I got problems

(red eight on black nine).

before he died
my brother used to sit for hours
playing solitaire silently in front of
the tv
the sound turned down all the way.

he would turn off his hearing aids and
read lips on the faces of black and white
and forty shades of gray

(black queen stack over the red king).

he would surround himself with empty
beer cans and the ashes of a thousand
cigarette butts,
late into early morning he smoked and
drank and muttered to no one in particular
or maybe me,

"I got problems you wouldn't understand."

then take a long drink of beer and a deep hit from his
cigarette, shuffle three cards to the table and stare into
the possibilities of out-smarting the cards one more time,

(black jack on red queen).

it's almost three a.m. and I just finished my last
joint and I'm playing solitaire on my laptop, sometimes
the voices in my head say "I got problems you wouldn't
understand."

(red queen on black king).

I think I understand now, bro.

nice one. I really felt part of that, like right there.
