Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

A Call To Arms

Quack checked the corridor one last time. All clear. He hit the override, and entered Killa's quarters. Hopefully, no-one would notice his absence from the Galactic Peace Ball, and he only needed a second here. He flew up to the ceiling, grabbed the bug he'd planted, and raced back to his quarters. There, he plugged the bug into his computer and downloaded a video. He played the video, and began to smile...

***

Killa is sitting at a desk, bashing it in frustration. "I AM NOT A SNOBBY GEEK! I'M A VICIOUS PIRATE!", he screams. He sees a book sitting on the corner of his desk. He picks up "10001 Trivia Facts for the Terminally Geeky", roars, and viciously stabs the book with his claws. He bites it, and begins to tear it apart, page by page...

***

Quack froze the video and zoomed in. There, on the original cover, under the title, was written:

"By Fleet Captain Killa Koala, OAM, BA, MA, PhD"

Everything began to make sense. The duck started work on his plan for revenge, when a new e-mail appeared on his computer.

Quack looked at the e-mail, and his heart began to pound.

---

As Pontius strutted past in all his regal glory, Killa Koala was chatting to the local wildlife.

"Oh, I'm not denying that he worked hard on the costume. But I wanted to see some attention to detail!
For example, his costume is supposed to be that of an 18th century French nobleman. But his cuff-links carry the crest of a contemporary German lineage! And his boots are clearly 17th century. That flair at the toe speaks volumes. 1673, if I'm not mistaken. It was a very good year for boots."

Koala scoffed.

"I mean, honestly - who does he think we are? Mere simpletons?"

The Dr. Koala personality was in full swing here, but all the celebrity hangers-on at the ball seemed to be loving it, and they tittered in appreciation.

"I don't know. Do you think I'm a simpleton?" quacked a voice in the crowd.

Killa took a step back as he recognized the duck with blood-shot eyes.

"Oh, um, hi, it's good to see you, really it is - "

The duck reached in his pocket. Killa's eyes bulged with fear.

"There'll be other cygnets! I mean, come on! Look at you, you've got a great, um... well, a lot of cygnets aren't that picky! Just try going for one that needs glasses!"

Quack threw a nametag at Killa. Confused, he turned it over, and saw an ancient symbol, along with the name "Christopher Packer".

"Chris... I haven't heard that name for a very long time... I haven't worn this badge for a very long time either. Does this mean what I think it means?"

The duck nodded.

"We've been re-activated."

---

Within the enlisted ranks of the pirates, the party was carrying on at full swing.

"And then i said louie, louie i said, what the, i mean, in what the world - "
"Shut up, you drunken skunk. You're smashed."
"Like hell im slashed!"
"Well, you haven't drunk any of that hard stuff for a while. You're just sitting on the edge of your limit, and you know it."
"I'll show yoo on the edge, matey!"

The pirate grabbed the bottle of hard stuff and began to drink. Not a sip, not even a gulp, but a full-bodied scull. He put down the bottle, wiped his mouth, and realized he'd have to throw up in the next thirty seconds.

Two men in dark suits with dark glasses were watching. They nodded to each other, and stepped forward.

"We can't have that here." one said.
"It's not allowed." the other added helpfully.

The pirate ignored them, and was running around the room, looking for something to throw up in. One of the agents grabbed his shoulder, and the other handed him a brown paper bag. The pirate eagerly grabbed it, and opened his mouth, but the agent cut him off.

"You don't understand."
"This must be hidden from those who are watching."

Now the pirate was confused. Why did they give him the bag?

One of the agents suddenly tied the pirate's arms behind his back, while the other put the bag over the pirate's head, tied it around his neck, and kicked him in the guts. As the pirate rolled on the floor, doing disgusting things inside the privacy of his paper bag, the other pirates tried to look away and ignore what was going on.

"That's gross!" one of the pirates finally called out.

The agents nodded. "Yes. Yes, we are." one of them said as they departed.

In the background, a duck and a koala nodded and moved off as well. The work of the fan-club was never complete, and, judging by the way the party had gone so far, they would have a lot of work tonight.

