Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

you deserve credit for having the courage to return

I don't think EBZ is any less courageous for leaving. Nor would Wombat be if he decided to leave. That would be a very moronic statement considering EBZ is in the military as we speak.

Pontius, If you didn't take everything said wrong, it wouldn't be an issue. I made a heartfelt and sincere comment to Wombat, not intending on making a statement on anybody's courage. I most certainly appreciate EBZ and I know he's just as courageous as any of the rest of us who have served our country. (Former US Navy here)

I can only "vanilla-ize" my comments up to a point. Pretty soon, all I will be able to say without offending you will be "Hi"... :notsure:

Bakka is sending us coded messages. I've finally deciphered them.. something about being in the darkness of a ring wraith prison. Shall we go free him?

Ashlyn shouldn't have all the fun, we should take the Wombat crew on our mission. No one in the fellowship would suspect a tour group of Australian fauna.

Thoughts?

Oh, welcome back Wombat! I'm glad you're still playing ... I see you managed to get two great normal games in today... that's pretty impressive speed by itself.

A small map tends to take me 3-5 hours... and I never manage to break 10K on them.

Actually it's coming out of your account now. Your Lawyer really likes to drink and pad his expenses. Great guy....

But I guess we're gonna come rescue you nonetheless.

Bakka! We're comin, boy - we never leave a man behind!! I hope you lot took good care of my nippers while I was away; they're needed here.

Pontius vs. Theoden - now look, I just get through spreadin' the luuuve, and my Captain and my favourite Ringworm are at it again! ALL RIGHT, you two, just leave it! It's the American in both of you...here, a Fosters for each of you. Pontius especially - you have a fever, beer is good for you (dont tell your doctor I said that)...

Cypher - thanks mate! Ask Ashlyn if she wants to go on a trip with her Uncle Wild.... ;)
Pontius and Theoden, please don't argue. My nerves can't take any more. It's been a stressful time all 'round. :notsure:

Pontius: I note you completed a small game recently, and got 14,000 for it!

Wombie: 2 games at a higher dificulty, and for a better score!

I'll tell Kimberly. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

I'm more of a wine kind of guy anyway. I like beer, Good beer, But I like a good wine even more. Growing up within 30 minutes of the premier wine producing region in the world, Napa/Sonoma/Mendocino counties, will do that to you.
Pontius - if you're looking after a sick kid, you are the one who is likely to need the beer :D And accept NO substitutes or imports!

Don't tell Killa this, it'll spoil my image, but I am more likely to have a red with dinner than a beer these days...

Congrats on the bombs, O Captain, my Captain - I'm not likely to hold this silvery thingy for long, then... :p

And as I recall, Alcohol constricts the blood vessels resulting in less blood flow close to the skin and extremedies exacerbating both hypo and hyperthermia problems if I am not mistaken. Not to mention it inhibits water reabsorption in the kidneys exacerbating dehydration problems associated with a fever... But Nice thought. I'll raise my glass of 2003 white (tap water that is) in toast.
Are you going to trade physiology barbs with me, bub? Alcohol DILATES peripheral circulation; that's why you get a red nose and cheeks when you're had a few. Thus, MORE blood flow close to the skin means poorer thermoregulation and excessive heat loss; hence your thermic problems. Your renal physiology is OK ;p

MMM 2003 a good year for tap water.

I like all wine. Whites, Reds, blushes. Depends on what you're eating...

Good to see you back Wombie! :D

This glass of Estancia Pinot Noir is dedicated to you. It's a 2001 from Monterey (that's in California). Mmmm... :d berry-good. Reminds me of my days in Monterey. Lots of $#%, booze, and... well the $#% and booze was enough. ;)
Don't worry, guys. We're not in the Anzac empire any more, so you're allowed to mention things like wine. Just don't overdo it :)

Ok I had it backwards. Dilates peripheral. What do you expect out of a 104 fever, a complete recitation (or is it recessitation) of Grays anatomy?.....But just wait till we trade economic barbs.... Then I shall have you upon the hip and extract my pound of flesh...... mwahahahahahahahhahahahahahah LOL

Now this is wierd. I never tried it before. I'm playing a Maso. Just to check how tight the computer is on giving money away, I offered it 100 of my megabux immediately for 10 of its megabux immediately and it said no.!!!!

Boy, I guess it's 10 bux was tied up in its one, its only its precious. hehe..

