Does anyone have a working SmartException?

It's never worked for me using WinXP. I deactivated it a while back.

I have flushed out of my WinXP-controlled PC any trace of SmartException. I did not like the way it had insinuated its tentacles in my system. So it has been deactivated, as Mike Nino has done.

I simply e-mail the GalCiv debug.err file to Stardock when there's a problem to report and document.

I maintain a very clean OS. I am very prudent when confronted with possible sources of infection or chaos. I never visit porn web-sites for the very same reason. :VOMIT:

I haven't tried to restart it since the last update, but there was a link to a version of SE that did work here somewhere.

Just as a note, however, I wouldn't suggest killing everything from SmartException of you're an OD subscriber. The part of SmartException that seems to have been causing the crashes is (according to a post in the OD newsgroups) eventually going to be used for shared processes in various Object Desktop programs. SE is just the first program that is set up to use it.

The problem is that Windows ME does not give any exception data when an exception occurs. This makes debuging crashes almost pure guess work. Have you ever wondered why Cari has so much trouble solving crash reports that don't include exception reports? The key questions are not answered: What instruction crashed? What data was the crashing instruction using? Where was the data located? Etc.. Nothing but an exception report will provide this data.

Thanks, Lt. Lucky Jack, for your very credible point. I am fully capable of revising my opinion on a subject, so your technical argument convinces me to reinstall SE. I will do so immediately after completing the present message. I have two small questions for you:

1. Why did you indicate Windows ME when I had mentioned Windows XP as my computer's OS ?
2. Under what folder & file-name will that "exception report" be located ?

I've just sent an e-mail to Admiral CariElf concerning this whole thread. I'll wait for her expert opinion on the SmartException business before reinstalling it. I run a very clean OS : I'm afraid reinstalling SE will mess with it. Have you not written, LJ, that you considered rebuilding your OS because of SE's failure ? I'm not ready to go that far to serve the SmartException daïmon. :notsure:

Not here I have version 0.90 running but it hasn't actually "caught" a crash. The only good thing about this version is that it's the first iteration of SmartException that hasn't resulted in either startup or shutdown problems for my Windows 2000 system.

It should appear in the same directory that SmartException is installed to. I don't know offhand where that would be on NT, but just for somewhere to look, on 9x it's normally '$WINDRIVE$/Program Files/Stardock/SmartException' or '$WINDRIVE$/Program Files/Common Files/Stardock'

Before I removed it on my XP system, in early August, it was located at C:\Program files\Common files\Stardock\Smart Exception, which was set-up by default because I had never been aware that SE had been installed until it had created problems after startup & reboot.

I never installed version 0.90 because I was frightened by the problems I had experienced when trying to uninstall and purge all traces of the previous version. I even had to go into the Windows Registry to track down all of SE's tentacles.

I think that Lt. Lucky Jack is technically correct, in his posting above, but especially after reading all the postings on this thread, I have become very wary of the effects of this "smart" program on the OS's of the NT family (Win 2000 & Win XP). So I will prudently wait for Admiral CariElf's position on the matter.

I haven't had SE working on my WinXP box for a while now.. not since the initial MCPserver problems. At the best I can say is that it is running, but is not trapping anything.

Ok, Ian tells me that SE is web-based now and that it won't save any files to your harddrive if it does generate a report, but it SHOULD be popping up a dialog. I'll see what I can do about it, but in the meantime, if you have save games that can re-produce the crash within a few turns, zipping them up and sending them to me is always a good alternative or even addition.