Echoes of Cold Chisel

Having an open barbeque without written permission was against ship's regulations, but tonight, on the night of the Galactic Peace Ball, no-one was going to complain. So the ANZACs set up a barbecue, and pretty soon, the Australian Republic set one up next to them. What these people lacked in numbers, they made up for in volume. Since they were set-up next to the undead and the Euros, they didn't have much competition in volume either, and the best music Australia had ever produced could be heard all through the deck.

A group of animals and Jedi knights were leaving the barbeque, each with a juicy steak sandwich.

"Ah, I missed that good old cooking." Jaws said.
"We still have barbeques on board sometimes, you know." replied the wombat.
"I haven't had anything this good in ages!" exclaimed Obi-Wan. "Yoda makes me stick to the greens. He says I'm getting too tubby for my age. Bloody muppet, one of these days I'm gonna -"
Obi-Wan took a deep breath.
"calm and collected, calm and collected..." he muttered to himself.
"Looks like you're not the only one who likes this food."

The animals noticed quite a few people passing by, checking out what Australian culture had to offer.
Hurley pointed out a girl in the distance with a flower through her hair.

"Look at that one. She's looking this way all the time, and the guy with her keeps dragging her away, but every time he's distracted, she looks back here again."
"The Force is strong with her." commented Obi-Wan.
"Is that how you Judys say she's got a cute butt?" said a pirate (who won't be named here for fear of legal action).
"I sense a dark presence..."
"Well, that's a pretty stupid compliment."
"No, really!" Obi-Wan insisted. "There's some form of mind-control at work... and he's responsible!" Obi-Wan pointed out the man next to her.

"Who is he?"
"I don't know, he's too far away."

The man turned around, and his gold medal was plain to see. Wombat clenched his fist in anger.

"Oh, that's just great. Mister 'maso is the only way to play', mister VETERAN, strutting around like he owns the place. And he still has to pull cheap tricks like mind-control his date? That is bullshit, man! He's going down! He says he's masochistic? Let's find out how much he enjoys pain!"

Wombat started to stomp off, but Hurley grabbed his arm.

"Dude, it's the Galactic Peace Ball. You can't just stomp over there and knock his block off! But there are always alternatives..."

---

"SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AND YOU'RE TO BLAME,
YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME,
I PLAY MY PART AND YOU PLAY YOUR GAME,
YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME!"

Theoden grimaced as he walked past that corner of the party. Those GROSS pirates and their goddamn karaoke - probably Kit again, making an idiot of himself. Sounded like a duet, though. Well, he thought, he might as well see who was acting like a dumbass this time. It'd make a good story for the next Fellowship News. Theoden headed towards the corner, and what he say took his breath away.

There was Kit, drunk as usual - though not as drunk as the last time he'd visited the Fellowship. And next to him was Ray, Ray the Wanderer, Ray the Veteran, drinking swill and behaving like a common pirate. Theoden stepped forward, grabbed the bottle Ray was sculling from, and read the label:

"Kit's Private Reserve - 2198"

Underneath the label, etched into the bottle, the words "WARP PLASMA - DO NOT DRINK" could still be seen.

"That's the stuff I had during my little rampage. As I'm sure you remember, it's got quite a kick. Ray seems to be enjoying it." Kit pointed out Ray, who by now was tripping over himself, and grinning wildly at the crowd of assembled party guests.

"You - you can't do this! This is an outrageous insult! I swear, this means war!" Theoden spluttered.

"I don't think so." replied a new voice.

Wild Wombat stepped forward.

"I took the liberty of bringing this recording, which we obtained very recently from the Fellowship." Wombat pressed a button on his pad, and a hologram of Ray appeared.

"I'll probably be too drunk to draw up papers tonight, Blue." said the hologram Ray.

"Heey, that's me! I'm on tee-vee! SUPER-STAR!" slurred the drunken Ray.

The wombat continued to explain the situation.

"By GROSS corporate law, we took that as a verbal contract requesting a large quantity of alcohol, and we were happy to provide. We even set up a credit line for him. He's run up quite a hefty tab tonight, but he let me keep this as collateral."

