Electronic Arts, the world's largest third party video game publisher announced earlier this week that it will be laying off hundreds of employees ahead of its quarterly report. The firm's report has confirmed rumors that the publisher failed to make a splash in the Xbox 360 launch window, with EA blaming Microsoft for not meeting the consumer demand for its next-gen console.
The 31% drop in profits has lead the company to lower its workforce by 5% as they grapple with making the shift to the next generation. The publisher announced in late December that they expected their earnings to be "well below" expectations but had made no mention of the pink slips that are to be distributed to its firms worldwide.
EA did end its quarterly release with some good news, stating that five titles - NBA Live 06, SSX on Tour, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, From Russia With Love, and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, all sold over a million copies during the quarter.
