killing everyone to conquer a planet

Has anyone ever taken over a planet WITHOUT killing 100% of the population?
There have been times when I've conquered a planet with a medium-to-high population (10,000 or so). I shudder a bit as I watch their numbers drop steadily until they reach 0. Wouldn't it make sense that occasionally a race will surrender to AVOID complete extinction of their race (like, when the population reaches a certain percentage of the original number, they just give up and hand you the planet)? Or are they all so zealous as to fight to the end, every man, woman, and child?
Or, for the truly evil players of us out there...what if your ideal intent is to take over the planet and put the population to work as slaves? You can't, because you've just slaughtered every single inhabitant. I've often wondered about this, probably should have asked it sooner.
