With Acclaim's properties still on the auction block comes the startling news that the publisher is returning to the game industry. Since filing for bankruptcy in 2004 little good news has come from the Acclaim headquarters until today. Gamespot reports that Howard Marks' new company will be called Acclaim Games, the name having been purchased for a reported $100,000 when the company went bankrupt.
Marks' new company will focus on bringing popular eastern MMOs, of which there are plenty, to the western world. Most of the MMOs that will make the transition will be targeted to the casual playing tween audience which are said to comprise of more than 75 million players in North America and Europe.
The new Acclaim will also base itself around micro-transactions, which have been boasted by Marks and even Microsoft. "These small content transactions are a proven model for millions of gamers in Asia and is directly analogous to the explosive $4 billion worldwide ring tone and wallpaper mobile phone market mainly consumed by the 8-16 group [in the US and Europe]," said Marks.
Acclaim's re-debut title will be from the Korean pioneer of micro-transactions, NHN Corporation. B.O.U.T., a robot fighting game, will be introduced to the western world as a free PC game in which users can purchase over 15,000 robot parts with real-world money. Acclaim is set to make an official statement about its return and line-up in the coming weeks, with their website stating that they are "Coming Soon."
