Agreed with the other posters. A few turrets and one (I prefer two) hangar bays is enough to hold pirates at bay while one of your fleets sets course to the attacked world. Also, remember, attack the PILLAGERs first. They are the bombers. Once they are gone the only real harm the pirates can do is to objects in orbit. Your planet is safe. A good player or AI, however, will use a pirate attack to their advantage and sometimes coordinate their attack with the pirates. Gotta
Hi Drish311 and Serondal, when you say you enjoy the diplomacy. What size maps and how many AI players do you use ? To win you have to be the most powerful , once you are the most powerful the AI will concentrate on you. On a large / very large map with 8 AI players this seems to make defence impossible. I dont have any trouble with small maps or few players. One other thing , can you explain the value of a trade alliance , I cant seem to see any additional income.
Hi Chr
Indeed! I have had similar experiences where my allied AI decides to send help when I am in trouble (and I to him) and I never use the AI ping.
Azeltir, Totally see what you mean. If players had a more robust system to make requests of the AI then that could only add more depth. It all depends on the scope of the diplomacy engine and if the dev's looked at diplomacy in its current form more as an RTS than the 4X side of things. What if the developers just don't think that kind of feature fits into the Sins model? We've heard of them overhauling it but we don't know exactly what and how much of the upcoming changes
My experience with Diplomacy: I avoided it altogether at first and locked teams while learning the game. After learning the game I still kept it locked because of what I read here on the forums and from my initial impressions. However, I can say now, that I actually very much like the current diplomatic system. Why? It ADDS depth. Because of the diplomacy system one game will never ever be the same as the other. I've found that you can ignore missions from AI's, but if you
I have never enabled the « Bloom Effects » option because I have 2 year-old GeForce 6800, and because I have read on the forum that enabling that visual option might cause framerate slowdowns. Is that correct, or is it « safe » to enable the option ?
Sorceress, It is most definitely safe to turn it on and see how it impacts your system. The 6800 still isn't a halfway bad card at all and should run Sins fine. Typically for any game the Bloom Effect requires more muscl
Always bump these threads. I've gotten at least 5 people in my gaming clan to get Sins as well.
This is pretty much how beta worked emergeantly without us needing to interfere. I don't know what has happened in the last few weeks to cause this change. I think that any game (or any 'thing' for that matter) that becomes very popular and well known within a certain community will always draw its vocal detractors and trolls. Is that the price for fame and fortune? :)
Thanks so much Napalm. This is particularly rewarding for us today because we've been discussing the problem of the vocal minority dominating our leading threads with negativity that is not shared by the vast majority of the community. Devs/Pubs, Wanted to say thank you for 1.03 and the continued support. The game plays better and smoother. The game feels more balanced to me too. As en example, although less armor and more expensive, I still buy bomber frigs, I just treat them more special. The drastic changes to the Black Market I'm still out on, but whatever you decide to do with it I am sure is the right thing for the game. It is, after all, your baby. Keep up
There are no campaigns in: Civilization series, Master of Orion series, Sword of the Stars, Gal Civ series (well they are, but anyone who plays games knows its the skirmish here too that matters), Battlefield series, Team Fortress 2. I think there are many other games than these that do not have a single player scripted campaign. The OP has no valid arguement here. His problem is that he did not educate himself before making a purchase. If $40 is that valuable to the OP then he
Depends on your video card. If its Nvidia you should have the Nvidia Control Panel. If its ATI I believe its called ATI Catalyst. On the Nvidia control panel, find the Global settings tab. On there at the top will be some settings such as Anistropic Filtering and Antialias Filtering, etc. By default they are set to "Application Controlled" which is typically what you should have it at. Change and then Apply the Anistropic Filter value. Typical choices are 2X, 4X, 8X, 16X.
I'd like to know this too. Right now, whenever I don't want icons of any kind, I activate Cinematic Mode. Give that a shot, it works well.
Hello everyone, Sins options/effects lets you configure up to 4x Anti-aliasing but doesn't let you control anistropic filtering. I have a high end system: quad-core cpu, 2gb ram, 750i nforce motherboard, 1 Nvidia 8800 GT. Last night I forced Anistropic from "Application Controlled" to 4x and then up to 8x. I have to tell you that this ups the graphical quality of the game noticeably. The highly refined texture mapping reveals details that you don't noti
Well deserved and congratulations. With Galactic Civilizations II last year and Sins this year, I think Stardock should be looking at some kind of "Publisher of the Year" Award. If I had one to give I would give it. Stardock has built a reputation with me that will have me go buy any of their games if it looks even halfway decent (until they do something to make me loose it). The developer and publisher support and contact with the community is a model that any other gaming
I'd be in on that too. I also have teamspeak and ventrillo access for chatting. My player name in ICO is Pon.
Philly, Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. You helped me to figure it out. The whole thing seems odd. First, I had no other account but created another one also with admin rights. I switched to it and found with both accounts that I could do nothing to \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\. I couldn't even access it as I was getting "Access Denied" from both admin accounts. I could uncheck Read Only and click apply but when I would reopen it it would be r
Can anyone help with this? I don't understand why I cannot make the Documents folder writeable. I can't even access the folder. With this problem I can't installing WB6.0 which I purchased last night. Thanks again.
This might go along with my other message, but I have Win XP and purchased WindowBlinds 6.0. When the installation tries to copy files to my Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\ it fails because that Documents folder is write protected and even I as administrator can't alter those properties. Is there any way to work around this? I'd like to be able to install the application onto Windows XP or as a XP user should I not use version 6? Thanks.
Hi I purchased WindowBlinds 6.0. I am trying to install it. I have Windows XP SP2. Halfway through the installation it says that it can't write files. It is trying to write files to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\StarDock\WindowBlinds\ Unfortuantely, and I have verified this, the directory \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents has "read Only" priviledges. I am unable to take off the read only property. I cannot myself create or remove fil
Ahh that makes a lot of sense. I agree with you there. There could have been more advanced options for fleet control. I also don't use the weapon bank settings at all really. Maybe with another patch they will continue to enhance it. With regards to them staying/keeping in formation, if you select ships as a group and move them as a
I like Sword of the Stars. It's the spiritual successor to Master of Orion 1. It's strategic map is simplified. You control the planet development with sliders. They really put the focus on ship design, tech research, and the tactical battles. The user interface is simplified but in no way means that the game itself is simplified. Once you spend a little time with it you discover there's actually alot of depth under the hood, mainly focusing on ship design and tactical battles. The game d
I agree with the others about tech trading. I don't tech trade too heavily but I do trade for a tech here and there. I also usually try to tech trade with the civs I think I will want to ally with. Even with just a little tech trading eventually you will start to get ahead of your opponents if you also have a focus on research. I also am judicial about what techs I do trade. If its something I don't want the other civs to have then I don't trade i
Gal Civ 2 is a great game and continues to get great reviews. In GameSpy, there is a interview with Sid Meier and Soren Johnson of Firaxis about the state of PC gaming and Soren, the lead dev of Civ 4, mentioned Brad and the gang at StarDock: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GameSpy: Soren mentioned limited developer resources, which brings me to my next question.
