Sony Online Entertainment has announced the development of an undisclosed MMO that will not have the traditional monthly subscription fee. The game, which has had no other information released, will certainly not be the first of this kind, with Ncsoft's GuildWars being the latest big name game to adapt the new business model. The model, which was pioneered by Chinese and Korean MMOs will instead drive revenue through the sale of in-game items and additional content.
The idea is that if the game has a large enough install base then it will justify legitimate in-game trading, exchanging real money for virtual goods. SOE's own Station Exchange, which was introduced to Everquest II subscribers, has already shown that the market is very profitable. The title is expected to have more information released shortly including its platform and target release date.
