Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

dum dum… dum dum… dum dum dum…

"I wish you'd stop singing that." Quack said as Jaws approached behind him. "You're the only one walking around on flippers here, it's pretty easy to hear who's coming."

"Well, I think it adds a touch of class. You just wish you had a better theme song than 'Duck-Man'".

"Don't talk to me about music. I've had brain-washing pop, and ultra-heavy-metal Drengin rock, that's the worst of both worlds. I just need some quiet time."

Quack thought about the Yor encounter again as Jaws sat down with him in the gazebo. He had come close to defeat, but the posse had pulled through in the end. They even had a secret weapon that could prove useful in the future. But at what cost, Quack pondered, at what cost?

"Where's Killa and Wombat, anyway?", Jaws asked.

Quack stopped his day-dreaming, and was about to answer when he heard some stifled laughter from above . They looked up just in time to see Killa drop from the gazebo's ceiling, glass of wine in hand.

"Check it out. No spillage." Killa said proudly.
"Mate, you shouldn't be taking risks like that."
"Aww, you care. I'm touched."
"Not you, the wine! That's expensive stuff, that is. You keep pulling stunts like that, next thing you know you'll have smashed a whole bottle of it."
"Maybe you're just looking for an excuse to break a leg. From what I hear, you and the good doctor Quinn have a bit of thing going." Jaws added.
"Nope, but she's available if you want me to put a good word in for you." Killa replied.
"Funny. Hurley and ajm back?"
"They're still scouting out the polar and desert regions."
"You mean the pubs."
"Well, they have to assess the extent of Budweiser contamination."
"What contamination? They don't sell Bud in any pubs there!"
"Well, we won't know that until they check all the pubs, will we?"
Some people got all the fun jobs.

"Say, Killa, this is a pretty nice spot here. Only thing missing is the ceiling pipes with booze taps.", Quack commented.
"We would have kept a keg here, but the ship said it clashed with the natural color scheme of the room.", the koala replied. Don't worry, we've got a good temporary solution. Cici! CICI!"

A shiny humanoid robot walked over.

"I do wish you wouldn't call me that, sir."
"Who's this?" asked the shark.
"Greetings! I am C6-T9, drink-mixer extraordin-"
"Great, fill up my beer!" Quack interrupted.
The droid took Quack's schooner and walked to the next room, muttering "Well, really! I can mix cocktails from over 570 cultures and they treat me like a bus-boy!"

When the droid left, Quack asked where it had come from.
"Oh, it was a gift from Obi-Wan. It's not that good, actually, but it was a nice gesture -"

They suddenly heard a crash from the next room. The animals looked at the doorway, and saw Wild Wombat come in, carrying a few beers.

"Bloody Cici. Doesn't even know how to pour a beer without head! I had to educate it with my boot."
"Cheers, wombie!"
As Wombat passed the beers around, he reported on the situation on Earth.

"There's been an incident. A Jim Bean warehouse has burned down to the ground. Millions of credits worth of bourbon - gone in an instant."
"Was it an accident?"
"Perhaps, but it's unlikely. The party-bots wouldn't have done it, they'd just drink the stuff instead."
"Well, there's only one alternative. It's the work of the conspiracy." Killa somberly declared.

The other animals nodded. They didn't know who the players in the Budweiser conspiracy were, but destroying bourbon stocks could only work to the conspiracy's advantage. They quickly worked out a plan of action, then split up to do what had to be done.

---

Quack was not in a good mood. The mere thought of Budweiser infiltrating his homeland sent shivers down his spine. This business on Earth was delaying his booze shipments and costing him profits. And to top it all off, someone had stolen the green muppet from his studio. "What sort of sick pervert would want one of them?" Quack muttered as he pulled out his data-pad and ordered a replacement...

Aliens as a food group comes from Threadzilla, were KFD and Torian sushi are staples. Not to mention those Arcean ribs. Yor are nearly inedible, and EBZ tends to dispose of the Altarians before they can be studied. I don't know what advances GROSS culinary scientists have made on Alexians and Caranoids. Probably not much since there are usually not enough around to play with.

Aren't the Carinoids the 1 meter tall race?

Spicy Carinoid Wings!!!

Don't forget the ranch dressing dipping sauce!! :d

I prefer the Yor Paste dipping sauce.

