueen!" said the wombat cheerfully.

"It's my party, and I'll pitch if I want to!" Quack replied. He went back to throwing the baseball against the wall, quietly singing "pitch if i want to, pitch if i waa-nt to, you'd pitch one too if you were stuck here tooo, doo doo doo da daa!"

The wombat and shark looked at each other uneasily as they rocked on their rocking-horses. Long voyages did strange things to people's minds.

"We'd better check in on Cypher", the shark muttered.
"Computer, where is CypherPax?"
"Retox, porn deck, studio E."

"That dirty old bear." the wombat said as he opened a channel.

"Five BCs says he's going for wookies." said the shark as he waved a fiver under wombat's nose.
"Nar, he always had a thing for elf maidens."
"Are you kidding? You remember all those wookie fantasies he was talking about in his sleep on that camping trip..."
"Yeah, but that was about BEING a wookie! He's pretty close to being a wookie now, so he can do his thing with the elf maidens!"

"Who's getting it off with the elf maidens?" asked Cypher.

The shark and wombat realized the comm-link was active already. Cypher was in the studio with a few fully-dressed men and women, but no wookies or elf maidens were in sight.

The shark and the wombat sighed.

"What's doin, Cypher?"
"The Bundy Rum lawyers got in touch with me. Apparently, they were going to sue me for being an unauthorised Bundy Bear. The only way I could talk them out of it was to do some more ads. Oh, I don't mind, it gives me a chance to practise my drop-bear skills. I just wish the porn stars we conscripted would stop getting undressed... well, until we've finished filming, at least. I'll be back in a few minutes."
"You got Ashlyn there?"
"Hell, no! What sort of negligent parent do you take me for? I left her with someone responsible, a real authority figure."

---

"FIRE!!!"

As Sergeant I.M.Hard yelled orders out, the pirate redshirts launched a barrage of rockets at the training room's wall. The rockets were only used for training, but they still exploded with a decent blast.
Perched on the sergeant's shoulder, Ashlyn grinned and clapped excitedly.

She reached down for the rocket launcher in the sergeant's hands.

Instinctively, the sergeant yelled, "You are not cleared to operate the TGX-7 tactical rocket launcher! You will NOT touch it until you have passed the final qualification shoot - DO YOU GET ME, SOLDIER?"

Ashlyn looked in the sergeant's eyes and began to pout.

"Oh, please, don't look at me like that, not in front of the guys... okay, okay, I'll give you a quick go. Here, I'll take the weight of it. Now, you hit that switch to take the safety off..."

---

Cypher returned to the bridge, and took his place on his rocking horse. It immediately collapsed under his weight.

"I don't think they had Bundy bears in mind when they designed them, Cyphie."

Quack grinned. That was one less rocking sound to drive him insane.

"Don't worry, Cypher!" the wombat said. "I've got lots more rocking horses in storage - surplus from the Frisky Wombat Daycare Center."

The grin faded from Quack's face as a new reinforced rocking horse was brought in.

"Damn it, Jaws, you had to choose the Magnificent Seven, didn't you? Didn't you?" the duck snapped.

"Jaws? Who is Jaws? I am Yul Brynner." replied the shark in the deepest voice he could.

"I'll fucking come up there and smash you one, I will!" the duck said as he jumped up.

"Uh, uh, uh!" the shark said. "You'll have to ride hard if you want to catch me!" He started rocking furiously on his rocking horse.

The duck roared, jumped on his own rocking horse, and rode as fast as the horse's spring could take him.
Eventually, they both got tired, and laughed.

"That wasn't so bad, was it?"
"No, I guess not. Fine, let's go."

Now that all the magnificent seven were here and on their horses, they started rocking in unison.

"Are we there yet?" the drugged koala asked.
"No."
"But we're not moving!" The koala pointed at the bridge stations all around them. "I know what's wrong! We're supposed to be riding into the sunset!" the koala blurted out. The screen just showed a lot of stars whizzing past.

"That's only at the end of the movie, you idiot!"
"I want a sunset, God damn it!"

The penguin got off his horse, walked over to a bridge console, and typed a few commands in. The starscape view was quickly replaced by a magnificent mid-western sunset on Earth.

"Now that's a sunset!" the koala said happily.
The duck sighed. This was going to be a long road trip.

The Galactic Peace Ball on the Survey Ship of Doom

It was an entirely normal day on the Survey Ship of Doom. Every pirate had a job to do, and did it well.

As well, the inaugural Galactic Peace Ball was to be held on the ship that night, and representatives from all of the human empires were invited. It was to be a gala event. An event to be remembered and savoured. An event to bring the human empires together. Preparations were prepared. The guests were on the ship. Excitement was growing.

The Mess

The Great White shark looked at the noticeboard with interest. “Listen to this Hurls” he said, as he read the large notice with gold trimming.