Anyway I best put this keyboard off me bed and lie my head back down and close my eyes before the ceiling starts spinning again. See ya tomorrow. Or tonight as the case may be for whomever.

ROAD TRIP III: THE SEARCH FOR WOMBAT

"USS Retox, Captain's personal log... With most of our flame-war damage repaired, we are almost home. Yet, I feel -- uneasy. And I wonder why. Perhaps it is the erratic behavior of Dr Killa... Or the emptiness of this vessel: most of our trainee crew have been reassigned; Wascally and my son Jaws are exploring some new surf... and Retox feels like a house with all the children gone... No. More empty even than that..."

Quack sighed, and shook his head.
"Status, Mr Hurley?"
"On course, Captain. Estimate Stardock in one point two hours."

The burden of command weighed heavily on Quack.

"That's not enough time for an in-flight movie, and showing an hour-long show would still leave people with too much free time."
"What about three Simpsons episodes, sir?"
"That'd be an hour and a half."
"But we've cut out the ads, it wouldn't take that long."
"Excellent. Make it so!"

---

Deep in neutral space, a freighter was waiting for someone, and its captain was impatient.

"Keep scanning, boys - where the hell are they?"

A woman reached over and hit the comm panel.
"Commander Ray: this is Valkris. I have obtained the restricted data, and am ready to transmit."

A harsh voice echoed out from the speaker.
"Excellent work, Valkris. Choi ars tanamarie!"

As soon as those magic words were uttered, the space around the freighter started to shift, and a ring ship appeared - a massive ring, totally encircling the freighter.

"Data sent, Commander. You will find it useful."
"Then you have seen it?"
The woman paused. "Yes, my lord."
"Unfortunate." was the reply.

The ring suddenly glowed brightly. When the glow faded, nothing was left of the freighter but debris.

On board the ring, Ray loaded the data file into his viewer, and a video recording of EBZ began to play:

"To fully understand the implications of this strategy, it is necessary to review the theoretical data on the Genesis Crank..."

Ray watched, fascinated, as the details of the Genesis Crank were revealed. A powerful device, indeed. It was literally Genesis - the illusion of skill from skill-lessness. But he would destroy it, and all those who used it. Then, with the Genesis Crank destroyed, Ray could go about destroying every overlord who played on brain-dead levels such as crippling or below. Maso was the only way to play, and all who opposed him would die a painful death. Mercy was for the weak.

He had once been happy and carefree, skipping through the forest and picking wildflowers with the forest elves. All that changed when Wild Wombat took advantage of him, stole his gold medal, and made him look like an idiot. He'd ended up dancing naked through the corridors of his ring-ship, singing:

"Doe, a deer, a SEXY deer,
Ray, a total super-star!
Me, the greatest wiz around,
Far, a long way to a bar!
So, you think you're really good?
La-ddie, you’re-a gonna die!
Tea - not half as good as beer,
and that brings us back to doe!"

Ray shuddered at the memory of that night. He'd felt naked without his gold medal, and he'd felt naked without his clothes on. Everything good and pure within him had died that night, and he had remade himself as Evil Ray. Revenge burned in his mind - revenge upon Wombat. But now that he knew Wombat was hiding on the Cranking Planet, Ray had the opportunity to destroy the Genesis Crank and all its users in one swift stroke. Ray let out an evil belly laugh, and stroked his whiskers diabolically. Then, he drank from his cup of herbal tea with a malicious expression, and scratched his arse with an evil grin on his face.

---

"Now entering Stardock, captain."

As the Retox was guided to its assigned docking clamps, all the crew's eyes were drawn to a new ship in another docking bay. It was only a colony ship, but a colony ship the likes of which they had never seen before.

"What is that thing?"
"It's a prototype starship, for something called Threedee."
"Threedee? Never heard of it."

Hurley interrupted them.
"Captain! There's a life-form reading in Wombat's quarters!"
"I'm on my way."

---

As Quack entered the room, he saw someone sitting in Wombat's favourite chair. Someone brown and furry, but Quack couldn't see much as the lights were off. Could it be... ?

"Wombat? Is that you?"

"Why did you leave me on the Cranking Planet? I've got eighteen little ones to feed, EIGHTEEN..."

Quack ran over and spun around the chair, to come face to face with Dr Koala.