Nah, too much oil! Maybe some Texas Pete Hot Sauce? :d

The hunt starts

Jaws walked out muttering something about Budweiser conspiracy and his mind immediately turned to his favourite brew Little Creatures from Fremantle in WA… “Better than that weak excuse for beer Budweiser” he growled.. In fact he thought, the only thing better is the sight of a Torian Dreadnought lined up and ready for destruction.

He’d heard tales of their Avatars and Overlords, but nobody could clarify they actually existed and as for an Excalibur, pure fantasy..

Undocking the Pointer from the Pegasus, Jaws, his crew and his cameraman who was still recovering from a game of arm wrestling with Wombie ventured out in search of some clues to uncover the genius behind the conspiracy…. And if some Aliens should get in the way, well it ‘s happy time he thought..

“Ouch”.. “it always does that” as a new set of teeth rolled forward in his mouth cutting his lip.

“HALibut, what music shall we play for this adventure, think the guys got a bit fed up with the dum dum. dum dum. dum dum dum dum……”

“Its not surprising really is it” came the voice out of nowhere, “might I suggest dun de dun dun, dun dun dun, dun de dun, dun dun dun, der der, der der der”

“Good Idea, I like it, Jusht call me Jawsh the Wayfarer formerly known ash Redeemed lishenced to kill”

“dun de dun dun, dun dun dun, dun de dun, dun dun dun, der der, der der der”

“Oh what I have done?” droned HALibut “This will be a long voyage I think”

Jaws set the Autopilot on to section 4-12 where there was last reported a suspicious gas cloud… “Hope its not as bad as the last cloud that Cotal delivered, Jeez, that lasted for ages”

“Yes, well egg batter and day old oil isn’t your thing is it?” quipped HALibut.

“I’m going to rest me weary fins, wake me up should anything interesting happen before we get to where we are going”

“How do we know, when we get to where we are going” piped HALibut

“I set the autopilot you flathead”

“Don’t talk about my cousin in that tone of voice” said a disgruntled sounding HALibut

“Give me strength”.. “Just wake me”

“Very well, rest easy, I’ll just chat to the cameraman who keeps complaining his arm is broken”.. “Actually it is, but it’s much more fun telling him its not”

“HALibut who built this cruelty streak into your circuits”

“I don’t know what you mean”

The ships lights dimmed as Jaws went into a restless sleep

Hey South Seas mates,

If you didn't see the KFD post (Threadzilla #1885), I had you guys recruiting an old friend from your ANZAC days to be your barmaid.

Perhaps, Bakka with feel at home on the Keelhaul now...

Any Bakka sightings lately?

Cheers,

Meanwhile, on an intelligence ship carefully disguised as a tramp freighter, far, far away...

Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Moff Tarkin sat around a table, in communication with the Living Force. Their efforts were aided by the bottles scattered across the table's surface.

Since Coruscant and a few of its surrounding systems had abruptly popped into this strange new Metaverse, the Jedi had sought out their neighbors. Some, like the mysterious Fellowship of wizards, had been openly friendly, even speaking of alliances. Others, like the strange band of "Pirates of the Southern Seas" (whatever that meant) were boisterous and very, very loud, but equally friendly. Others, like the Drengin, were neither friendly nor did they speak of formal alliances. And their flavor of "loudness" came from the screech of aerial bombardment and the detonations of ship-to-ship combat.

From a few of these contacts, mostly from the G.R.O.S.S. pirate band, the Jedi had learned that the art of alcohol production on Coruscant was sadly lacking. Moreover, they had also discovered that strong alcohol that actually tasted good enough to stomach in larger quantities had an unforeseen effect. It allowed one to peer into the depths of the Force unhindered by normal concerns. Like consciousness, reason, and clarity of thought...

These strong and tasty alcoholic beverages were a valuable new tool in the Jedi Republic's ongoing battles against the forces of darkness. And any threat to them was a threat to the fabric of the Republic itself. The recent spike in Budweiser availability certainly qualified. Tarkin, head of Jedi Republic Security, was heading the investigation. Qui-Gon and his one-time pupil, Obi-Wan, were there to provide insights into the Force, combat backup, and diplomatic assistance. Tarkin had many strong points, but charming negotiation wasn't one of them.

So, to return to our intrepid heroes:

Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Tarkin sat around a table, in communication with the Living Force. Their efforts were aided by the bottles scattered across the table's surface. Qui-Gon, as usual, was more in touch with the Living Force than his companions. He had in fact completely passed out, so in tune was he with the Force within a bottle of Wild Turkey. Tarkin, his face already lined beyond his years, was practicing his squint. Obi-Wan was thinking of his next refill. Jack Daniels? Johnny Walker? Red? Black? Ah, the wonders of this Terran sphere...

