How can I create a desktop buddy Widget?

I am not exactly an expert with this kind of stuff yet, and I'm looking to learn more. I want to know how I can create my own desktop buddy widget, without having to edit an existing one. I am also wondering if it's necessary to have a 3D program to be able to create the animation (for the desktop buddy widget).. I mean, can't I just draw each movement and make an *.avi out of it? You know, like most animated cartoons. I think I much prefer to do that one because I think I'll be able to have full control on the way the character looks when he/she moves.. Is that possible (please, tell me it is)? And also, I would really appreciate it if you guys give me links to tutorials on how to create desktop buddy widgets.. The more tutorials, the better.. Please. (And thanks and advance).

look through the developers guide on the left.

everything pretting much starts as an object. Far as I can tell .avi won't work. you'll want to convert it to a .png. You don't need a 3d program. I've done it converting gifs to png, short movies of my daughter converted from avi to png. see no reason you can't draw it. yes drawing it possible.

you also want to look through the scripting guide if you want it to do more than just animate in one spot.

Okay, thanks for the help. (lol, I thought you'd have to have an *.avi to create an animated widget.. Because I kind of recall seeing the option, "add *.avi" when you create a custom widget with the Stardock program (or maybe I'm just hallucinating)..

I could be wrong about the .avi's.

I believe they are used for the animations that go with WB skins (the copying, moving, deleting, etc's).

take a look at some of the animated objects and see what they use.
