probs with OD

Hi, I am new to this skinning thing even though I've been working in IT for over 3 years now.

Now I am able to start making my own laptop look something vaguely interesting ( for some reason the companies I have worked for don't like you messing around with their PCs !!! }

Problem is I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I've just downloaded OD ( basic version ) and some funny stuff seems to be going on.

1) the min/max/close buttons on my windows screen have gone AWOL. This is a nuisance more than a problem since I've managed to find a workaround this, but I would still like these functions to be where I'm used to seeing them.

2) the ability to move windows from place to place, by clicking and dragging, around the screen has also gone AWOL.

3) When downloading docklets is there some special foler to put them in, if so what is it and then how do I actually add them to the OD?

4) does anyone know of a weather docklet that actually deals with places in the UK and not just the US - I'm not really interested in the weather in North Dakota )

5) are there any basic tutorials on OD?

Oh yeah, my OS is XPPro/SP2

Any help with any of these items would be greatly appreciated

I've never heard of ObjectDock causing problems with the min\max\close buttons, or with moving windows.

Docklets should go in the ObjectDock\Docklets folder.

The weather docklet will work for the UK. Where do you live?

Corky_O has some excellant tutorials for OD, but it seems that I've failed to save the links. While I look for them, I'm sure someone will post them.

King Tute's Articles

Object Dock Link

Object Desktop Link

Stardock Central Link

Clearing the Cache Link

Backing Up Link

Hope they all work for you.

Thanks a lot for that. Some of the replies you get from forums such as this can be quite patronising/ignored.

Will have a go with these and I live in SW London or is that too specific - just London I guess?

when using the weather dock, I think you can put in the code from weather(dot)com {not at home to try}

here's the page for UK - Link - drop down city list in option 2

pull down and click on London and you get this page: Link

notice right after: local/ there is a code [UKXX0085], that's the code to put in the docklet

re reply no.4: cheers for that. I take it by code you mean [UKfulllocalpostcode] since there don't seem to be any other codes on the page?

However when I go to set up the docklet for the weather and then try and access the info directly from the docklet get a message saying that the information is unavailable even though it is since I can access the info directly from the website itself.

These are the steps I take on setup:

- enter code as above
- click on update

Any ideas or am I just doing something daft?

Cheers

the code i put was for weather.com

i got 2 thoughtss

1) the docklet's set for another weather site (possibly)

2) antivirus script blocking and/or firewall - if you have it, check it

but if you're using the docklet that came with ODock the free version, it should work - it's what I use and it works for me using zip for USA or the codes for other.

did you put: UKXX0085 ? {note- those are zeroes, put no ? after 85, just use the 8 characters shown

yep, am using the weather.com site as provided by docklet and entered UKXX0085 ( why I don't know ) and still get weather information unavailable.

Have got the Norton security function on and the Windows firewall on as well. Should these go down before trying again?