Suddenly, Qui-Gon jerked awake, immediately standing up, straight as a rail. His eyes were wide, his long hair nearly standing on end. Tarkin spun around in surprise. Obi-Wan instinctively leapt to his feet and ignited his lightsaber, striking a classic defensive pose that unfortunately intercepted an overhead beam. So intent was he on his former Master that he failed to notice; the blue beam of light remained embedded in the beam, sizzling gently.

"I...have felt a GREAT disturbance in the Force," intoned Qui-Gon in sepulcheral tones. "As if millions of voices have cried out in terror!"

Obi-Wan smelled burning metal, but that was unimportant at the moment. "Qui-Gon, what is it?"

"I feel something terrible has happened. A mighty warehouse, stocked with Jim Beam, has burned to the ground. Millions of thirsty, painfully sober Midwesterners scream in agony at this moment."

Tarkin, with his gift for analysis, immediately weighed the statement. "We've expected something like this. It could have been far worse. It could have been Jack Daniels." He began to pace. "Obi-Wan! You have been traveling the great Web and setting up your eavesdropping and tracking systems, as Yoda and I have requested?"

Obi-Wan extinguished his saber. His nerves needed a boost; perhaps unconsciously after Tarkin's mention of the name, he reflexively snatched the bottle of JD from the table. "It's proceeding, Moff Tarkin. There are some three dozen systems in place."

"And the one aboard the Southern pirate ship? The one disguised as an erotica snooper?"

"Yes, it's installed. Why?"

Tarkin grinned his trademark death's-head grin; a truly frightening effect on a face that was, in fact, of a good alignment. He'd been practicing that look along with the squint. "It was with these pirates that you first discovered the threat to our alcohol supplies. And they will likely be as concerned as we are about its extent. Do you have their location?"

Obi-Wan shuffled his feet. "Umm...Moff Tarkin, they're not actually that bad, considering the fact that some of them are, well, evil. And they DO know how to throw a good party - I feel that I'm with friends. It doesn't seem right to follow them and let them draw out the conspirators and then -"

"STOP, Obi-Wan!" interrupted Qui-Gon. "You should have learned your lessons better from me. Describing a plan before it's concluded can only be done by those who are EVIL themselves. We may allow Sith into our ranks in this time of need, but YOU are not a Sith. Keep our plans in your own mind where they belong."

Obi-Wan had an angry retort ready, but then remembered that Qui-Gon had once again passed him in the rankings, and had the right to give orders. Instead, he turned to Tarkin. "Moff Tarkin, this is your investigation. How do you recommend we proceed?"

Tarkin smiled - he'd practiced that too. He leaned over to touch the comm panel. "Pilot - set a course for the Southern pirate ships. We will sense their presence in the Force when we are near. We can follow them while staying out of sensor range."

"Yes, Sir! But what course shall we set, Sir?"

Tarkin smiled again. "Master Obi-Wan has the comm frequency of a tracer signal. He'll be with you shortly."

Obi-Wan strided silently toward the bridge, running the encounter through his mind. He knew that what the others were saying was right, was in the interest of the Jedi Republic, and was in line with Yoda's orders. But personally, he didn't think this a kind return on hospitality.

Within his mind, he heard the words of his old master: "We may allow Sith into our ranks in this time of need, but YOU are not a Sith."

"No..." thought Obi-Wan. "Perhaps not."

"Not yet."

“What the…..”

“Have we intercepted anything HALibut”

“No we haven’t”

“then why have you woken me” mumbled an irritated Jaws

“Well I was bored, so I thought I would write you a song for your bunch of Pirates”

“OK, OK lets have”

To the tune of Waltzing Matilda and apologies to Banjo Patterson

Long time ago in an ice cave seeking shelter
Wombat found a ship
Hurls and Drop Bear found it too
And they saw Pontius, Kit and EBZ emerging
And then became the Pirates of the Southern Seas

Chorus
We are the Pirates, We are the Pirates
We are the Pirates of the Southern Seas
And we drink, and fall down and get up to watch wookie porn
We are the Pirates of the Southern Seas

The next in the posse was an evil thorny devil
And then a psychic duck
As purple as can be
Jaws then came along
Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum
And joined the Pirates of the Southern Seas

