I like having limited space on the worlds now. It does pose more of a challenge and it helps you tailor your worlds to do what you need them to do. I know that the Core designs are supposed to give an idea of where to go with building your ships but I never use Core ships if I don't have to. They're too slow and their ranges stink. And they aren't affected by miniaturization so they're quickly outmoded.

I don't mean to nitpick but Japan is a poor example as they technically only have a self-defense force and are bound by law not to leave their political borders with a military force. And their military hardware really isn't that great. Some of it comes from us. Some of it is developed within country. Some of it is purchased from other countries. It's not like they have a bunch of Evangelions or Mobile Suit Gundams running around to kick Godzilla
