2D Tools Meet 3D

Autodesk Inc. has announced that it is purchasing 3D games tool creator Alias Systems with the deal to be finalized in about six months. Alias is the firm responsible for Maya and Motion Builder, while Autodesk is best known for its AutoCAD program. Autodesk managed to come up with $182 million for the purchase which they hope will strengthen their position in media and entertainment sectors. Autodesk has stated that it will continue to develop both their own tools and Alias' since they are for different sectors.

"This acquisition is designed to leverage the strengths of both companies," stated Alias president and CEO Doug Walker. "Alias' customers will benefit from nearly $300 million in R&D spending while having access to new and complementary products and technologies. Together, Autodesk and Alias will deliver products and services that give form to great ideas from the fantasy world of film to the factory floor."
