With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, The Refuge is quite overgrown. Over the years since we lost our horses and sold our alpacas, and as we are no longer living here, but as a retreat, nature has had her way with the grounds. I went out late yesterday afternoon for just a bit and took a

With Palms together, Good Morning Everyone, If there is no stick against which to measure, What is distance? Distance becomes meaningless. Distance is only relative. All things are thus. Even in the non-physical realm. We might say God is a such a stick. Or we might say Buddha-Nature is such a a stick. But these are less sticks than pervasiveness itself. God is ever

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, Yesterday's mail brought an envelope that My Little Honey thought was a piece of junk mail. I opened it and found our contract for our house loan all ready to be signed. The new house is completed and we have but to wait for a closing date to be set. We are already anticipating moving the furniture and books and kitchen things and clothes from our condo garage. We have appointments with a land

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, In Las Cruces the air is much drier and lots warmer. Mornings at the Refuge were in the high forties, low fifties. I would get up in the dark, build a fire in the cookstove, light a candle, and practice zazen. Afterwards I would sit with coffee and the dogs on the deck listening to the forest come alive as the sun rose over the trees. Here I lazed after my wrist alarm went off at 5:

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I will travel back to Las Cruces. I am hoping that our new house will close this coming week. We will board our dogs for a few days until we know what is what. I have been thinking a lot about my practice. Not good. Better to practice! While I will open a small Zendo and invite the public to sit with me, I will continue

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I woke to see a starry sky. This means that there might be sun this morning, although the weather report on NPR did call for cloudy skies and thunderstorms. My morning zazen was serene. The quiet stillness of the forest is a comfortable reflection of the practice. The Refuge has had day after day of clouds and rain. Thes

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I am back at Daihoji Refuge. I drove through a raging rain storm coming up the mountain, but arrived safely and this morning it appears less cloudy. I woke at 5:30, started a fire in the cook stove, lit my candle and incense, and sat zazen. One of the pleasures of a day, to brings things to a stop and just listen. Just before I woke, I had a thought, "If you don't like ritual, try driving without a road.

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I can feel the cool desert air, humid from a few raindrops or the Kessin's automatic sprinklers. I see in my morning email pictures of Grandson Tate on a pony. Joy! It is a good feeling. Practice feeling your environment. Sit with your eyes closed and experience. There will be sounds, smells, and sensations on your skin.&n

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I am writing from my friends Ken and Deana Kessin's home and using their computer. My son, Jacob has to return to Sante Fe today so we drove in last night from the Refuge to have dinner with the entire family. We will send him off at breakfast today. A week at the Refuge has been a good experience, but more than that, th

With palms together, Good Afternoon All, The mountains are a delightful mix of sun and cloud with raindrops falling from time to time. I have been steady at work on getting my book edited. The process is, well, good practice. I am using one single year of my teishos from December to December and editing each of them. They are from my great year of transitions from Zen Center to Clear Mind Zen to streetZen with a twi

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I will be leaving for the Mountain Refuge for the week. I will return on Saturday for a friend's Bat Mitzvah which promises to be a wonderful experience. Yesterday's Introduction to Jewish Spirituality was quite amazing. We have a variety of students with a number of differing backgrounds. Such things almost always lead to deeper and more thought-provoking discussions. T

Yes. True. I was shot in the right side of my head, paralysing the left side of my body. Through the early years, I "recovered" much use, but in the last five ior ten years, this use is slipping away toward complete paralysis again. In addition, my executive function has diminished (the ability to organize, leep appointments straight, etc.). Memory loss is a factor as well. While in mt doctoral program I was a 4.0 student, I doubt that would be the

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, I prefer to do without doing. Be without being. Work without working. But I am not always sucessful. Doing without doing does not mean we are not doing something. Doing, being, working: these are thoughts we add to our doing. It means doing doing . This way is not the Great Way. The Great Way is the way of doing non-doing. Th

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, This morning I am typing on friend Allen's computer. I admit these last couple of days have worn me down. This morning, however, I am feeling on the uphill swing. I took a little time away from Talmud this morning to sort out my car. After the Academy tomorrow I am driving to the Refuge and staying for the week. The Refuge is a wonderful experience. I very much look f

With palms together, Good Morning All, In Spite of everything, life has its way of winding through the turns, finding, like water, both the low and the high places, and flowing on. We have completely moved into our garage and two cars. My necessaries in my car; Judy's in her car. The kids arrived yesterday afternoon just as we were putting the finishing touches on the cleaning. I was so exhausted I could lit

With palms together, Good Morning Everyone, Yesterday was not one of my finest. I woke feeling very dizzy and emotionally unstable.. So many large changes, changes which undermine my sense of stability. My son Jacob arrived and, with a friend, moved all of our furniture into the garage except a bed and a few lamps.and pillows. We are pretty much on the floor now. My other son, Jason, will be arriving this afternoon wit

With palms together, Good Afternoon All, The best way to begin a disciplined spiritual practice is to actually begin. We can read about such practices all day and night, but until we actually begin, we are no where. Of course, in a manner of speaking, there is no beginning and no end. In truth we are all involved in a spiritual practice and will be until the day we die. We may not be aware of it, we may not be very disc
