i think you may be confusing sympathy or sensitivity, with empathy. sympathy, awareness and sensitivity are a subset of empathy but empathy connotes being able to 'share' or experience another's condition as if it one were experiencing the situation oneself. awareness doesnt require internalization in that you can be aware that someone is in pain...neither does sensitivity since you can be sensitive to that pain (not wish to excaberate it).

But what is illuminating is the singular blame i wasnt singling any country out in my first response. i was presenting a timeline thats fairly well documented. you must have missed the comment below that one in which i pointed out the fact that australia, canada, south africa, new zealand and india (all of which were, at that point, dominions or realms of the british empire) accepted only

during those same years, 25,000 jewish refugees were permitted to land in shanghai, china--more than the combined total accepted by australia, canada, india, south africa and new zealand.

. Until 1945, few people knew what was going on over in Europe. There are people wanting to come to the US from all over the world, it wasn't like Jewish people were black listed from entering the US. They simply were considered another European on the list of people who wanted to immigrate i generally am impressed by your grasp and understanding of 20th century history, but each of those sentences contains significant innacurracies:

How does buying tax free bonds reduce their tax burden? i didnt mean to suggest that investing in tax-free bonds reduced earned income tax liabiity per se. the point of a tax-free bond is to encourage investors by sweetening the pot. im questioning the basis for that incentive. Are commercial carriers not corporations? the weight-based fee isnt the issue (although the fee structures ive seen graduate upwards

Are homeowners who claim the mortgage deduction placing an onerous burden on us also? i guess that depends on whether youre among those able to purchase a home? if youre not, and youre unable to deduct personal debt interest to the same extent as homeowners are able to deduct interest on equity refinancing, you might look at it that way wouldnt you?

the results of the la times most recent poll included a section that involved a number of 'which candidate seems to you to be" questions. those polled felt "too ideological and stubborn" applied more to Bush (58%) than Kerry (16%). in my eyes, that description applies not only to the president personally but to the administration's anti-terrorism strategy in general. it was stubborness and ideol

ray charles was an incredible talent and the world is a much poorer place without him fortunately he leaves a lot of recordings and even film and videotaped performances. my concept of what music is or should be was largely shaped by 3 recordings and a mozart composition. one of those was ray and the raelettes performing 'drown in my own tears' live in 1962. its times like this when i really wish there was a heaven

It would be like me pointing out that a know of a woman who shoplifted and wrote a post talking about women shoplifters. The question is what is the norm.
