In-Game Advertising Makes Shockwaves

Shockwave.com Becomes First Web-based Games with Ads

The Associated Press has word that Shockwave.com will be the first web-game site that will drive revenue using in-game ads. Advertisement for web-based games are extremely common, with users having to click around or on ads to get into their desired game.

The shift in advertising from the traditional setup, print and television, is due to the market losing its grasp on the target demographic, young men. The advertising business has since began aiming at the Internet, sports venues and product placement in films to hold onto their market.

"There's such a huge demand right now from brand advertisers," said Dave Williams, chief marketing officer of AtomShockwave. "And this is a huge audience, and an engaged audience."

Shockwave.com hosts more than 200 games, and claims to have had 20 million visitors play 25 million game sessions last month alone. The new advertising market will be launched Monday and will allow marketeers to insert images or brand names into the games and will even be able to track how often the advertisements are viewed.

"Consumers are not screaming for more ads," said Williams, "And we want to make sure that as we roll this out, that the places where you'll see the ads will be where you would expect to see them in the real world as well."
