I think the advantage of the small ships is that you can produce them really fast. That way you can have two or three ship producing powerhouses (more powerplanets actually) and spam your enemy in some sort of kamikaze attacks. If you build some fast all attacking fleets of small ships equipped with weapons for which your enemy doesn't have defenses you could take his ships down without any loses or with small ones while you are pumping more ships thr
