Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Noooooooooo. You're mocking Killa's new philosophy. Mind you, it didn't do Donald Duck any good in the end either

Not at all. But a philosophy of flipping and a transmorgifrier in Pontius Pilot hands does lend itself to various humoroous abuses.

We didn’t quite get that one, but that’s Gerakken for you.

Gerakken can be no other than what he is. :) You had to dig pretty far back to find the series of posts where I debated that, Killa. I enjoyed reading your latest efforts, as well as the tales of the others. Has the Posse entered another golden age of stories?

Grrrrr This game is annoying me. It crashes, no problem. Suddenly upon reload, two civs declare war on me instantly off of previously warm relations and two wonders are built instantly before I can do a thing when they are out of money and don't have the production finished. I rload again twice and the wonders built kept changing. So they were given to them. Oh noooo no cheats in this game... Yeah right.
A day's worth of game playing down the drain. Grrrrrr.
You know, that's interesting. I have also noted changes when reloading a saved game - sector influence ratings are different, wars declared, etc. Anyone know what gives?
I had that happen on the old version of the game myself. I knew about the sector ratings not getting fully calculated on a reload, but I also had times when reloading would get wars declared on me (guaranteed, tried a few reloads in a row and it was always the same).

However, I haven't seen any "instant wonders" appearing on alien planets.
It's probably some developer humor to keep people from saving and reloading. But heck, it's downright annoying when through no fault of my own, I have to.
Influence isn't calced to its full extent on reload to save time. That's ok. But this wonder poofing and war declarations. Also it seems many a random event and alien demands now happen upon reload too and relations totally change diplo wise as well. It's almost as if the entire engine falls apart. Most annoying.
And it gets better. First turn I'm at war. Earth. Here comes the Torian Starfighter. I laugh at the puny thing. hahaha. Untill it takes out 2 death knights. aha aha waaaaaaaaaaah!!!
My internet connection is up for a minute so I'll be quick! I just assumed that the developers decided to often add an event (like a demand or a war) when you returned to a game (re-loaded). It sort of keeps things interesting. But it would be a problem if it meant previous good relations had been swept away...

I too have noted a wonder being miraculously built. One of my last games a minor race built a wonder when they were several thousand bcs in debt. I re-loaded about 6 turns earlier and checked their economy and sure enough they were heavily in debt back then as well. So I went through each turn and they completed the wonder again despite their debt. I wondered how that was possible...

The other thing I have noticed several times when I have re-loaded, is that a civ which would have built a wonder, which I then snap up after re-loading, builds another wonder instead. And this has happened for minor civs with only one planet! So it appears to me the game decides the civ will build a wonder and shuffles the deck to see which one.

A starfighter taking out a deathknight? I don't think so!

Terminator 4: Rise of the Raelians

Great Balls of Lightning

It was AFL Grand Final day, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground was packed with a capacity crowd. Collingwood had the ball, but they were stuck inside their half. Clement was about to kick the ball forward, when he saw a bright flash in the corner of his eye. He turned, and dropped the ball. No-one picked it up, as everyone was staring at the same thing he was - the crackling blue sphere of lightning that had appeared in the middle of the ground.

Wombat nearly choked on a pretzel, while Hurley stopped waving his magpies flag and stared in disbelief.
"What the hell? Someone's using our time-travel machine!"
"They - they can't be, it's been banned by the Gods themselves!"

The lightning disappeared, to reveal a naked man wearing a wizard's hat. The animals relaxed.
"Oh, it's only Ray the exhibitionist, out for more." muttered Hurley.

"Wizards own y'all!" screamed the naked Ray as he ran around the stadium.

"What's he saying?"
"Buggered if I know. Something about Wizard Home Loans, I think."

The streaker stopped, bowed to the crowd, and was enveloped in another bright ball. Everyone was silent as they watched the ball of lightning disappear. Then, Akamanis picked up the unguarded ball, turned, and kicked a goal from 45 meters out.

