I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stardock is the Gamer's Game Developer. I think I am going to go buy all the rest of your products just on prinicple. BTW I hope you all have had a *chance* to play Oblivion, its kinda neat, although after playing for the past several days, I must say that GalCiv2 is by far the better product - more innovative, more polished, more thought out, more *pure*, more fun. I cant say enough how much I appreciate your inspired gamje

If you havnt already check your sound drivers. I used to have a heck of a time with games on my last motherboard. Took me gaes to find out it was some stupid on-board sound driver that was messing it all up. Ended up having to buy a 15 dollar sound blaster clone. With PCs you get much more sophisticated games than consoles. Unfortunately you also run the chance that your particular harware will have some sort of terrible conflict. My sy

Oh give me a break - you know the solution to this problem. DECOMMISION enough stuff on your conquered planets to make them LOW spending planets. WHen the population rises to the point where they are bringing in the $$$, build more stuff. MG

honestly, just play the game on higher than intelligent so you have a game that proceeds to late-game techs. You will see the truly dominating power that are ships with high, appropriate, defense. Of note, your instincts are right, and that is that defense is not totally useful untill you get your attacks in the 8-10 range. after that, excess firepower yields less results and defense more. FInally, if you are going for the grossly outnumbered but technologically superi

response to post 50: your point is great but your conclusion flawed. I also want the AI not to treat the human special. But it DOES right now! My point is that right now the AI DOES treat the human player special by ALLOWING the Human player to buy up all the techs and then sell them off. The human player employs an OBVIOUS strategy the AI does not replicate. Any player worth their salt who makes a decision to sell a tech woudl sell it to nearly every player he or she

I was JUST going to make a post to the same effect of this one! I completely agree with the original author. I just figured out the mentioned trade tactic for myself last game, and it completely ruined it. IT was just retarded. I had a race with +50% diplomacy, and I wouldnt research hardly aything. I would just buy a tech when it showed up for about 1000 BC, and then sell it to the 7 other civs for about 700 BC each netting a total profit 3-4000 BC for any new tech that showe

I want to pipe in that I like the tying max colony number to a tech. Logistics is fine, and I like that, becasue the civ that races just to logistics will end up being handicapped in terms of trade, weapon tech, etc. I like it a lot. And I do think the way it is is HIGHLY problematic becasue it is just too random. If you get lucky and in a good location, it makes it a CAKEWALK. some of the rebuttals have implied that the author and others liek myself are NOT emphasizin

Dont even worry about your home planets. I beat this first try on Challenging. As soon as the DL showed up and were invading planets, it was obvious they were going to kill everything in the sector. So I rush bought at the lowest downpayment rate 2 fleets of fighters, and 8 troop transports. I then just trucked across the very bottom of the map hugging the edge the whole way, then used my flagship to lure the Yor away from their home planet . i then flew in with both squadrons and 4 of my

Hey, one more question since I cant seem to get any of my original posts to show up... Do you guys restart if you get less than 5 colonies in the initial land grab? I have been playing on large, occasional stars, 6 opponents, challenging AIs, and getting crushed. But that might be becasue the last two games I played, I got confined to 4 initial colonies with one class 11, and the rest 7-8. MG

Im just curious what others do if they only manage to colonize 3 planets without any >10 Im playing on large galaxy, occasional stars, abundant habitable worlds, loosly clustered, with 6 opponents all on Challengin AI. I have been having a *&(^*& of a time, although I must say the Wiki is great and has helped me quite a bit understanding the economics and approval. SO one possible reason I am considering is that I usually keep playing no matter what, even if I get a poor p

Has anyone done it WITHOUT a high diplomcy skill? Due to the necessity of tech trading I am beginning to think it is night impossible to keep uo unless you have a very high diplomacy.

How well do these strategies keep up with the arms race ? I played my first game on 'tough' last night and the AI is spanking me soundly in the research department AND trading amonsgt themselves so fast that by the time I get a tech everyone else already has it. MG

Does anyone have advice for mid-level players? I played my first game on Tough today, and the AIs are spanking me soundly. They cover the board with colony ships right away, and I manage to keep up buy buying a few, and then I focus on my economy, but the computer somhow does all of this twice as fast. The AI trades research amongst one another so fast, by the time I get a tech the computer already has it, along with 5 others new techs too. Im fairly early in the game and the AI has got me b

The problem must be your system. I have an old crappy system from 2 1/2 years ago on old drivers and an old GeForce 5800 and win2K and the game STILL runs flawlessly for me. Havnt played on Gigantic maps, but I have finished 4 games on Large maps. No one crash or corruption. PLus the game must be working great on most peoples big-rigs becasue of all of the screenshots of ships with zillions of polys, not to mention I would bet Frogboy and his freinds all play on pretty jazzzed-out sy

I know this is an uber-stupid question, but where are the screenshots saved when I hit PrintScreen? I cant find mine anywhere. Seriously, Im normally smart in the real world and I am terribly embarassed to be asking this question. Thanks for your help in advance MG

THe game doesnt 'crash and crash' for me. In fact this is the most COMPLETE and STABLE game I have bought in years. The problem is your system not in the game. GalCiv runs flawlessly for me, without any of the errors I see on the forum and I have: Athalon 64 3200 Geforce 5800 (I know, I need to upgrade) using onboard sound of my MSI platinum motherboard 1 gig memory Old drivers that I have not updatesd in about a year. Dear Stardock - I love the game, and I love the governors you have built in for large-empire management. Everything has worked just great except for one thing: When I have two rallypoints (say "base 1" and "base 2") and I use the governor to update ships traveling to base 1 to now head towards base 2, all the ships en route just stop, and I have to re-"send" them to the rally points one-by-one. And no, I am careful that I am NOT updating the destination to "none" when I u

It would also be cool if there were a distance to Homeworld morale/loyalty penalty, so that your ourter rim planets would frequently rebel (not necessary defect, just become Pirates). This would also force researchign up the entertainment tree (which is quite expensive) to keep border worlds in-line. Currently the only possible difficulty of border worlds is influence, which can easily be amended by plunking down an influence base (which is jst too easy). I think something like this

Noone has yet given any examples of defense being useful prior to having maxed out logistics, ship size, etc. A 12/0 can easily match an 8/4, plus have the advantage of being of maximal use against everyone. THere is no reason to put anything into defense research untill you have run out of offensive techs in your weapon sequence. I wish defense was something to be considered, It would make ship design more thought provoking, rather than just cram in as many weaponXXX as possible.

I know this is an old post, but it also illustrates two points. One is that is is almost univerally better to crank out large fleets of small ships of total offense, and two, the AI needs to be tweaked to better adapt to player ship styles -> ie researching aggressively on the super-cheap missile defense if an opponent has missiles. I also would like to point out that a lot of the all-offense debate could be ameliorated by making defensive elements take up LESS space than offensive

18 Replies 30,473 Views

I have been pondering this quite a bit as well. As the all offense ship has the inherent advantage of being useful in all situations, vs the blended ship which takes a square root hit against weapons of another tree. So pumping out 10/0 mediums and fleeting them is not only easyer, but usually superior to designing ships with defense becasue it let you stay on the move from planet to planet, race to race. Maybe defense shoudl be given some advantage to justify 'specializing' a sh

The only people who dont seem to support putting some sliders or options on the degree of random events are the poeple who havent had game-ruining events yet. So I am definiteluy in favor of some sort of option, slider, or limit on the power of the random events. THis is a strategy game after all, and while flexibility to respond to new threats is important, If I wanted to play whack-a-mole I'd go to Chuck e Cheeze. MG