Chorus
We are the Pirates, We are the Pirates
We are the Pirates of the Southern Seas
And we rid the galaxy of slimy aliens
We are the Pirates of the Southern Seas

“Don’t give up your day job” said Jaws

"Wake me when you have something better to say"

It would be a great business, except the aliens are too busy running for their lives and the other empires think we are barbaric and bloodthirsty. Such an image is bad for legitimate business. But who says GROSS and friends play by the rules of others? ;)

War of the Worlds

They stood on the steps of the Palace de Chaillot, looking down at the Eiffel Tower. A number of Yor, as well as members of other races, were scattered through the human crowd. "Now what?" said Wild Wombat.

"Watch carefully." observed Hurley. "It all looks like random tourism, but the Yor are all definately moving in the same general direction." Indeed they were; the four followed the slow but definite migration of Yor along the Avenue Rapp, across the Pont de L'Alma, up the Avenue Marceau and through the Rue de Bassano to the Champs Elysses. There, they appeared to enter a Planet Hollywood restaurant on the Champs.

"Hmm...Yor go in, but no Yor come out," said Killa. Just then, a limousine bearing the flag of the European Alliance Emperor pulled up outside the Planet Hollywood. The Emperor himself, Impune Lacessit, emerged from the Planet Hollywood and climbed into the waiting limo, which then sped down to the Grand Palace, the new home of the Alliance. Killa looked at his comrades.

"Wombat, you and Hurley investigate that restaurant - it must have something to do with shipping that Budweiser. ajm and I will track the European Alliance Emperor - I think we need to ask him some questions!"

A short time later, Killa Koala wheeled an impressive leather high-backed chair into the reception area of the Grand Palace. The scene was astonishing; impromptu committee meetings occurring at random, minutes taken and distributed, by-laws enacted at bewildering speed. "Are we going to be able to pull this off?" whispered the chair.

"Trust me." said Killa. He approached the reception desk. "Bon jour - I have a new chair for delivery to Emperor Impune's private offices." The receptionist looked over her glasses at him with scepticism. "I trust you have the relevant triplicate form, signed by three Euro Alliance member nations, authorising the procurement of such a thing. And please, we refer to it as a 'Device, Singular, for the accommodation of person, Individual, one only, seated' - try to be specific."

"You mean THIS triplicate form?" Killa brought a form from behind him with a flourish. He looked seductively at the receptionist. "Why, the second form of this triplicate set...it matches the colour of your eyes..."

Perhaps only ajm could appreciate how truly heroic Killa's efforts were that day. Triplicate, quadruplicate, even the fiendish quintuple forms needed to move objects from the fourth floor to the fifth floor all fell before him. Finally, they reached the last barrier - the Emperor's personal secretary. "Er...I must c-check the P-Policy a-and P-Procedure M-Manual" she stammered. "My dear...your grace and beauty warrant a Policy and Procedure just for you!" Killa countered. Thus, they finally gained access to the Emporer's inner sanctum.

Emperor Impune Lacessit returned to his office to find a handsome new high-backed leather chair and a delivery invoice with the requisite ten copies for distribution to all departments. He decided to try out his new possession; he failed to notice the small intricate iridium tattoo one one arm of the chair. Suddenly, the chair came alive, the arms folding outwards and pinning the Emperor in place. Killa Koala stepped from behind the drapes. "Don't bother yelling for help, Emperor. We made sure all your staff received Form 2343FR/B/45: Authorisation For Extended Lunch Break. There is no one to hear you. You will now answer our questions - about the Yor, about Planet Hollywood - and about the Budweiser!"

The Emperor struggled for a few moments, and realising the futility of his actions, relaxed and glared at Killa Koala. "Fools!" spat Impune. "You do not realise what you meddle with! How could you vagabond pirates with your lax morals and your excessive drinking, know the joy of...of being on a Standing Committee! Or a Review Tribunal! How could you appreciate the delicacy of enacting legislation, constitutional reform...or the other wonders of the Alliance? You ingrates know NOTHING of these things! With the help of our Yor friends, we will spread our jurisprudence throughout the Metaverse! Yes - it was our additive to the Budweiser that made it so easy. We had already perfected the substance - how do you think we got the stupid English to agree to accept the Euro as a common currency? Once their cows went mad, they had to import French beef...it was so easy to add our 'special flavouring' to it. The Yor felt that American culture was spreading throughout the Metaverse - so simple to add our substance to the Budweiser and make the Yor's job - and ours - much easier."