“Special Announcement. The Galactic Peace Ball is to be held tonight in the Ship of Doom Ballroom. All officers are required to attend. All NCOs are required to be on escort duty. All enlisted pirates are required to stay in their cabins and stay off the plonk. Any serious transgressions will lead to a trial and execution. Pay the proper respect to all visitors on the ship, whether dead or undead. This Ball will bring all humans together in a warm and convivial atmosphere of comradeship and fraternity. You have been warned.”

Hurley rubbed his chin with his flipper. “Hmmm. What does transgression mean?”

Jaws shook his head doubtfully: “Got me. Is it like crossdressing? Anyway, I like the bit about a trial AND execution. Doesn’t leave much doubt about our Captain’s justice.”

Hurley looked bemused: “Well, you know Jaws, military justice is to justice, as military music is to music.”

Hurley eyed Jaws clothes. Jaws was wearing rather odd tartan trousers which ended at long socks, and a tartan cap. “And where are you off to?”

Jaws swished his club along the ground. “Thought I’d get a spot of golf in, what.”

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Killa Koala sobbed. “And then at school they called me hairy arse! And I wasn’t even a dropbear then! Why, even my teacher said….”

Dr Quinn looked into the distance. She had once been a happy, flirty girl. Now the weight of years weighed heavily upon her. When she pretended to give therapy, she had to listen to the nonsense that her patients sprouted. And always in her mind, in addition to the voices, was that special moment. The moment she savoured still. That moment when Gerakken’s suave sophistication fell away and became naked fear. She licked her lips with her red, pointy tongue. Oh yes, she could still taste it. The fear.

“So that was my childhood. Things got worse when I was a teenager of course.” Killa looked angry. “Why, can you believe what my father said to me. That I was…”

Yes the fear. The naked fear. His naked handsome fear. Gerakken’s handsome, bovine eyes with naked fear etched in…

“Dr Quinn, do you agree?” Killa squirmed on the nutters couch in order to look around at Dr Quinn. “Doctor?”

Dr Quinn looked sharply at the koala. “Mr Koala, you know that you are not supposed to seek comments. Or indeed to look at me during a session. However, I do agree. Is that the time? Well, I’ll see you same time next week.”

Killa got up and went to the door, forlornly.

“Oh, and Killa” said Dr Quinn. Killa turned at the door. “Here’s a nice block of delicious chocolate.” Killa grinned. He really felt he had made progress today.

The Captain’s Quarters

Pontius ran along the beach. The blue sea lapped the shore. The white sand sparkled in the golden sunlight. The warm air caressed his muscled body. “There he is”, tittered the dark-skinned beauties to each other. Pontius glanced back: they were almost upon him! Pontius skipped around the cove sprightly. But not too sprightly. He suddenly tripped and fell by the surf, his loose cossie slipping down across his washboard stomach. Within seconds he was swamped by a giggling harem of beauties, fighting and scragging each other to be the one who would win top position.

“Pontius! Are you zoning me out again?”

Pontius eyed Mrs Pilot with a startled look. A look like a bunny rabbit caught in headlights. Mrs Pilot was standing in their kitchen, rolling a newspaper vigorously in her fierce hands. But Pontius had long years of practice in such situations, and quickly turned the look to one of surrender and contrition.

“Never hunnybun. I’ve heard every word you were screaming.”

“Well then, what did I just compare you to?” Mrs Pilot weighed the tightly-rolled newspaper in her strongest hand.

“Um.” Pontius mind whirled. He thought of, and discarded, a dozen really cool things that he might be compared to. He studied Mrs Pilot again: her flaring nostrils, wild eyes, flushed face and slightly ragged breathing all suggested an emotion which he could place. He sensed that Mrs Pilot was not in the happiest of moods. He briefly wondered whether he should just call her out, but then realised the newspaper was the Saturday edition. The real estate section always hurt the worst. Still, Pontius felt lucky today. “Why paddlecakes, you compared me to a…”

Bakka’s Cabin

Bakka was a marriage counsellor by profession and generally a switched on sorta guy. But sometimes he was tired and words escaped him. He pushed his seat away from the computer and looked up at his missus. “Come on now, flapper. Cut me some slack. You know my computer time is the second best thing in my life.” Mrs Bat’s lip quivered. “Ahh really fruity, she’ll be right.”

Kit on the Make

Kit gaped at the apparition standing before him. She was beautiful. Her long fingers were perfect for typing. Her bifocals magnified her eyes and created an aura of mystery. He looked her up and down. She was built to be loved. Now, Kit was generally not shy, but goofing around with the boys and making a play for a goddess were two very different things. His direct approach sometimes had catastrophic results. He could still remember, as if it was yesterday, the ‘situation’ with little Mary-Lou at primary school. And then there was…. He shook his head. Let’s just say he was haunted by some of the encounters he’d had over the years. But this was going to be different. This was it! She is made for me, he thought, firmly. She oozes intelligence. And sex appeal. Kit already had the details for the wedding mentally in place: one of Wombie’s nippers for the cute flowergirl; photos in the botanical gardens. I bet she’s a doctor or a diplomat, he thought. He froze: is she married? Kit glanced at her wedding ring finger but there was no ring. Kit tried to settle his thumping heart. Alright, this is it. Time to go in.

