killing everyone to conquer a planet

Has anyone ever taken over a planet WITHOUT killing 100% of the population?

There have been times when I've conquered a planet with a medium-to-high population (10,000 or so). I shudder a bit as I watch their numbers drop steadily until they reach 0. Wouldn't it make sense that occasionally a race will surrender to AVOID complete extinction of their race (like, when the population reaches a certain percentage of the original number, they just give up and hand you the planet)? Or are they all so zealous as to fight to the end, every man, woman, and child?

Or, for the truly evil players of us out there...what if your ideal intent is to take over the planet and put the population to work as slaves? You can't, because you've just slaughtered every single inhabitant. I've often wondered about this, probably should have asked it sooner.

When you invade a planet I believe and somebody correct me if I am wrong, you wipeout only the enemy troops.

Yes if the defenders do not have a chance at random they should be allowed to surrender.

It would be nice if you were given an option like there is when you colonize a planet with an existing populaiton on it. Such as using them as slaves, putting them in an isolated location, or exterminating them(other options?).

Each choice would brings about an adjustment in morale or productivity for the population and also a change in your "moral alignment." (again, like colonizing at times)

Perhaps you do only wipe out the enemy "troops", but the number of troops exactly matches the total population (for example, if you just click on the star system to get that info before invading).

It might be neat to have the occasional choice like alien13c suggests.

And the number of troops you leave on the planet starts constituing the population of the planet. Pacific coexistance of the races is not possible as of now.

I know you are right invading a system kill everybody, old and young it does not matter.

It sounds too savage when you are tring to play nice and the enemy started the war. Even in the so called "war on terror" the US justs want to find the criminal responsible.

There was a thread the topic was on a conquered planet uprising in revolt. Wiping out whole populations and uprise would not happen.