Wombat lightly ran his fingers over the shiny gold medal pinned to his chest. Theoden looked at his leader - Ray had a bronze medal pinned to his chest instead of his usual gold, but he was in no state to notice.

"Is it done yet?" Hurley quietly asked Obi-Wan.
"Only one way to find out." Obi-Wan walked over to the flower-girl.

"How do you do? How DO you do? How do YOU do?" said the flower-girl with a vacant stare.

Obi-Wan gingerly back-pedaled towards the penguin.
"Not yet." he whispered.

"Hey, Ray, check out this cocktail!" yelled out Kit. He mixed up a quick number, and passed it to Ray. Ray drank it, yelled out "I FEEL MY MOJO!", and passed out.

The flower-girl blinked.

"Well, how extra-ordinary! Such a spectacle, it's really quiet... what's the word? Supercalifragi... no..."

She shook her head vigourously, and her accent began to change.

"Omigawd! That's it! AWESOME! That's a helluva shot, it's fully sick! He'll avagood night, he will!"

She started sniffing the air.

"All right! Bluey's got a barbie going! I could use some good tucker!"

Her harsh accent brought Ray back to consciousness, but he could nothing but watch as she walked out of his life. The animals cackled, and ran off, their mission complete. Theoden swore and was about to chase after them, but Ray grabbed his arm.

"Ah, forgit abart it. I'm a superstar, I am! I rule the best empire around, and I've got the gold medal!", he said as he lovingly polished his bronze medal. "I'm tip-top, mate - irresistable! I'll be able to pick up some real ladies here in no time! They love my smell of success!"

Theoden quietly pointed out that his "gold medal", was, in fact, not gold. Ray began to sober up at this news.

Some-one tapped him on the shoulder.

"What?" Ray said coldly.

H50 stepped into view.

"Have you got that 20K on you, or should I add it to your drinking bill?"

Ray was not amused. He could feel the hangover creeping up on him already.

---

Gerakken watched the flower-girl's return to the ANZACs, and he was not pleased. Those animals had been meddling in issues they could not comprehend. This required swift action, and he was the only one qualified to deal with it.

A War Of Words

"You've still got a queen? AUSTRALIA SUCKS! Bloody lamers!"

BlueSteel looked up from his barbeque, tongs in hand. Was someone mouthing off about his glorious Australia? He shook his head - he must be hearing things.

"Burn the Australian constitution!"

Now he was pissed off. Who was saying those things? A cute little boy tugged BlueSteel's cooking apron.

"I think those people are saying bad things about you. They said you and some queen are doing something funny in the hay." the boy said.

"Who's saying these things?" asked BlueSteel.

The boy pointed to the Australian Republic stall.

"Thanks, kid." said BlueSteel, and he headed towards the other stall, with a gas tank in one hand and a lit match in the other.

---

"GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!!!"

Rainbird looked up with disgust. The only person in the direction that cry came from was BlueSteel. BlueSteel seemed to be looking behind him, but Rainbird wasn't going to fall for that old trick. The gas tank and match gave away his intentions. She picked up a frying pan, determined to "re-educate" BlueSteel on the benefits of an elected head of state.

---

As the boy walked off, whistling, a duck sidled up next to him.

"Nice disguise there. I didn't think it would work."
"You faith is lacking. That is why you fail."
"My apologies for doubting you, Spymaster."
"You might be a psychic duck, but you still don't realize the power that simple words can have. Why do you think I approved this stupid ball in the first place? It is too difficult to invade the other empires - no empire has the logistics in place to pull that off. But here, at this "peace ball", we can destroy empires with a misheard word here, a derogatory remark there... there's no limit to what we can accomplish!"

Quack was lost for words - he hadn't realized how much though Gerakken had put into the plans for this night. Gerakken smiled.

"The listening bugs have given us lots of ammunition to use, but we don't need to stick to the facts. Truth is irrelevant - only faith matters. If they believe it, it will become true. Allow me to demonstrate."

Gerakken grabbed a drawing of a complicated family tree, and stepped up to the podium.

