confused on morality

I've been playing for a while now, and found my style tends to drift me towards the good side of the spectrum. One thing confuses me though - as a good civ, I still can build terror stars, and have never seen any special techs or advances that are morality-specific. Should I have, or is the ability to build terror stars as a goody-two-shoes civ an indication that something's wrong with my game?

Heavens, I'll see if I can answer before Ray arrives.

There are morality-specific techs/advances.

Any morality civ can build terror stars. However, the point is that as a good civ you would choose not to build them. Sort of like New Zealand choosing not to build nuclear weapons.

What .... !!!!

no way.. Terror stars I use them in a good way.. as a mobile platform for my culture and trading bases..

This reminds me of the old saying "Guns don't kill people.. people kill people"

as I always say power isn't evil.. its how you use it. or abuse it

I don't know about that Blueie. I think any structure called a 'Terror Star' which by-the-way can destroy a whole planet, must by its very nature be classed as evil. A civ which then builds them and moves them towards other civs planets in a threatening manner, must be acting in an evil way. But I'm often wrong about these things.

It would be reasonable for any civ which builds one to have an immediate loss of diplomatic points with all other civs, and a loss of morality.

It's not an evil weapon of mass destruction, we only build them as a deterrant against the other empires that are evil. (nuclear soup)

That's an idea. Perhaps we could have "mobile" starbases without the stellar converter or whatever they call it, for a lower cost of 2,500bcs. Then people could use it for non-lethal(non-evil?) purposes.

Yeah and you can call it the Friendly Star to ease peoples worries about it when you send one drifting towards their planets.

Nar, just make a "Good StarFighter" that has the power to take out a Terror Star. :)

"confused on morality" is a great header for a thread. I just wanted to thank Jeffrey for the chuckle because it is could easily be a headline for an advice column in the newspaper and I was very happy to find it in the Gal Civ forum instead LOL.

At this moment, I play good and use terror stars as an end game maneuver. It is less labor intensive than putting together hundreds of combat transports to invade tech-maxed star systems of several planets with every system having multiple planets totalling over 100 billion alien defenders per invasion. And, it is a nice change of pace from using dozens or hundreds of constructors for culture bombing. For only 5 constructors and 5000 bc you can makes the AI's capital vanish with less keystrokes for sure. LOL.

The imortal JavaScout's site http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/
has listings of good and evil techs. I was confused about this as well. Check out your stats screen and you can see your morality rating. On JavaScout's page you can see what the minimums are for the techs you are interested in. For instance "Cure for Depression" is 70 but "The Better Way" (Trade Center) is 90.

Great idea. Perhaps the the movement rate could be increased to 2 or 3 if it doesn't contain the death star weapon.

Culture stars are already abusive enough imo.

I happen to like the idea of a moving party star minus the Death Star weaponry. As for me, I have often played good and used the Terror Star in a couple of games. Because of their movement rates, I don't like using them. Yes, I even used the tactic of piling up constructors and creating a Party star and watch it wreck havocs. :)

I would like to try to just send those cultural party star cruising through the galaxy to see what would happen. Of course, they DO have to be able to defend themselves.

BarryB if you stack ships with the Terror star you can normally move the TS greater than 1 movement point. I've had them wizzing around the galaxy.

I believe this bug has been fixed.

Anyone who hasn't seen it should check out my little sketch of one of the PanGaea Cooperative's PartyPalace TerrorStars...

http://www.kiamagic.com/pangaea/partypalace.html

...oh and Killa Koala, it is whole star systems they destroy, not just planets. I'm sure you knew this, but I have an annoying tendency to point such things out sometimes. Forgive me, I'm just evil like that... ;p

Killer Klown,

Hmm, I did try that and it didn't work. Must have done it, after this was fixed.

No, Ray said it wasn't fixed deliberately. It doesn't ALWAYS work in my experience. Keep trying. It worked for me in version 1.05 recently. I stacked a Terror Star with dreadnoughts and got 6 movement points, honest!

it is whole star systems they destroy, not just planets.

Which means the Terror Star targets the sun and not the planets like a Star Wars Deathstar.

The terror star bug is known, and involves fleets. I haven't fixed it yet because most people like that bug and I've had more annoying ones to squish.

im having trouble replicating it, does anyone have some step-by-step instructions to get the bug activated? the one time it happened to me, i think i had the terrorstar fleeted with some corvettes, and i ended up with a terrorstar that moved 10 spaces a turn.

are you a veteran of the australian-american war? (for those confused both these were things mentioned in the talk radio station in grand theft auto 3)

I do think, as per Jeff's original post, that Terror Star tech by its very name and its sheer disrepect for any living thing deserves to be an evil-only tech. Maybe down around 15 or 20 morality....

they're like nukes. how many people think every nuclear armed country is "evil"?

Whats wrong with moving party palaces around so all civilizations can enjoy them too?If they don't like it then we'll show them that they ought to.