"Not this shit again!" Quack said angrily. "Look, I told you - you don't have Wombat's bloody 'katra'. And stop putting on his clothes, you pervert!"

Quack paused as he smelt the wine in the air, and sighed. That explained it.

"Remember what Dr Quinn said? You've already got two personalities inside you. The left side of your brain has one, the right side has the other. There's no room for anyone else." To emphasize this point, Quack pulled out a marker pen and wrote "NO VACANCY" on Killa's forehead. Killa was too drunk to care.

---

In Stardock Command, Quack was pleading his case to an admiral.

"We'd like to go back, see if we can convince Wombat to rejoin us - "

"A lot's happened since you left. The Cranking Planet's been declared off-limits - the Galactic Council is still debating what should be done about the Genesis Crank."

"But Admiral, if there's even a chance we could bring him - "

"I said no, and that's my final answer!"

Quack sighed, said his good-byes, and walked to the turbolift. There, the rest of the posse was waiting.

"The word is no. I am therefore going anyway."
"What about the colony ship? They'll be able to catch us in no time!"
"We'll have to sabotage it somehow."

Normally, Jaws would have gone on this undercover mission, but he was still on holiday. However, one of the pirates stepped forward immediately to take his place.

Quack nodded.
"Very well, mister. We'll be aboard the Retox - contact us when it's done."

---

Two Stardock guards were patrolling the corridors aboard the colony ship. They heard a clinking sound up ahead, and quickly drew their weapons. They rounded the corridor, and saw a bottle rolling on the floor. A guard bent down to pick it up, and read the label - Bundaberg Rum.

His companion suddenly screamed out. The kneeling guard looked up, and the last thing he saw was a flash of white fur, dropping from the ceiling.

CypherPax got up, then picked up the bottle. He took a swig, put it back in his fur, and kept moving.

---

"Message from CypherPax, sir. Mission complete, he's beaming back."

Quack looked around the bridge of the Retox. It was time.

"Power up engines! Release docking clamps! Set course for the Cranking Planet!"
"Sir, Stardock is hailing us."

Frogboy's voice boomed through the sound system: "You do this and you'll never sit in the Veteran's chair again."

Quack cut off the transmission.
"Hurley, engage warp drive!"

The Retox disappeared in the most spectacular flash of light its 2-D engine could generate.

---

Frogboy smiled to himself. He'd seen the computer animations of this colony ship in action, but he'd been longing for a chance to take it for a cruise himself. Now, finally, he had an excuse.

"I'll teach them to mess with an Avatar. Engage trans-warp drive!"

He felt the power of the 3-D engine beneath him, and watched as the stars on the viewscreen began to stretch into white streaks, when the ship began to shake. With a vicious jerk, the streaks turned back into stars and the ship lost power. Appalled, Frogboy looked at the computer console for an explanation.

"Your system does not meet the minimum requirements to run the selected application."

Frogboy pounded the panel angrily, then stopped and looked at the damage he'd inflicted. As he smelt the burning circuitry around him, he realized he'd done much more damage than just a dented panel. He made a mental note to send CariElf lots of chocolates, and give her a day off. She had to be kept out of the office until this damage was fixed - if she found out he'd trashed her brand-new ship, there'd be hell to pay.

---

Back on the Retox, Cypher reached into his fur, pulled out a 3-D card, and tossed it to Dr Koala.

"A souvenir for you, Doctor. From one surgeon to another."

Koala looked at it for a moment, then turned his attention back to the viewscreen.

"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"Are we there yet?"
"Yes."
"Good, let's beam down."

---

"Are you sure he's here?"

The pirates looked around the alien landscape of the Cranking Planet. All around them, strange flowers that looked like galaxies were growing, bursting open, and dying, all in the space of seconds. On this planet, the normal rules of space and time did not apply.

"The sensors said there was a wombat life-form in this area. It's hard to tell, exactly, there was a lot of interference."

The pirates heard a cry in the distance and ran towards it. There, they saw an infant wombat, stuck in a puddle of mud, waving its paws in the air.

"My God! The unstable fields on this planet, they've somehow turned him into a child!"
Quack walked over to pick up the wombat, but was taken out by three more wombats dropping from the trees above, and ended up face-first in the mud.

CypherPax and Killa Koala nodded proudly.
"I'd give the middle dropper a 9.3, easily." said Cypher.
"9.3? That's a bit harsh, don't you think?"
"Oh, I liked his airborne style, but he missed the landing. He was supposed to land on Quack's face and cover both his eyes, but he only covered one."

