Good start off and what not? I try to colonize and things A LOT with a lot of luck but it seems everyone surenders to some ugly red dudes.

Have you looked at what is in the "encyclopedia" (see the buttons at the top of this forum). There are a number of clues there about where the game starts, that is, what the history was up to game start time and what "dissadvantages" you must overcome to win the game. Click on each picture in the encyclopecia for details.