Kit ambled insouciantly up to the girl. She looked at him.

Kit took a breath: “Hi there snookums, Are you lost ma'am? Because heaven's a long way from here.”

She stared at Kit, her face devoid of emotion.

Kit flushed: “Um, is your father a thief? Because he stole the stars from the skies and put them in your eyes!”

She raised an eyebrow.

Kit was struggling now. But he was nothing if not determined. He had a golden oldie which he used in desperate circumstances, and this current impasse certainly qualified.

“Are you looking for Mr. Right, or Mr. Right Now? Baby, you must be a broom, cause you just swept me off my feet... Were your parents Greek gods? Because it takes two gods to make a goddess.”

Kit realised he was babbling. He closed his mouth sharply and looked imploringly at the girl.

The girl stirred and said in a deep voice “Actually, I’m a bloke. If you’ll excuse me.” And stalked off.

The Gazebo

Killa Koala and Wild Wombat studied the gazebo. It had been hard to get to without a paved path, but Mrs Pax had assured the boys that Mr Pax was within days of completing the landscaping. The gazebo had a slight tilt to the left, but was otherwise sound.

“Wombie, I’ve narrowed the list down to who I think my long lost son is.”

Wild looked at Killa with surprise: “Who?”

“Well, Mr Pink 7 was a megalomaniac. But he was apparently short and reasonably intelligent, if misguided. He was a King Rat sorta guy, much like my son would be, I imagine. And he was an orphan taken off a freighter the pirates had sacked.”

Wild nodded and said: “Certainly fits the profile. The other possibility?”

Killa looked worried. “Maybe KitWarrior. He was born on a freighter too, and he’s a bit of a ladies man. Sophisticated, friendly, always got something useful or otherwise to say…”

Wild looked uncertain. “But he’s tall and has none of your…mannerisms.”

Killa screwed his mouth to the left. “There is that. And I’m not sure I am old enough to be his father. Do we know his age?”

“Not a clue.”

A voice said, from no particular direction, “There is one other.”

Wild and Killa glared at the gazebo seat. “Gerakken sir. Enough already. We almost sat on you.” The seat waddled off.

Killa had a sudden thought: “But hang on. What did ya mean…there is one other…?”

The Ship of Doom Theatre: Matinee Session

Wild Wombat looked around wildly. “EBZ! Hurry up! We’re on!”

EBZ ran past, patting his cheeks. “The makeup artist put too much rouge on. My face is too red! I look like a bloody Princess!”

“How would he know”, muttered Killa.

“What did ya say?” shouted EBZ.

Killa blanched: “Nothing mate…I was muttering about this woody pinot.”

“You’ll keep.”

“Form up, form up” said Wombie in an agitated voice. The posse grabbed paws and flippers and fins, and with delicate balance, danced onto the stage.

Pontius looked askance at the chorus as they entered the stage, and with a raised eyebrow, began his number.

“I am the Captain of the Ship o’ Doom.”

The posse danced in a line behind Pontius: “And a right good captain, too!”

Killa tried to inch his way to the front and center of the chorus, but EBZ elbowed him on the nose.

Pontius glared at the pirates:
“You're very, very good,
And be it understood,
I command a right good crew.”

Killa bit EBZ on the calf. EBZ swung a fist which Killa easily ducked under. The posse sang:

“We’re very, very good,
And be it understood,
He commands a right good crew.”

Pontius raised his hands dramatically and hissed at the posse.

“Though related to a peer,
I can hand, reef, and steer,
And ship a selvagee;
I am never known to quail
At the fury of a gale,
And I'm never, never sick at sea!’

This was the bit that Wombie loved.

“What, never?”

“No, never!”

“What, never?”

“Hardly ever!”

“He's hardly ever sick at sea!
Then give three cheers, and one cheer more,
For the hardy Captain of the Ship o’ Doom!”

The posse danced off to thunderous applause. The pirates could never get enough of their favourite plays. And the theatre season on the Ship of Doom always started with HMS Ship of Doom and finished with The Pirates of Penance. It was traditional.

The Ship of Doom, Docking Bay 17

An Evil laugh echoes from docking bay 17. Striding over to the enticing, yet hysterical, howl, Killa's eyes happen upon a tall, solitary man. He steps in front of the fuzzy-brained creature, reaches up... and SLAPS him!

"Feel better?"

Kit rubs his cheek with an almost forlorn look. "Yes. Thanks mate."

In the eerie silence, they walk off in separate directions.