"What's all the ruckus!" yelled out a familiar voice.

"Wombat! Yay!" chanted the pirates in unison as Wild Wombat climbed out of a hole in the ground.

"What are you guys doing here?"
"We're here to take you home!"
"Bloody hell, if Ray finds out where I am he'll kill me! I just hope he didn't follow you - "

"Guess again, my furry friend!" echoed a familiar voice from thin air.

"Oh, you're kidding. Thanks, guys." muttered Wombat as Ray materialized in front of him. Evil Ray, that is, wearing robes as black as night.

"You shouldn't have come out of that hole. Now you are mine!" said the wizard in his best evil voice.

"YOU WANT THIS? COME AND GET IT!" Wombat yelled defiantly as he held the gold medal proudly in the air.

Ray uttered some magic words and pointed at Wombat. Wombat jumped back as the ground cracked apart, and a red-hot lava-flow could be seen underneath. Wombat ran off, but the ground continued to break apart under his feet.

"Um, okay, go and get it then!" he said as he tossed the gold medal backwards over his shoulder, not looking back.

Driven by his insane lust for the medal, Ray leapt forward and grabbed the medal in mid-air. Only then did he realize he was above the lava-flow, and there was nowhere to land but in the lava. There was no time for his normal teleportation spell, the lava was so close he could touch it, and he was falling fast...

Obi-Wan! The thought leapt, unbidden, into his mind. Obi-Wan had mentioned another way to him, a long time ago. "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Ray clung onto those words with all his mental power, for words were the key to memory. If he focused on the words, the other details of the spell would surely follow -

Ray disappeared, leaving his empty robes to float into the lava.

---

The pirates ran to the edge of the lava-flow, and saw the last of Ray's robes get swallowed up by the lava.

"We got him! I'll be damned, we finally got him."
"Well, that wasn't so hard, was it?"

Quack looked forlorn.
"We made it... but we sacrificed so much to get here."

"Oh my God... you didn't set the Retox on self-destruct or anything, did you?" asked Wombat.

The duck laughed.
"Pfft, of course not! What do you think I am, an idiot! I just meant that we missed the rest of the Galactic Peace Ball."

"It doesn't have to end like this, you know." Wombat whispered, looking around nervously.
"What do you mean?"
"If we slingshot around the sun, we can - "
"Time travel?" Quack said loudly.
"Shut up! The Secret Order of CariElf's got spies everywhere!" said the wombat urgently. "If they find out we're doing illegal stuff like that, they'll anomalize us for sure!"

Quack and Killa exchanged knowing looks.
"I don't think the Secret Order will mind too much, as long as we don't screw around. Okay, let's go back to the ball."

Killa interrupted him.
"We could do a run to the shops on the way. Jaws said he wanted something new when he got back - how about some humpback whales?"
"I thought they were all extinct!"
"If I remember correctly, there were still two alive in 1986 - George and Gracie. We've got room to carry them, and they'll look great on the banquet table."
"We'll need some more wine as well - Killa, what's a good year for a red?"
"I liked the 2001, myself."
"Okay, we'll add 2001 to the list of times we're visiting. But remember the rules, people. We're just doing some shopping. None of that great-grandmother bullshit, y'hear? You know what I mean! That reminds me - security: I want Dr Quinn and the Sectoids locked up for the duration of the mission."

Quack had an after-thought.
"And in separate rooms this time!"

---

Ray looked around at the familiar bridge on his ring-ship. He was home. He strutted around the bridge, proudly holding his gold medal in the air. "I have it! Finally! No-one will ever take this away from me!"

That's when he realized that people weren't looking at his medal. He looked down, and realized he was naked again.

"He should just be glad Cotal isn't here to see this.", someone muttered.

On board the Survey Ship of Doom, the Spymaster was sitting at a console, monitoring transmissions from all over the metaverse. He smiled at the pictures his bug on Ray's ring-ship had sent him, and hit the PrintScreen button. His contact at the Metaverse Review would pay a hefty prices for pictures such as these...

Hmm, I would beg to differ. Certainly good wines, but for me the Cooawarra for Cabernet, of Heathcote for Shiraz are superior.

Wouldn't mind a taste off though!!! ;) ;)