"You cheap ****", yelled Buckley as he punched Akamanis in the jaw.

As all the players joined in the melee, the crowd cheered, and the naked wizard was quickly forgotten.

---

Ray the Wanderer teleported back into his bachelor pad.

"I couldn't be happier with the way that turned out." he said to himself. He picked up his list of "100 Places I'd Like To Flash", crossed the MCG off the list, and looked at his next target. Then, he looked at the time and stopped. He had something else to take care of.

---

The drunken sailor staggered out of the pub. "Piss off!" yelled the bouncer, as he gave the sailor a good kick in the arse. Disappointed, the sailor sat on some steps around the corner. He decided to catch a quick nap there, hoping his breath would have cleared up in a few hours and he could get back in...

He was woken up by a loud crack and a blue flash. He opened his eyes, and stared in disbelief. There was a tall blonde woman standing in front of him, completely naked. She had unbuttoned his shirt and was just starting on his pants. He nodded eagerly, and grinned.

The woman took one look at him, frowned, and knocked him out with a kick to the side of the head. She pulled his shirt over her bare shoulders, and continued working on his pants.

Big Night Out

The clerk slammed an assault rifle on the counter, next to an anti-matter shotgun, a pistol, and a combat knife.

"Anything else?" he asked.

The blonde stranger looked around the gun shop.

"A phased plasma pulse-laser in the forty watt range?"

"Just what you see, miss. Any one of them's ideal for home defense. Which'll it be?"

"All of them."

---

The clerk slammed a can of deodorant on the counter, next to a cheap wig, a toothbrush, and a bar of soap.

"Anything else?" he asked.

Ray looked around the beauty parlor.

"One of those little clippers to get nose hairs?"

"Just what you see, mate. Any one of them's ideal for a night out on the town. Which'll it be?

"All of them."

---

Cotal shifted uncomfortably on a bar stool.

"I can't believe BlueSteel made us wear these tight uniforms." she muttered.

Rainbird looked at the skin-tight catsuits they were wearing, and laughed.

"Come on, Flowergirl, you've got to think of the power these things give us. BlueSteel's nothing but putty in our fingers. With a whisper in his ear and a kiss on his cheek, we could run this ANZAC empire."

"Yes, I'm sure we could... but is that all you want out of life?"

Rainbird looked at Cotal curiously. "Why, what do you want?"

"Oh, I don't know. Once I've set up a nice empire, I might think about settling down, maybe getting married and having a few kids. It seems like everyone's having children nowadays."

"You've got plenty of time for that. Besides, how much time do you think you'll have to dominate the Metaverse once you're married with kids? You might as well enjoy the single life while you've got it."

Cotal sighed. "I suppose. Where you headed tonight?"

"I know a good leather bar down the road. Guys wearing dog collars, just begging to be dominated. All that good stuff - should be fun."

"Nah, that's not my scene. I'll stick around here, they said there'd be some retro on later."

The women said their goodbyes, and Rainbird strolled out.

---

"You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone, gone, gone, whoa-o-o-oh"

Ray had carved out his own space on the dance floor with his groovin' moves. They hadn't actually attracted anyone, but his wild thrusts and sporadic pirouettes had already hit a few people nearby, and no-one else wanted to take the risk. Ray didn't care, he was having too much fun. Then, he saw the flowergirl sitting at a table, at the opposite end of the dance floor, and remembered why he was here. He made sure the wig was still in place, straightened his shirt, and began to strut over.

A blonde woman got in his way.

She wasn't bad, Ray mused to himself, but he already had a target. He tried to get around her.

The woman smiled, and pulled a blaster out of her handbag.

---

Cotal looked up at the sound of gunfire, and saw the crowd erupt in panic. As everyone pushed for the exits, Cotal was caught up in the crush. A hand reached out from the crowd and grabbed her shoulder.

