WhiteWolf Publishing, creator of World of Darkness and Vampire: The Requiem, has unfortunately been hacked. The company sent out an e-mail to its customer base explaining that hackers broke into their systems on Sunday, December 11th and tried to extort money from the company. WhiteWolf has brought the FBI in, as an attempt to bring the international hackers to justice.
WhiteWolf has made the incident public to protect its users, giving them fair warning to change any passwords that may be linked to their accounts before the information is posted on the Internet. The hackers managed to exploit a flaw in the publisher's software, which enabled them to see user data, including usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords. WhiteWolf doesn't believe that any credit card information was compromised, and the hackers haven't claimed that they have any.
TwisedPolygon reports that the hackers have e-mailed some of WhiteWolf's customers, offering them stolen information for $10. WhiteWolf has declined to state the amount of money they were being extorted for and have not said how many customers may have been affected.
