Systems defecting to a dead race?

Had a couple of Terran systems defect to the Drengin (I assume because of low morale). This isn't so odd because I had flipped to Star Democracy too soon and wasn't able to keep morale up.

The only problem is that the Drengin race no longer existed in the game.

When a system defects to another race shouldn't the game check to see whether the race is in play?

Another oddity was that one of the systems that defected was my home system. I think it should be a bit harder for your home system to say: "We dislike your style of governance so much that we defect to the side of the bad guys of the universe".

I'm not aware of any code that causes them to defect yet.

I can send you the saved game that exhibits the issue if you like.

Maybe the Drengin had a couple of transports left?

Nope. In 1Z if you snarf the last of a race's planets all of their ships go dead in space.

Let's use what happed to Sol system as an example:
one turn it was under my control with half a dozen of my ships in orbit around the system. Next turn the planet becomes owned by the Drengin and all my ships that were in orbit pop up on the galactic map right next to the planet.

There was no combat that took place and no diplomatic action that resulted in the transfer.

In the space of a turn the Drengin went from being out of the game and no prescence on the diplomacy screens to having 3-4 of my systems, still with no prescence in the diplomacy screens.

I could talk to them by virtue of selecting one of their new systems and whacking the "Speak to" button at the top of the system planet listing. Doing so brings you into the normal diplomatic "Speak to" screen.

At that point they were willing to trade my systems back to me for technology.
