Jackson Slams EA

Director Unsatisfied with LOTR Games

In a recent NY Times article Peter Jackson, famed director behind "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the upcoming remake of King Kong, admitted that he did not like how Electronic Arts handled the games, and that was one of the reasons that King Kong is being made by rival Ubisoft. The other reason you ask? A game by the name of Beyond Good and Evil.

Jackson explained that the lack of input he had on the LOTR games, even though EA advertised that his access was "above and beyond expectations," and the cinematic storytelling of Beyond Good and Evil lead him to chose Ubisoft and Michel Ancel as the development team beyond his upcoming movie-game tie-in for King Kong. Going as far as to say that BG&E is one of his favorite titles.

Ubisoft has allocated a budget of more than $20 million for the game, boosting the studio from 30 to 80 employees, and hopes that it can be turned into a successful franchise with Michel Ancel at the helm and Peter Jackson on board. Jackson will also receive a percentage of the game's profits, a very unusual bonus for a director.

King Kong is set to invade November 21st for GameCube, PC, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 with a PS3 version to follow in 2006.

I guess EA's definition of "above and beyond expectations" was pretty low.
