Space Marines

Hiya everyone,
In another post of mine I was told that the game would not have space marines. I would like to take this opportunity to suggest this within the game.

Space Marines would be combat units on board your ship. They would be there to invade other ships or fight off invasions from your enemies on your ship. These units would be of different levels of effectiveness since it would require time, money and technology to train the unit to an elite status.

Space Marines would be able to teleport onto an enemy ship to do battle with the occupants. If they win, you will be given an option to either skuttle the ship and receive a cash bonus, or keep the ship. If you keep the ship you would have to transfer crew to it, send it back to a base for repairs and if you have research crew on board, learn from the alien technologies.

This would maybe add a whole new dimension to space battles. Do you destroy the ship outright? Do you risk attacking with marines and losing? If the battle is won do you skuttle or repair? The rewards could be great, the losses even greater!

What do you all think of this idea? Someone from Stardock responding would be nice I'd like to hear thier point of view.

Hi Lyndy62,

I think the Betas have advanced to the point where no new gameplay components will be added. The game development is supposed to finish at the end of January (I read this in a recent Stardock post) so they have time to ship the game for the end of February.

I remember the feature you are describing being in MOO2. It was fun boarding ships and scrapping them on one of your planets to get techs that you didn't have yet.

Well, there is a very simple problem: we have no influence on the battle. There is no tactical battle. You are just watching the result of the battle. So the new dimension of space battle will only be for the AI and the developpers that must program this feature. Us, players, won't be able to actively use them. So I am not sure if it would be fun. And with Stardock philosophy, if it doesn't add something for the enjoyment of the user, you could bet with few loss that it won't be implemented.

That's a good point. Without tactical control of the ships, this wouldn't really make sense in GalCiv2.

well you could do it like planatary invasions and i guess that would be sorta fun and add some sort of tactical deph to it but like phoxnix siad i dont think it would add enough fun to be implemented

Ohh well, I'm not in beta therefore I'm not fluent in all the aspects of the game. I will trust you guys and assume that what I am suggesting just wouldnt be very feasable/fun. I thank you for posting your ideas on the subject and I appreciate your insight.

Don't give up that easy! If you think this feature would be good you can fine tune your idea and they might put it in the expansion pack. Thats what this forum is for, new ideas!

Space Empires http://www.malfador.com/ allows for tactical control of ships during combat and ship boarding. You need to first take out the enemy's ships shields and then move into range to beam your marines aboard. You can research boarding marines and defenses against boarding. Without tactical combat I don't think ship boarding adds value. I do think adding tactical combat adds value but that will have to wait until expansion packs or GalCiv3 (I hope there will be a GalCiv3!)

I like the Idea, but I think it would be more valuable to have space marines or whatever used for a better system of planet invasion and defence. The game already is quite detailed as far as ship to ship is concerned. The creation of three different forms of attack and defense already expand on the previous version of space combat tenfold. However, the planetary invasion system is still the same old boring and unrealistic system.

No matter if it is added now or in a future expansion, this is a great idea!! It would also add depth to the pirates who wouldn't be as interested in destroying ships as they would be in capturing them and strengthening their ranks. A new ship component could allow the chance for the ship to be detonated instead of being captured. And would capture of the ship allow for a political situation of ransoming the crew? Any race that was unwilling to cough up a few BC to get crew members back would certainly damage the morale of their populace for several turns! Yup, no matter how you slice it, this should be investigated!
