Energy fields around my ships?

What are those pulsing lines around my ships. Do they need repair? Is it an energy field? Other races ships don't show the same lines.

It's the damage animation. If you have less than 80% of your health, you get the first level of damage, and so on. You don't necessarily have to be damaged to get the damage animation; if your survey ship goes through an anomaly and gets more base hitpoints, it will show the damage animation, since it's not at full strength.

After the first time I press turn all my ships seem to show damage. Are they created at less that 100%?

Umm...actually, I think that they are...I'm not sure if that's intentional or not because I didn't write that code. I'll check into that.
