Other Races?

Any ideas?

Well, I know it's a bit late now (with release being a mere few months away), but I've only just found out about these games, and I had this idea/question burning away so I just had to post it.

From looking at the racial lineup, it seems that most of the different types of frequently used races/civilisations are present in galciv2, with the attractive race (the Altarians), the humans (humans), the warrior race (Arceans), the covert race (the Drath), the avericious capitalists (Korx), the mystical race (the Thalans), the real baddies (the Drengin), the techno-anti life people (the Yor), the nice but abused ones (the Torians) and so forth. We also have all the normal types of species, the reptiles, insects, mammals, aqautics etc. but one sort of race seems entirely absent; the eco-friendly ones. They usually pop up in all sci-fi stories; the race that opposes wholesale development and technological advancement, preferring to respect the planets upon which they dwell. They are often plant or animal based in design, and usually employ some from of living ship to travel between different planets and use the same technology for most of their needs. I was wondering, does any of the (as yet) officially undescribed races have a more ecological bent (i.e. their farms being more productive, being able to inhabit lower-grade planets because they are so skilled at terraforming and so on) and if not, do you think they could be added in any future expansion?

Cheers

I don't recall any major eco-friendly races in the sci- fi world.

I would like to see a bio race, like the Vorlons or Species8742,but they dont oppose wholesale development and technological advancement.

You could add an eco friendly civ as a minor race. An idea is a peaceful offshoot of the drengin that fled thier world hundreds of years ago and now live in peace abandon agression and live in harmony blah blah blah. This race shouldn't build any ships or new colonies as thier eco friendly and ships are noisy and polluting and they have no reason for space travel. Thier planet quality should be extremely high and anyone who is on friendly terms with them should get a morale boost as they can benefit from tourism to thier world. Races on bad terms can conquer them and get a nice lush planet... serves them right for being happy and not building huge weapons

Minor races with a little character add a nice bit of flavour to the game

I think minor races should be able to build small ships and have very limited growth abilities, it adds a nics variety to the game.

I agree but I was suggesting no ability to build ship for this specific minor race

Ewoks and Wookies are eco-friendly races in the sci- fi world.

Ashbery: "I don't recall any major eco-friendly races in the sci- fi world."

Alpha Centauri has an eco-faction; in David Brin's "Uplift" series, the galaxy is ruled by ecological mandates; Star Control II's Syreen were environmentalists; and in my opinion, any starfaring race must be profoundly environmentalistic or else they would have killed their homeworld prior to colonizing a new one

A race with organic ships, special organic technologies, and abilities to transform a planet's surface into an acceptable substrate (like Starcraft's Zerg) would be interesting. On the other hand, ecology and environmentalism generally decrease farming abilities... and terraforming is certainly not environmentally acceptable in most cases. I think "Environmentalistic" and "Biosynthetic" are - while both interesting concepts for a space strategy game - at opposite ends of the spectrum, as one resists change while the other forces change.

Yes!
Include them both!
Then they can debate, or shot at the other all the time!
Maybe if governing faction is replaced, some of the old loyal factionists would try a coup attempt, or try to create a separate empire. AI from such civil war-rebels/empires should be greatly improved, couse they give anything they have for the cause. The AI would be normalised again if separatists have won the war (or the regime overthrown happened)
This could also happen couse of different culture(some planets have taken the culture of another species), religion(yes, include not realistic religions in the game, will be more fun ), if overtaxed( like the americans 'tea party' or what)...
And all of the ships of newly created empire should have other shipcolors, or if the other culture is really overpowering the old, then even a whole other ship design (the other empire culture one, or a kind of hybrid)
