Here's a little taste of how things might work. I went through one of the shortest .xml files in GalCiv 2 - the one containing ship descriptions ("GC2Ships"). There are four level-1 corrections needed [bracketed comments only provide explanation/defense for the change; the actual process of editing will not involve making bracketed comments like these]: Defender = "Watch it: I bite." [Better than original because "I bite" provides explanation for the "watch it."] <br/

BJM, I'm going to download the final 1.1 today and take it out for a spin. I figured I'd wait until the beta-releases had been finalized before tackling any grammar corrections - the devs might have done some corrections on their own. Unfortunately, it looks like Large Scale Building still gives you "the power to be very, very large hulls," so there's still work to do. Oh, and spleeze_ also offered support above. I'll check out Notepad++ in the next couple of days and maybe get start
One thing I've noticed is that races will sometimes surrender not to the leader but to whomever is the greatest threat to the leader (i.e., the second or third place). This tendency seems to override any "story-based" concerns (i.e., if you're the leader and the Drengin are your greatest rival, the Torians are much more likely to surrender to the Drengin than to you - even though they supposedly hate the Drengin because of their past enslavement). On a completely unproveable but rela
I'd certainly be willing to help. I teach English to college kids for a living, so I am somewhat competent at editing text. There is, obviously, a lot of text associated with this game. Any attempt to make extensive corrections should coordinate the efforts of several people. For my part, I'd also have some technical questions concerning how best to modify the .xml files.
I just had the same thing happen - this is the first time I've had the "turn button disappears" problem. I would add my debug.err here but it is just too long. Is there any way to attach the file?

In response to your initial issue, there seem to be two approaches to UP resolutions (and events) like this: 1) Take the resolution as another challenge to overcome - change your gaming style to try to win in a fashion different from your usual method. 2) Hit CTRL-N. It was an early resolution anyway, so you hadn't spent much time on that game.
Hey, thanks to Binky for such a well-written and thoughtful account of his experiences with Stardock and GCII. I share his experience and his enthusiasm. I'd like to add that SD also does a very good job of making programs (especially games) available for and usable by low-end laptop gamers like myself. I've been very impressed by how well GCII runs on my trusty Presario - and it looks pretty good, too. I remember one of Frogboy's posts not
Quitch: there are roleplaying elements - the text that accompanies the modifiers. Yes, most of us ignore the text after a while, but it does offer a framework for making your choices (i.e., is my race the sort that would "not meddle in things we should not understand" or is it one which would darn well open that black box?). Other "elements" are opportunities for giving your civilization its own character--desigining ships according to a th
Good quote. One of my fav episodes, by far. Incidentally, another reason why you might choose an option that isn't best for you: although this is a strategy game it _does_ have roleplaying elements. It is interesting and fun to start a game as a custom race (or a modified version of one of the core races) with a particular theme and play the game following through that theme. Such a theme might well include playing as "good" or making decisi
Has anyone else noticed a slowdown in game speed with the latest beta? I'm running on a laptop, so the game has always tended to chug a little on gigantic galaxies or when lots of ships are moving around in my field of vision - but it seems that with this latest beta I've noticed more and more considerable slowdowns, even on small galaxies.
I think the UP restrictions targeted against evil civilizations are meant to be one of the factors which balance the numerous bonuses one enjoys by being evil and chosing the evil options. They are also in keeping with the way the game seems to present good, neutral, and evil as ethical choices: good nations tend to band together while evil species tend to go it alone and act only in their own best interests. The UP offers an attempt by the
Several threads have already uncovered the difficulties associated with unlimited tech trading - primarily the powerful strategy of going through the diplomacy screen every few turns and trading the same techs to other civs for new techs, BCs or some combination thereof (AKA "tech-whoring"). Others have suggested that an option to disable tech trading would be good, and while having this option may help, I seriously doubt I would use it, as
I also ran into a Huge-sized galaxy with no minors. This could be a random possibility, since I've started several games since the latest patch and this is the only one which had no minor civs in it. You can check to see if the minors were present in the game (but conquered before you got to them) or not: either explore the galaxy or talk to the major civs. If you explore the galaxy, you can search for stars with the names of the minor civs
I seem to be having similar problems to others on this list. I am only posting in the hopes that if it is clear that multiple people are having the same problems, those problems are neither isolated nor insignificant. 1) Bryancole's Military Starbase problem - I'm having the same issue. Military starbases do not seem to offer any bonuses to ships in their area of effect. Yes, this applies to ships with weapons and defense systems (I'm not ex
It could still be creativity-based. Creativity might simply increase the chance that otherwise unaccessible tech breakthroughs happen. The +25% just indicates a positive modifier the game applies when checking to see if a breakthrough occurs. Since percent modifiers are applied in many different ways in this game, that +25% could be very significant or it could be very miniscule. Or anywhere in between. If we assume, though, that it works largely as the creativity pick worked in the f
There are so many suggestions, I can't be sure this one wasn't already put forward. But here it is: When you reload a game it would be nice to receive a message relevant to the current state of your game at the beginning. As it is now, the robot just gives the same message he gave when you started the game. Buddy, I know that Earth creatures have given us hyperdrive and the galaxy awaits...but are we at war with the frickin' Drengin in this game? Are they "slowly grinding us down" in
A couple of things: 1 small, 1 not-so-small: 1) When playing as a custom race, I have often been addressed by another race as "[Their short name]" or something along those lines. It looks like a function calling something that doesn't exist (i.e., when creating a custom race there is no place for entering a "short name" or anything like that). To reproduce: play as a custom race and wait for another race to address you about almost anything. (I don't think this glitch occu
