"HTML, XHTML, XML, VHTML, Java, Javascript, Perl, ASP, PHP, VB, VBScript, C++, C#, C, and on and on. How can a person be proficient in all of this?" I used to be a Comptuer Science lecturer and now work as a senior software engineer. Now, that is different that information systems (or IT), but they both share this problem that you are worried about. The simple answer is that you probably can't be proficient in everything. What you learn as

That's why it's not referred to as "learning." No one "learns" through the process of education. I have to disagree with you there. I have been in education systems that promoted learning and thinking. The most consistent example was graduate school. The courses that I took and the professors teachi

Thanks for the input ShadowWar. And just for the record I would like to also thank you for your service to society. I have a great deal of respect for people in the military, police, fire departments, and similar occupations. As a teenager I worked in a movie theater, and on weekends we had Sheriff's Deputies working security. In-between busy times I had the opportunity to talk with these men and I developed a great appreciation for the dut

John Kerry is not the end of civilization as we know it and you will have a say on his contribution to government in November. Mr. Cheney is not sorry he cussed at Mr. Leahy, I'm sure they've made more lunch and dinner conversation mileage out of the "skirmish" than pretty much everything else that's happened in the last couple o

So relax, Michael Moore is not your enemy, just a filmmaker. Who says a filmmaker can not be my enemy? I don't despise Moore so much for his ideas as I do for the way he expresses them. He uses the tools of deception, and while he may not state any overt lies he does try to decieve with editing and st

In general I agree with you that using "thing" can be lazy. However, there are times when no specific word quite works, particuarly when trying to describe some abstract idea. Other times it's just fun to use ambiguity and see how people react.

And just recently I learned there's this crazy law, at least in our state, that a child can only be held back once in their entire time in school...after that, no matter how poor their grades, they HAVE to be promoted Another disturbing trend that I have learned about from some of my friends that are

Most of my life I have been involved in education. My grandfather was the Dean of Education at San Diego State University for 22 years, my father was an educator in the Navy (after flying in Viet Nam for 3 tours) and after retirement became an elementary and middle school teacher. My brother is a lawyer and often teaches at various law schools. My other brother is an instructor for the Navy. And I was a teaching assistant in graduate school and lat

So I work for a rather large company that, among many other things, produces software for the U.S. Government. Today we have a code freeze for our next release. A code freeze is pretty much what it sounds like... no more coding after this point. The thing that is bothering me is that tomorrow the powers-that-be are going to meet to decide what should be done for th

I just don't understand some of the sickness we see in the world. Take this extremely sad situation. What drives a man to do this sort of act? I've always prided myself on being able to step into other people's shoes and view the world from differing perspectiv

In my experience there is a fine line to balance to satisfy a woman's desires for a jerk and for a nice guy. Sometimes they want a guy that will rush to their defense, even when they don't need defending. Sometimes they want a guy who will trust them and respect them. The problem is that I've seen these traits appear in the same girl. There is nothing wrong with that, and I certainly change my wants based on circumstance, but it means new relations

Eight to ten years ago I maintained a personal web-site at my university. All faculty and students had web accounts available on some Unix servers, and I took advantage of this to learn HTML. My personal site contained a number of pages, ranging from personal/scholastic/professional news to pictures of my self/friends/family to my initial attempts at learning Java and Applets. A