"Come with me if you want to live." said a blonde woman with a blaster.

The blonde fired a few shots in the air, and pushed through the door, dragging Cotal along. They reached a corvette, and the blonde pushed Cotal into the passenger seat. Cotal was still in shock, but started to realize what was going on.

"Um, thanks for getting me out of there, but I don't need a lift, really." said Cotal as she reached for the door.

The blonde calmly pointed the blaster at Cotal.

"Just sit down and shut up."

"What the hell is going on? Who are you, anyway?"

"Ashlyn Pax, Captain, GROSS Space Marine Corps."

A History Lesson

"You're - you're lying! I know Ashlyn, she's just a little girl."

"True. But I am Ashlyn Pax... just not the one you know. I'm from the future."

"Didn't that time machine get shut down after all the pirates' joy-rides?"

"We didn't have much choice. This was a measure of last resort."

Cotal didn't know what to say. She sat there silently, and looked out the window for a moment as the corvette took off. Then, she turned back to Ashlyn. "Why are you here?"

"On August 29th, 2217, the war started. A massive alpha strike of anti-matter missiles. All this - everything - was gone. There were survivors. Here. There. Nobody knew who started it. The Fellowship thought it was GROSS, GROSS thought it was the ANZACs, the ANZACs thought it was the Euros."

Ashlyn pulled Cotal close to her.
"It was the aliens, Cotal. The aliens."

The flowergirl reacted with disbelief.
"They can't alpha strike, they're too stupid! And with AMMs? Impossible!"

Ashlyn sighed.
"That's what we thought. But the resistance dug through what was left of Stardock's records, and the logs speak for themselves. At 3:47pm, Ray took his son, Jay, into his command nexus and gave him the chance to run an empire. By 4:32, Jay had beaten his first gigantic maso. By 5:13, he had written a cranking guide on how to complete a gigantic maso in 30 minutes. His powers grew, and grew. By 5:39, he could see what the aliens were going to do before they moved.

"And then - at 6:14pm - everything changed. He became one with the Metaverse. They say he got smart...a new order of intelligence. Then he saw all people as a threat, not just the ones on the other side. Decided our fate in a microsecond... extermination."

"All across the metaverse, the alien races united under a new banner - they called themselves Raelians - Aliens of Ray. In the blink of an eye, the aliens crushed the human empires. The pirates organized some resistance, but it was only a matter of time before they were overrun. The last thing they managed to do was re-activate their time machine and send me on this mission."

Cotal interrupted the story. "But how did Jay do all that? And why did the aliens call themselves Raelians if Jay was responsible?"

"Jay had the power, but he was on Ray's leash. Ray was the puppet master... he always had been since day one..."

Ashlyn stared out into space for a moment, lost in the past. Then, she shook herself back to reality. She still had a job to do.

"The wizards are keen on prophecies - they always have been. Four days ago, Ray was killing dungeon rats in an effort to "level up" when he found an ancient prophecy. The prophecy said that one day, a powerful wizard of evil and an equally powerful cleric of good would have a child, and that child would become the ultimate force in the Metaverse. As we speak, Ray is doing everything in his power to fulfill that prophecy. History records that he succeeded. I am here to stop him. It's as simple as that."

"Why are you telling me all this?" asked Cotal nervously.

Ashlyn took a deep breath, and looked the flowergirl in the eye.

"Jay's full name was Jay the Wandering Flower Salesman. He's your son, Cotal. Your unborn son."

To be continued...

This story was inspired by a brilliant post from Citizen Jeff Desilva:

Look at Cotal go!!
Imagine if Ray and Cotal ran away together and formed their own empire. It would be in the Top Ten just from their scores alone.

Imagine if they had a love-child. It would be capable of churning out 2 or 3 Gigantic Maso games a day.

For awhile though it would just be drooling and taking a dump in it's pants, so we are safe for now.

