For the new layer of white, you don't want it to be a shape. Just fill the selection with white (Alt+Backspace) then do the move down/right and delete step. At the way you have it now, you'd need to do a layer mask - Hide Selection. BTW, this was an older way of doing this, the steps are evolved now but I don't have time to do a new tut.

Am I right in that you only show 2 GB of RAM? With all that, why not bump up to 4 GB? Sure, you only get 3.5 with XP, but that's better than 2... My laptop beats this desktop. And it's a few years old.
