Funcom has announced that their free MMORPG, Anarchy Online, will continue to be free through 2007. The extension is only available for new accounts and only includes the original game itself, meaning users will have to pay if they wish to access the three expansions.
The original offer was announced back in December 2004, and was only supposed to last for a month, but after signing an advertising deal with Massive Inc. the free time was extended. Users will still be hit with in-game advertising from Massive, which helps keep the costs down and free to new users. The combination of free gameplay and in-game advertising has led to "more than 400,000 new players" signing "up during the last ten months, and extremely few MMO titles can show a similar increase in registrations in the same timeframe."