Altarian Pie

"Wake up, you useless piece of alkag!"

One of the sectoids smacked the other one on the head. The second one just swore in his native language and rolled over.

"Look what's going on." the first one insisted.

The second one blearily raised his head, and looked around. All the pirates were looking uneasily at each other, and at a human woman who was leaving the ballroom.

The first sectoid pointed out the woman. "They say she's been breeding an awful lot. And doing her own experiments."

The second one clicked enquiringly.

"Yes. I hear she's even got her own set of leathers. And the medical instruments, obviously."

If the other sectoid had an eyebrow, it would have raised it suggestively. Instead, it made the vein above its eyes bulge with a flourescent greenish tint, and purred with interest.

---

Dr Quinn sat quietly in her office, smoking a cigarette. She was not ashamed of her past - indeed, her little black book of conquests meant more to her than any of the medical awards she's received. And hearing those stories about her wild days of pleasure cruises with sun-tanned space pirates excited her in a way she had not felt in years. Who would be my next big conquest, she silently mused...

There was a knock on the door.

"Come in!" said the doctor, as she silently prayed for a Brad Pitt lookalike, here for his first physical.

Two Sectoids walked in. The doctor was immediately disappointed, for she felt that size mattered a lot.

"Do you have anything to drink?" one asked.
"I believe the kegs are upstairs." she replied coldly.
"No, no, that's what the cretins drink. I mean alcohol, liquor -- good stuff."

She took another puff of her cigarette, and re-considered her options. Sighing, she gestured towards a bottle in the corner. The second Sectoid grabbed it, and poured glasses for all three of them.

"So...would you object if I said you're quite striking?" the first alien continued.

The doctor raised an eyebrow.
"Mister Sectoid -- are you trying to seduce me?"
"Yes ma'am, I am." was the glib reply.

Such impudence, and from such a small creature! This was starting to get Dr Quinn excited.

---

The pirates were gathered around a large screen, with electronic whiteboard markers.

"No, no, no, that's all wrong! How can CypherPax be EBZ's uncle's third cousin by marriage if Bakka is Gerakken's grand-nephew?"
"There's no such thing as a grand-nephew, you dolt!"

They were trying to draw family trees based on what they remembered from Gerakken's speech, but without much luck.

The screen suddenly went blank, along with all the other screens in the ballroom. The music also immediately died.

"Not another power outage!" someone yelled.
"Did anybody save the file?" another pirate cried.
"Relax, the screens are coming back on."

The main screen powered up again, and began showing footage of two Sectoids crawling over a familiar doctor, with a bizarre collection of medical instuments in their hands.

"Take me to your leader!" demanded one of the Sectoids.
"ALL ABOARD!!!" screamed the passionate doctor as she tightened the leather collars around the Sectoids' necks.

"Mom?" called out one of the pirates uneasily.
"I think I'm gonna be sick." another muttered.

A man in a dark suit with dark glasses heard this remark, and quietly wandered over to deal with the situation.

Quack! Quack! Quack!

Shouldn't have been reading this at work... was supposed to be preparing for a code review. Developer came over to make sure I wasn't laughing at his work.
(I have been know to do that on occassion.)

I can't wait to see what comes next for / from the POSSE, like JAWS I'm just in awe. Clearly not worthy of having the Quack and Killa for siblings...

This is the place to get in touch with the most productive group of writers for humor and I don't think anyone would dare argue with that. That being said, the online comic strip needs volunteer writers. I wish I could help keep things going with Metajinx http://members.aol.com/andyt54321/index.html , but I simply don’t have the time. Please consider e-mailing me [email protected] and I’ll hook you up with the artist. Besides, you don’t want to read my style of comedy in every issue, do you? ;) From experience I can tell you it’s a nifty little challenge to condense our stories into short dialogues while allowing the superb artwork to mix in. The result is a very rewarding product for all GalCiv fans to enjoy. :D Volunteer now! Save our sanity!

We’re also looking for artists! Whether you’re interested in providing sketches, background images, or fully developed strips, just e-mail me [email protected] !
