The thing you have to watch is that the number of ships that can fleet together to defend the planet is still limited by logistics. If you have a full starport for example, chances are that not all the defenders will be in the fight.

Once, in a game I'm still playing, the Drengin were badly beaten by the Drath. I'm sure that it had something to do with a Precursor ship that the Drath uncovered. Anyway, although I kept out of the actual conflict, I cranked out a pile of ships to keep the Drengin fighting. I even built them a few starbases. Basically I saved them from total annihilation Then, when I had my economy in order

Like any modern game, this one has scaleability. That is, depending on your setup, you can turn off certain graphical elements so that you can play the game even if it doesn't look quite so pretty. There's no doubt in my mind that if someone wants the eye candy badly enough, they'll find it in their heart to upgrade that much-neglected PC which they're running. If they just want to play the game with what they have, then they'll configure away. The options also present the opportun

I actually had a problem with a pair of wings on a fighter. Despite picking out a plasma at the same size, the one on the left wing would be bigger than the right. When I took the weapons off and looked at the hardpoints from above, I could see that the arrows on one wing were bigger than on the other. The cure was to resize one of the wings a notch down and then back up, the hardpoints became the same size and I could mount the plasmas without them looking lopsided <img src="http://images.st

I would like to see some categorisation of the technology list for a spied-on race not unlike that which we see on the technology tree. Put them under headings, so I don't have to pick them out of a long sentence list. Or, maybe have an option to view another race's technology tree (however incomplete the information might be).

While you can't actually build a starbase right on top of a planet to defend it, if you build a military base nearby it can grant all sorts of additional bonuses to ships defending the planet. This forces attacking fleets to take out these fortifying bases first.

Don't use the same name for an upgraded design, is all I can say. By over-writing the actual file containing the design for a previous version, you're confusing the poor computer I tend to find affixing Roman numerals (II, III, IV etc) works okay but if you really have an aversion to something which is plainly a version number, you could take the in-game date and cipher it. So for example, 15

Bear in mind that if you need more colonists later (whether you send a full load initially or try to conserve your existing population base) you can move them by sending a colony ship. Then when you find a suitable planet that isn't already taken, you might be able to colonise it faster than it would take to send one from your capital.

The theory is that solar systems form in a swirling mass of dust and gas. Once you have that angular momentum going, it's difficult to alter it. So all the major bodies in a given solar system are likely to exhibit similar characteristics. And consequently, any bodies which formed as satellites of those major bodies are likely to toe the line too. Of course not all the bodies in the solar system follow the rule. But over millions of years the leftovers from the creation of the sol

The trouble is that at least some components have a static size and a modifier, a percentage of the ship's hull capacity. Since the hull capacity increases when you improve miniaturisation, this percentage size increases too, and therefore it's possible for a design to take up more space than is available. It's very strange, I have to admit.

If you're looking at the starport for a given planet, the tooltip sometimes does not match the ship that you're hovering over, instead it's the name of another ship somewhere else entirely.

In the ship designer, you can create ships with various weapons and defences. This is not exactly news However as you know, when you fight fleet battles the enemy targets those ships which have the highest threat level, using a formula of attack/(defence + HP) to calculate that threat level. Now if you're going to have all the same ship in a fleet then I'm pretty sure that they'll pick on the greenest one since they'll have the

Every now and then I see a movie saying that a certain minor race has stolen all of a major races technologies and would like to trade them for planets. There's just a slight snag and it's that tech trading is turned off so the only way I can actually acquire any of those techs is to invade them. Perhaps the blurb that goes along with the movie should be altered to reflect this

There are always going to be a few marginal planets where I'm not going to see the need to build a starport. I might put a factory on them initially to speed along the filling of the few tiles they have to offer, but in theory when that's done I'll probably plant a research lab in its place, meaning there are very few shields or hammers to be wasted anyway. In practise however, a little waste is better than waiting eons every time your labs get an upgrade. Of course I would prefer t

You could use the cheat mode specifically for this. With that you can give yourself all technologies and therefore be able to see all ships that you have the parts for. Thusly you can delete any designs that are surplus to requirements.

Sometimes when I bring up the details for a particular ship I see what looks like a space fighter icon (pointing up and left) but I don't know what it signifies. There are other icons, for a troop transport and for a constructor, which are more obvious. Often ships that are pretty much identical (even experience level) don't have this icon in common. Any ideas? I'm guessing I'll kick myself when I realise what it means.

As it stands, you can avoid having to move all your ships out to seperate squares (leaving them exposed and vulnerable) by removing them from the fleet, then moving them one square out and then back in. You will still have the upgrade button available until you click the fleet again. I've never had my ships attacked while an upgrade was going on, but I'm guessing they won't survive without some other ships taking up the defence.

I was working on a ship design. I wanted to move an extension pylon and a shield attached to it, to a different place on the ship ( so, purely an aesthetic change) so I first moved the shield to another hardpoint located on a wing piece. When I went to click the pylon to make it active so I could move that, nothing happened (the highlight was still on the shield) so I assumed that I had mis-clicked (it's a small pylon) so I tried clicking the filter to show only extras not functionals. That d
