Expansion Idea- the One Shot One Kill concern

This is an idea for a new tech for the expansion and it's usefulness.

Tech: Advanced Fire Control
Effect: Allows the construction of Fire Control modules, that would allow a ship to split it's attack between 1 extra target. It would do such only when it realizes that a proper percentage of its attack that it does will destroy a ship, so it would use its spare attack value to attack a second ship.

If one module installed- 1/2 and 1/2. First attacks are rounded up.
So a ship with attack 9 would do a 5 and 4 attack, if the 5 would destroy a ship, otherwise it would use a 9 attack

two installed, 3 1/3's, or 1 2/3 and 1 1/3, or 1 1/3 and 1 2/3, depending on situation.

This is if people really start massing out fighters to destroy capital ships, and it becomes a balance problem...

If a Multiplayer expansion ever comes out, I could see this tactic happening. Then again, I'm speculating based on a few factors, and I didn't play the beta- as I deliberately didn't want to spoil myself.

Maybe you should wait a bit until you have played GC II and see how the battles work. You will see then if your idea is working or not. Watching fleet battle is very instructive to understand how battle are resolved.

And don't forget that if you have an attack of 9, it means that a random number will be drawn between 1 and 9, and the defenser will roll random(s) number(s) to defend against the attack.

Correct. So it might take a full attack to destroy the enemy even if they only have 1 hit point left.

the only game play footage ive seen was litle more then someone manuvering the camra around the turn one set up. just to show off its 3d. as far as i know there is no footage of a battle floating around.

the real question here...

"Would it be viable to put a 'decoy freighter' in a battle fleet ? (for the purpose of foiling 1 attack)" has yet to be awnsered. And i dont think it will be till releace. It will all depend on how the rules judge the ratio of "easy target / real threat" (it goes for high offence ships first, primarly those it thinks will be knocked out early, and thus not fire back). The best 'decoy' would likely be a smallest hulled high offence ship, with little or no defence. But you would lose it every fight, and the cost of replacement should stem the usefulness of this. But it might be a nice way to use outdated models.

As for the general oddity of 9 ap to kill a 1 hp ship, i say it cuts both ways is is of little conscern, but i think modders will look at this.

The fleet battles work on a pretty good algorithm IMO.

It dtermines the most VULNERABLE ship that does the most damage.  And targets that.  Generally speaking, that's the way most human players (at least good ones) would do it in the same case since ships do max damage until they're dead.
