Music not working

I'm having problems with the music on XP with Sound Blaster Live. Sound effects work just fine, but music is just beeps, clicks, krääks, and so on (sounds very awful). When I play those MP3 files with Winamp, they work just fine, but they don't work in Galciv.

Is anybody else having this problem?

And if I remember correctly this problem has been on with all betas.

Hmm...well, if you've got XP, you have the latest directx version, so that's not likely the problem, unless you happen to be one of the directx 9 beta testers and there are issues with that. :) Just to be sure though, could you try running the directX diagnostic tools?

I have directX 8.1 and according to diagnostics its working just fine. And so far galciv has been only program showing this problem.

hmmm...the mp3s are installed to the music folder, correct? If they play fine in winamp, that probably means that the actual files are ok...

Cari,

A large number of us have commented about sound problems through the later Alpha builds and all the beta builds. I still get a loss of sound from GC that starts with one thing and progresses to others (I mean one time the planet sounds will quit first and progress to the main screen music quiting, another time the sound affects will be first to go, etc.). Restarting the game ALWAYS brings back all of the sounds, so it doesn't look like a saved game will do you much good. You just have to play a game long enough for it to start failing. It often takes a couple of hours of game playing before it fails.

Cheers,
Jack

And I forgot to mention in previous message, that my problem is on right from the beginning.

Still one more thing that I just remembered and retested: Music works fine in main menu, but it never works in the game.

Cari, I have the same music/sound problem as Jack.

Yes, I know about the losing sound problem, but this one is a bit different. It's really odd that Periz only has trouble in game, not at the menu. Since he can play the mp3s before he gets in game, that would seem to indicate something like the DirectSound buffer for the mp3 player is getting messed up when a new game is started, which wouldn't affect how the sfx wavs are played because they have their own buffer.

Your last conclusion seems to be in right track, but I really don't know what could be causing it. Maybe this is just something in my installation, since nobody else has reported it.

Have you ever tried un-installing and re-installing just the multimedia files? If you return to the main menu while in a game, do the menu mp3s still play correctly?

Music works fine when I return from game back to main menu. I'm now trying fresh install of galciv. I'll let you know later how it goes.

I just got it reinstalled and the same problem remains. Actually I noticed this time that at least some of the musics are playing just OK, but those beeps&clicks just hide them behind (music is played very quietly and these beeps&clicks come up very loudly).

Periz,

Someone may have forgotten to mention it but a long time ago they added a volume control, which seems to work only for the music, not the sound affects. The pad minus key (-) decreases the volume and the pad plus key (+) increases the volume. Have you tried these and did they have any affect on the problem?

+ & - really have effect on the music volume (didn't know that before). Unfortenately they also make the beeps&clicks just louder or more quiet.

So no help from that.

Hmm...I though that we changed +/- to be for the minimap zoom...

I had a problem with clicks and stuff today when I was at the planet data screen...it was the first time I'd heard something like that. But it could have been caused by the debugger.

The guy who wrote our mp3 player for Gal Civ suggests that you make sure that you have the latest drivers, because problems have been reported for your sound card(pops, hisses,...)with dshow/wmp and older drivers/included drivers.

I have newest drivers from SoundBlaster.com installed, so it cannot be that (I actully just reinstalled them last weekend, because I was starting to think that too).

And Galciv is the only program having trouble with the sound card.
