what do you pray for
after the alleluia's, glory be's, and
spiritual mutterings drifting to God
like vapors of steam rising above a
room of good intent and holy wonderment,
how alone does it feel to pray for the healing of
cousin Bob or Mother or Father or grandma's liver
when God's loved ones are scattered in heaps and clumps
like rat shit all around you
bleeding in words the science of metaphors lacks to explain
or conjure gate
we pledge faith with works but our sins brew in
well thought out plans lacking perspective leaving
rows of "pretty in pink" stucco houses and credit
card debt and nothing left over for doing good
in spite of ourselves,
if we are soldiers for the Lord we are a lackadaisical
group of sunshine patriots more concerned about the
chances of rain than a strategy for defeating the enemy--
habitat for humanity is a band-aid on a shotgun wound
Feed the Children is an institution--that says it all.
we feed more like a rabid pack on the bones on our own. concerned more
about how we feed, instead of who we feed. choosing between two goods
while no good is being done, and another bloated belly passes on the tv screen
between dinner and the coffee after,
what do you pray for,
have mercy on us--sinners.
