Transports With Attack Capability

In a recent game, there was a UP vote to allow Transports to have weapons (attack of 10, I think). Whenever a transport was in route to its destination on auto pilot, if it encountered an enemy ship in its path, it would attack the enemy ship and get destroyed. I have no problems with transports being able to attack manually if I chose to. I think that transports should not drop out of auto-pilot to attack enemy ships.

I actually would prefer that NO ship should drop out of auto-pilot until it reaches its destination. If a ship is attacked in route, it can defend itself, and continue if not destroyed. If it is the ship's turn to move on auto-pilot, it should treat enemy ships as any other obstacle and go around it. I'd like to hear opinions on this subject.

It's especially annoying when it's a heavily loaded transport that decides to commit suicide in this fashion.

I think any ship that continues after its sensors detect an enemy ship without giving the player a chance to make a decision on what to do is a mistake. I have lost too many ships by not knowing what lays in wait for my ships. I WANT them to drop out of autopilot BEFORE they reach an enemy ship to give me every opportunity to prevent their destruction.

There is a current bug that takes a ship out of autopilot right next to an enemy ship AND THEN has your ship attack the enemy ship (have I seen colony ships and transports do this?). It has been reported and discussed at length, but I have yet to see what will be (was?) done about it.

Jack,

I agree with you and the bug you describe is at the root of the current problem in this area. I seem to remember a comment from Cari with respect to tweaking the pathfinding algorithm that _may_ work to resolve this issue.