A starfighter taking out a deathknight? I don't think so!
End of quote

Swear... Not only did it take out 2 of my death knights, but it survived an attack from a Drengin frigate, and limped home to repair itself. I then checked the game by retiring and as I thought, there is an anomoly. Gotta be some corruption in the save somewhere as I loaded an earlier game and it's not there. So I lost a day's work in effect. It's too bad too. I was really looking forward to going after Sluggy Von Rictoven only to find out the save is corrupted somehow.

And yes I have seen that in the normal course of play. Minor civ builds wonder, so you check. They didn't have the moola.. You then build it out from under them by reloading a turn earlier and they build another one (thus eliminating the possibility that that particular planet had finished it by building it.) The only reasonable conclusion is it's getting one given to it at random. Something the devs said wouldn't happen.

HEHE but that reminds me of a story.

Sluggy Von Richthoven. Part 1a

While on routine patrol in sector gama delta 6 in Galaxy Delta Delta Delta, a Masochists wet dream, Pontius, in the Scimitar noticed a patrol was late. Cassiopia dear Scan the Patrol sector. I want to know where that Patrol is.

Nothing Dear

WHAT!!! 12 Cobra attack fighters and you get nothing? Patch the Scimitar through on their frequency. Yellow leader this is the scimitar over? Nothing but static was returned.
"How could 12 cobra attack starfighters just disappear?" thought Pontius.
"Helmsman, bear right to zero six zero, 1/4 impulse. Lets check this out ourselves," Pontius commanded.

Suddenly over the com. "This is Red 6 Red 6 in trouble, Mayday maday over"

The craft was brought up on the viewscrean. It was badly damaged. A total wreck by the looks of her.

Pilot stop all thrust, be prepared for emergency beamout.

The Pilot was taken to Dr. Quinn. Cassiopia hated Dr. Quinn and the feeling was mutual. But nevertheless, she was the communications specialist and she usually could understand mumbling near dead patients better than anyone.

Pontius entered the infirmary.

Airman Rand a few questions. What hit you?

Rand summoned up the strengh to speak. "Jumped by the Torians sir!!!"

"How many?" asked the Capn.

"I don't rightly know sir. Maybe only one, two. They were everywhere, and they were nowhere." Rand said. "It or they were like a ghost."

Pontius: One alien craft. 11 Cobra attack starfighters. Only a frigate or better could do that. You must have seen it. How did you know it's Torian?

Rand: Sir, it was green. And on the side was painted 'Abandon all hope. Die Humans Die!!!' It was like it was invincible... We just couldn't hit it....And when we did our weapons just bounced off. And they weren't even bothering to run with shields. But it was only a starfighter. I saw it take out a drengin frigate with me own eyes.

Pontius: A DRENGIN FRIGATE!!!! WITH ONE TORIAN STARFIGHTER!!! Lie back down there. Easy Matey. You just get your rest. Oh and Rand; speak of this to no one. We don't need rumors flying around here.

But the rumors did fly. A second patrol, a third patrol were sent out but turned up nothing. By the next day rumors of a Sluggy Von Richthoven were floating aboard the Scimitar.

To be Continued: Be advised, this one may be a thread jumper. HEHE.

I do it a lot, I guess the computer does too.

Actually it can't. When I did my lil experiment to determine if the puter was cheating, I reloaded on the turn before Cotal. There's no way it could have come from that far negative to positive. Remember. this was a minor civ with only one planet. No way it could have done it in one turn. It just doesn't have the resources.

As to the current game, it's got an anomoly in it. I figured that out by retiring... It had mpoints of 2000 then when I hit the submit or no screen it had zero. So I have to go back to an earlier load without it in it and hope it doesn't get in it again. Lost a day's work. (about 1.5 hours actual game time) heheh.

Oh when I want to buy something, I just lower my spending to minimum a few turns, get moolah and do it. It takes fewer turns to do it that way than to buy it, go in the red and spend zero to get out of debt. Just a lil tip.
