checkboxes - twelve images?

what does 'mixed' mean?

The layout for a checkbox is three lots (non checked, selected, and mixed) of four images (normal, mouseover, pressed, disabled)...

My question is, what does 'mixed' mean?

Eh? Huh?

Ever come across a checkbox that's greyed out? It's not checked, but its not unchecked either...somewhere in the middle. That would be the mixed state, not very common...but I have seen it on occasion.

Say for instance you select multiple files in Explorer, if you then open the Properties window for the selection and some of the files are read-only and some aren't, then the checkbox for that property will appear in a "mixed" state. In the default Luna VS it's shown as a green box instead of the green tick.

I think thomassen has it right, but I've never been quite sure, either. I feel better knowing I've been in such good company, Tim.