"You utter fiend," muttered Killa. "Fortunately, there are those free thinking independents in the Metaverse who will not settle for anything less than REALLY GOOD BEER. And there are some...[and Killa's chest puffed out at this]....who prefer WINE! Your plan will never succeed!" Killa moved quickly to the Emperor's in-tray, picking it up and knocking Impune unconscious with it. ajm shapeshifted back into human form, leaving the Emperor sprawled on the floor. "We need to get outa here, Killa - and warn the others!" They carefully backtracked, voiding invoices and deleting memos, until they made it back to the street, where they set off in search of the others.

Meanwhile, Wombat and Hurley had gone into the Planet Hollywood, just in time to see a group of Yor disappear down a flight of stairs at the back of the restaurant. "Hurls...I need a distraction." The penguin grinned and sauntered across to the bar. Pairs of French eyes followed the suave, debonair penguin as he then began to speak glowingly of new innovations in information technology, and how these could be used to preserve and disseminate French culture. The audience listened, entraced, and Wombat used the opportunity to sneak down the back stairs.

He quietly went down the stairs and rounded a corner - and found himself in a giant underground warehouse. Barrels of a strange, purplish liquid were being produced in one area, and these were then passed over to a second area where the substance was injected into - bottles of Budweiser! Wombat thought for a moment, then stepped forward, tapped his paw in time and started to sing:

Satisfaction came in a chain reaction
I couldn't get enough, so I had to self-destruct
The heat was on, rising to the top
Everybody is going strong, and that is when my spark got hot
I heard somebody say...

Glittering silver balls descended from the ceiling, and the room was suddenly illuminated by psychadelic lights...a pounding beat manifested throughout the vast space...and some of the Yor started to get down...and boogie. Until, that is, laser beams started spearing out from the glittering balls, across the warehouse floor. One caught a Yor mid-moonwalk, another hit a vat of beer and set it alight...then panic set in. Laser beams fired at will, catching bewildered Yor, vapourising the stores of purple liquid and destroying the Budweiser supplies, setting fire to the production machinery. Wombat raced back up the stairs as the smell of smoke began to filter through the restaurant.

Hurley met him at the door. "Mission accomplished, Wombat?"

"Yes, Hurley...it's a Disco Inferno...."

They met the others back at the Eiffel Tower and teleported up to the Pegasus. After some modest drinking and sharing of notes, Killa addressed the group. "We now know that at least one nation-state of Earth is in league with alien forces. It's time to gather our own forces - we need a council of war!"

Thanks for the welcome...

Soon you'll have a new drop bear cadet...
I will become a black bear as they are indigent to the Adirondack region of New York state (about 3 hours from where I live), but my favorite place to go with college buddies and consume large quantities of bear and whiskey for a weekend.

"Ahh.. Aliens ahead" thought Jaws as he awoke from his hypersleep chamber. He always wondered how a composer who was as deaf as a brick could produce such a dramatic piece of work. Getting up and making his way to the bridge and settling into specially designed aqua chair, Jaws said.

"What do we have HALibut"

"Not much really your toothfullness"... "just a caranoid colony ship ahead, I always wonder why they build so many ships and never colonise anything out of their own sector".. "must have a brain the size Master Yoda's genitalia"

"Well it's not the size it's the force that matters HALibut"

"Are they trading with us?" asked Jaws

"Why yes they buy copius amounts of Mr. Quack's morning after elixer"... "in fact they buy all of it"

"those guys must party hard" mused Jaws, "open hailing frequencies, lets see what these dudes are up to"

"HALibut?"

"Yes"

"Is it ok for a shark to say dudes?"

"I think so sir, don't worry about it"

"Oh OK, er thanks I think"

The screen shows blank, as is normal and a voice is heard

"Warm greeting human what can we do for you today..... but er um can you speak softly, I've run out of the morning after elixir and the freighter doesn't arrive until tomorrow"

"Well it just so happens, I have a kilotnne I could transfer to you if you would like to trade"

"A kilotonne would be very useful" said the Caranoid leader, "I have just researched Tri Titanium Obsidian".. "Its as black as night, absorbs all light and makes you virtually invisible without the need for a cloaking device, as well as being extremely light and tougher than a drengins attitude".. "You can also just apply it to the out side of your ship without any adverse affects"

"How long will it take to do that, probably a few solar days" .. "Why not come aboard and enjoy yourself while we fix it up"

"I'll be right over"

A few days later as Jaws was preparing to board his now black as death ship. He said to the Caranoid "It looks beautiful", "also I can see why you need that elixir, what do you make that stuff out of?", "can I take some back to the guys at the pegasus?", "Quack will think its his birthday when he tries this", and the thought of the koala trying to remain co-ordinated enough to climb to his sleeping place made his gills ache with laughter.

