The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has given the go ahead to the proposed merger of Gamestop and Electronics Boutique. The merger would create the second largest game retailer, with about 20 percent of the market, second to retail giant Wal-Mart.
Since the announcement of the merger, that we covered in April, the companies have seen their stock prices increase by over 50 percent and jumped again after the news of the SEC approval. In the announcement the companies detailed that investors would have a chance to vote on the merger during the annual stockholders meeting to be held October 6th. If the merger is approved then the stage will be set for a larger Gamestop chain, with over 3200 stores, but as announced before there are to be a few closings and a few name changes.
