If you give me a gift card for a book shop, I'm over the moon. It shows the person has thought about my love of reading but leaves the choice of book to me. If you gave me a Mitch Albom or Stephen Covey book as a book gift I'd throw them in the trash. Gift vouchers are great and very thoughtful gifts.

Being South African, I love spiders. We only have one species that is really poisonous, the Lactrodectus or button spider (Black widow). The first (beautiful) guy is a jumping spider. There is also a wolf spider and a crab spider. The green beauty looks like a Nephila. Beautiful pics--superb.

Unfortunately, just as man's appendix has shrunk due to a different diet than grass, it has been proven that the human body adapts over time. I foresee a time in the future when we shall be born with an inbuilt mobile phone--an ugly appendage connected to the right ear. We shall not need hands to hold it or crick our necks--it will be there from birth. More seriously, what do people say to one another that this horrible little thing must be glued to the ear for hours on end. There is no

Nice if you can get it. The price of petrol in Egypt is 1 LE and 10 piastres a litre. That works out at 9 British pence and approximately US 20c a litre. Don't know how they do it!

My dog Gus says Hi. He knows we're getting him a coat for Christmas but he wants a gallabiyeh (muslim robe). I said Gus, you're an Egyptian dog but your Christian. He growled and said: I'm converted. Great Gus, I said, I get the crackling for myself. He licked his jowls and converted right back.

Some hilarious comments Doc! I remember taking some kids camping and there were two jewish lads. Of course we packed some Franks for hot dogs. Their mother asked if the dogs were Kosher and I told her: sure, no cereal, no fat, no sodium. She went home happy. Boy, did those boys love those Franks!

Well FS, An interesting article on "dumpial aftermath". There are two solutions to this and they both work. In Egypt, and probably other Middle Eastern countries, there is a special spray attachment next to the toilet and sometimes built in. Sounds terrible but a good spray works wonders. Then there are Wet Wipes and they are also very useful. Toilet paper is actually outdated and has to be supplemented by further action. What a topic!

I'm not sure about getting hooked on Ibuprofen but they can do funny things. I had taken 3 Ibuprofen retard (about 1mg) for a bad headache one morning and spent the day flat on my back! I was dizzy, walked like a drunk and could not function at work. Spent the day in the school clinic and never took them again. I read later that Ibuprofen in high doses can mess with your blood pressure and cause palpitations. This medicine has to be taken with caution

I agree Doc. I'm not sure about the gun laws in the USA but shouldn't they be tightened up? In South Africa, you go into a gunshop and pay a deposit. Then the application goes to the police. The police look at your proficiency and the number of arms you have--then they decide on the licence. If you are a first timer, they may ask to test your ability to use a firearm.

Great article Emperor. The difference between America and Sudan is that Sudan is run by war criminals (the Hague has many of the top leaders in its sights.) America is not run by war.............(um, I think I'll take a rain check now.)

I read the Daily Mail because it is accessible in Egypt. It is a Tory paper but it also has the most vile gossip and the writers have no thought of any decent comment. The vitriol rolls out from their writers like sludge from an aged sewage plant. Here are some recent headlines (which I've tweaked in the name of humour): " Kill her, Kill her", reaction of Sud

My wife calls a a mouse a rat. You've heard that before, right? And a rat is the size of a cat. I have endured her horror for many years and invariably the rat is a mouse--a tiny thing you could enclose in one hand. She is a strong woman who is invariably turned to a trembling heap of mush by the sight of a single dropping--and, should she see the offending creature--

OK, Gid, I see your point. There are times when Aeryck loses it and patriotism will not prevent me from telling him so. Hamartano (whoever he is), is a misguided loser hanging on for fun. Personally I think they go overboard on the religion thing and the word "zealot" springs to mind.

Emperor Of Ice Cream says: "the teacher deserves the flogging...." Have you ever been to the Sudan Emperor? I have... Are you aware that the Government of Sudan has no human rights record at all? Do you know that the Sudan Darfur region is a region of mass genocide? Are you aware that the Sudanese are fleeing to Egypt in their thousands due to the inadequate governance of the country? As for the teacher, are you aware that thousands of stupid Sudanese protested against this "sm

Gideon, I'm confused by your reply. Could you elaborate? What does cheap, crude comment have to do with my country? There are dishonorable people from every country--are you suggesting I'm being biased because I'm South African and therefore feel superior? That is not the way it is. Crude comment raises its head in SA blogs just as it does everywhere. Crude internet mugging concerns me because it is personally indecent, crass and rep

Recently LW roasted Aeryck because she felt offended. I know LW's ways and she does not like criticism. She has not had the easiest life and I'm quite sure she has seen evil in every sense. However, and this is my point, there is no need for thread posters to use blasphemy in support of her. I am not a Christian in the club of bible punchers as I have my own

I'm sorry if I sound sceptical but some battles go back many generations and this is one of them. The Palestine/Israel question is extremely complicated and I'll be surprised if Annapolis works. I'll be elated if something comes out of it but don't hold your breath. Dubya is to be commended for putting it together but his peace prize is going to be a lot tougher to get than Al Gore's.

Hi Kupe, I remember the day so well. Even as a young South African (aged 16), I was completely shocked. I remember coming home from church and waking my mother up to tell her the news. We had no TV in SA then but we listened to the radio and we felt stunned--such was Kennedy's allure.

You know Doc, if you looked into the whole thing you'd probably find this emanated from an ***hole who is either over-officious, unpatriotic, or, worse, thick as a beaver's tail. It beats me how fools get onto committees!
