This sounds as if either a widget or gadget caused a problem with your system

I would suggest the following. Boot into safe mode and delete everything in the folder C:Documents and Settings\"your account name"\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX\WidgetCache. Make also sure that the GadgetCache folder and the CurrentTheme-folder are empty. Then try to boot into normal mode.

Alternatively you can try and use the Zapper https://www.stardock.com/files/odnt_zapper.exe to uninstall DesktopX. This zapper should remove anything related with DesktopX and should remove/clear any chache's. Reboot and then try to reinstall again.

If you have your system working again with DesktopX installed, try and add one widget/gadget at a time and reboot to find out which one causes the problem.
