System Requirements

I just got the demo and i totally love the game. But, i go to order it and it says i need a 600 mghz processor. I only have a 500 mghz celeron, and 192 mb of ram. Ive seen people run the game on slower p3's, but how will a celeron work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Alex

Heh, you think Celerons are total crap too. Well, people have been running it on PIIs, so a Celeron that is only 100 MHz slower than what is required should do fine, just don't play on Gigantic galaxies.

How old is your celeron? If it's a recent vintage, it's actually a modified p3 (katmai) and should do fine. If it's older than a year or two, you may have trouble.

I ran GalCiv on a 400 Mhz K6-2 with 128MB of RAM and it was fine in Win98. If I played Gigantic or Large, then it would get really slow before I could finish so that's the only problem. I've upgraded to 1.5 Ghz and 512 MB of RAM and it runs great now :) You will be fine if you don't mind playing on Medium and smaller maps. Also you can disable the music or the movies if they give you trouble. I haven't tried to demo, but I think it runs the same as the retail but without the multimedia. If your happy with the speed of the demo, then it should be alright. Which OS are you using?

Im using windows 98 too, and yeah, the demo disables movies and limits you too a small or tiny map

It should still be ok as long as you stick with win98. 2000p or me would probably be too much.

You might have problems on Gigantics but not all that much.

I have a p3 (coppermine) 600, 128mg Ram and it ran ok

I actually think your amount of Ram may be slightly more important than processor speed here. I'd recommend 256 at least. And with ram so cheap, a 128 mg dimm pc100 costs only about 20 bux.

The minimum requirements are somewhat overinflated, in my opinion, but for good reason. In my experience, people today seem to think slightly slower means 'omg!1 i kant play tihs its two slwo!!!1!1!11oneoneeleven.'

For reference, I'm playing GalCiv on a Pentium-MMX 200MHz with 80MB RAM without any significant problems that a bit of paitence wouldn't solve. On Gigantic galaxies at harder difficulty levels the AI's next turn processing can drag on a bit, but it's not really problematic in any sense of the word.

OMFG, that must be a guiness record or something. You really should consider upgrading that a little bit. That's insane, next there'll be someone who got it to work on their 286.

You have learned patience, young grasshopper! You can probably eat a sandwich during the delay between turns!

Mmmmm...sandwich... :d

Sorry, got distracted!

When I play gal civ on my home computer, a Pentium 900MHZ with 256 MB of ram and it strangley runs really slowly, even on a tiny galaxy.

On my laptop, a Pentium 2.2 GHZ :) with 256 MB ram it runs just peachy, except sometimes when i'm loading a gigantic universe far into the game.

That is upgraded a bit. When I first started playing the beta versions, I only had 48MB RAM.

I do have a Celron 300 with 96MB RAM sitting on the floor half-assembled, though.

I loaded it up on a 486 dx2 66 64mg ram. Unhappily, I could not set the record. There is indeed a bottom end.

The absolute minimum requirement appears to be a Pentium of some sort and enough RAM for Bink video. Whether the Cyrix 5x86-66 chip qualifies Pentium-class or not for this purpose is still in question. AMD K5s should work though.

not true. The demo is on a medium map, contrary to what the demo states. It's no big deal, but if your not aware of this, you might be looking forward to a gigantic map and be a bit disappointed.
small is 4x4 per the manual.
demo is 5x5 if you count the sectors.

Disappointed when you play gigantic? I remember when I first saw gigantic. I just sat there and stared in incredible happiness.

As I am sure I will too. I was speaking comparitively.

Keeping inline with the topic, am glad to see others not having trouble with the WinXP built in firewall and Metaverse.

No problems for XP with me.

Actually 4x4 is Tiny, 5x5 is Small, 8x8 is Medium, 12x12 is Large, 16x16 is Huge, and 24x24 is Gigantic.

Not according to this http://www.galciv.com/encyclopedia.asp?action=showpage&page=http://www.galciv.com/docs

Galaxy Type Size in Sectors
Tiny 3 x 3
Small 4 x 4
Medium 5 x 5
Large 8 x 8
Huge 10 x 10
Gigantic 12 x 12

If the SD online user manual is wrong, it's not my fault. ;)

The original manual wasn't written by Stardock, and, last I checked, not all of the corrections have been made to the version on the SDC or on this site yet.