When he got back on board HALibut said "Oh you're back".. "you know when I woke you up all that time ago and you then go and leave me all alone with nothing but that insane cameraman for company"

"What's he done now"

"Never mind I don't want to talk about it"... "Oh yes yes.. you need to get back to the Pegasus for a council of war"

"Guess the boys have uncovered something" said Jaws "OK.. lets Hyperwarp it out of here"... "and lets have something really groovy, for the journey HALibut".. "I've got to tell you what those Caranoides get up to"

ding ding ding ding
ding ding ding ding
ding ding ding ding dinggggg
Aiiiiiiiiiieyyyya

And to the tune of Sharika the Pointer almost invisibley sped back to the Pegasus

Fury of the Swarm

The ventilation duct was a tight fit, even for a duck. But Quack kept pushing through - the rumours had to be investigated, no matter the cost. All across the metaverse, pirates were reporting incidents of strange wife behaviour on Threadzilla. So far, none of the southern seas pirates had reported this, but saying you're whipped is never an easy thing to do. The duct which led to the wives' lounge room was just ahead, and Quack could find out what was going on...

"I think Shazza and Dazza are gonna get back together for sure!"
"She's too good for him, she is."
"What else is new? Am I right, ladies?"

The wives tittered as they swapped various stories about male stupidity. Some were knitting, others were reading news-links, and a few were sipping on the usual girlie cocktails. Nothing unusual so far.

"Are the boys back yet?"
"Oh, they're still doing their pirate thing."
"Well, they'd better bring back something tasteful this time or they'll be grounded for a month. We're pirate wives, for God's sake! We expect to be showered with gifts!"
"Look at this tacky dress my hubbie tried to palm off on me! It's not even my size!"

The woman reading the news-link scrolled through to the society pages, and put the photos on the big screen. All the women immediately turned to watch.

"Oh, those shoes are to die for!"
"And that hair-do just screams class!"

They kept scrolling through the photos - and suddenly froze. There, on the screen, was a photo of a familiar wombat taking charge of a disco floor. In the background, a suave penguin in a tuxedo was chatting up some local birds.

All the wives were silent.
Mrs Wombat asked, "Where was that photo taken?"
The wife with the news-link answered, "Planet Hollywood... Paris."

Paris. The city of lights.
Paris. The city of l'amour.

"Paris." the wives quietly echoed amongst themselves. Then, it got louder. "Paris! PARIS! They say they're working hard, and they're going out on the town in PARIS! WITHOUT US?!? Oh, they'll pay, we'll make them pay... come on, girls! We're going to Paris!"

Quack gulped.

---

Jaws casually strolled onto the Pegasus' bridge.

"dummmmm dum, dummmmm dum, dum dum dum dum - "

Then he stopped, as he looked around and saw that everyone was in a panic.

"It's no good, Quack! There's a Trekkie-anomaly passing through the system! All comms to the planet are down!" said one of the crewmen.

"How long until it passes?" the duck demanded.

"Forty-five minutes. Well, maybe an hour and a half if it's a double episode, but that doesn't usually happen this time of year."

"That's still too long."

Quack saw Jaws on the bridge.

"Good, you're here. We've got a crisis situation. Two, actually. Grab your tuxedo. We're going to Paris!"

---

As Emperor Impune Lacessit woke up, his aide asked "Are you all-right, sir?"

What had happened? There was a chair... and a koala! That bloody koala! He'd have his revenge.

"Call a council of war! We're going to Paris!"
"Um, sir, we're already in Paris."
"Excellent." said the Emperor before he passed out again.

Rendez-vous

Quack and Jaws got out of the drop-ship.

The duck was saying "So that's the situation. The wives are out on the prowl, looking for blood, and the European Empire is still causing trouble. I'll track down the wives, you see what you can do to sabotage the Euros."

"For king and country!" Jaws said in his best Sean Connery accent.

---

"I'm looking for a neck-clasp, something really tasteful. Price is no object."

The store assistant smiled at the duck.

"Oh, monsieur, I am very happy to hear that! Do you want something that goes well with that dress and all the other jewelry pieces you picked out?"

"Oh, no, no, this clasp's for a wombat."

The salesman raised an eyebrow.

The duck demanded, "Look, I don't have time to mess around. I know you frenchies like that kinky animal shit. Do you have what I'm looking for, or will I have to go to some of those leather stores on the seedy side of Paris?"

"Just a moment, monsieur. This way, if you please."

The salesman led the duck behind a curtain, and pulled a candlestick to reveal a secret passage. Inside was the most complete collection of animal fashion jewelry Quack had ever seen. In one runway cage, a snake with more gold chains than a gangster was slithering up and down. In another, a cat was quietly rubbing the side of its cage, showing off its ear-rings. Animal mannequins were all around, sporting a wide variety of dresses and jewelry.

"Yes, this will do nicely." the duck muttered.
"Does anything catch your eye?"
"It's so hard to choose... I think I'll just take it all." Quack said as he drew his cutlass.

As the salesman sit quivering in the corner, Quack went around, choosing the best human and animal clothes and jewellry he could find, and dumping them in his sack. As an afterthought, he grabbed some paperwork from the sales desk, then grinned and flew off as fast as his wings could take him.

The salesman immediately went to the phone.

"Allo, police? I have been robbed!"
There was some talking other end of the line.
"No, I don't have the XJF-76 police report form, the duck stole it!"
There was the sound of laughter, then the line went dead.
"Allo? Allo? Merde."

---

Jaws strolled up to the bar next to the Euro Parliament.

"Just a beer, thanks." he said. "Shaken, not stirred.", he quickly added out of habit.

As he sipped on what was left of his beer, Jaws looked around. Most of the Euro politicians were here, so this was the perfect place to cause some mischief. He had to keep things quiet for now, since he was playing a secret agent. He sighed. Just once, he wanted to be the center of attention...

He suddenly had a wicked idea. He'd seen some barrels of the Euro's drug in the basement.

Jaws walked down to the basement. A few minutes later, he returned and said "Have some wine, everyone! The drinks are on me!"

The Euros cheered as the wine was passed around. The drug Jaws had added worked quickly, and soon, the Euros had become as stupid as, well, Euros.

Jaws climbed up onto the bar.

"Attention! Can I have your attention, please? This session of the European Parliament is now in session."

The Euro politicians immediately sat on the floor and crossed their legs like school children.

Jaws smiled. The drug was working well.

"Okay, first order of business, the election of me, Jaws the Wayfarer, as your new emperor - "

"What? Without a notice of intent?" one politician said.

"I say, that's just not cricket." another added.

The Euros started to argue. Even with the drug, the Euros clung to their procedures. Their training had been too thorough.

Jaws sighed, bit off the head of the Speaker of the House, and jumped out the window. Not as nice as being elected Emperor, he mused, but at least choosing a new Speaker would keep them busy for a while...

---

"And then, we found out she was the same flower-girl from before!"
The koala, wombat, penguin, and lizard laughed as they swapped some drunken stories. Their pub crawl in Paris was going along quite nicely.

One of them suddenly pointed in the air, at a bird that was carrying a sack.

"Is that a stork? I can't tell, it's pretty far away." said the koala.
"Oh, please, not again... isn't nine enough?" said the wombat to no-one in particular.

The bird dropped the sack, and it appeared to be headed right at the wombat.

"That'd be right." muttered the wombat as the sack bowled him over. When the sack landed, it spilled its contents all across the footpath. The animals started pawing through the jewelry.

"That was unexpected." one of them said.

They suddenly heard a female scream approaching.

"Oh, God, no, not now..."

The wives rounded the corner.

"WELL! WE'VE FINALLY FOUND YOU? HAVE A GOOD TIME IN PARIS, DID YOU? I'LL BET -"

The wives stopped as they saw all the jewelry and dresses spilled out in front of the animals. Their frowns slowly turned upside down.

"Oh, my God! They're beautiful! Look at that dress! And that tiara!"

The wives swarmed on the pile, alternating between kissing their husbands and choosing what to take.

Mrs. Wombat noticed the wombat-sized neck-clasp in the pile, and went over to her husband. "That must've been awfully hard to find, honey." she purred as she nibbled on his ear.

Wombat blushed.
