No....... seems they do it more than once now. Played a game last night. At one point, they started putting Aeron PD on their smaller ships, so I switched to mass drivers. Later, some of them started having Zero Point Armor. FYI .... if your fighter has Stinger missiles and your enemy has Aeron point defense ...... RUN!

Be careful what you wish for. Pirates are NASTY. Far worse than Dread Lords, Drengin or anyone else. They generally have weapons and defenses equal to whatever you've researched when they spawn, BUT..... They have INSANE, IMPOSSIBLE logistics and miniaturization. I've seen pirate fleets with logistics of 72, with every friggin slot filled. Dreadnoughts, battleships, frigates, heavy fighters and hordes of escort fighters, all packed with impo

I just played "Dread Lords on Parade" for the first time since installing Beta 4. You guys made them smarter, didn't you? That's my favorite scenario, so I've played it many times. Assuming I survive at all, it's because I build missile heavy fighters and beat them with numbers. Last night I tried that and started winning just like usual. I got to the point that I was blockading Amalda and destroying any ship leaving the planet.

These ships are folding space-time, not firing chemical rockets. They don't actually move, technically speaking. Space warps around them and deposits them into a new location. Think of two dots on a balloon. Add more air and the dots end up further apart, but they aren't actually moving - the balloon is. With these ships, the balloon is space-time. Adding more engines means they can warp space-time to a greater degree and they end up furthe

You need a Neutral alignment (obviously) and then to research as far as Research Academy. Then it'll be next in the tech tree. And when you get them, replace ALL other research facilities with them and don't worry about what they cost. They can produce more research than even a Discovery Sphere, long before you ever get as far researching DS. NLC = 22 TP Discover Sphere = 20 TP

Yeah, the range is a little messed up. Mars is usually about 3 parsecs away from Earth in this game, although in reality that would put it way beyond Alpha Centauri. One parsec = 3.26 light years. They had to sacrifice something to make it playable. Maybe it would have been better to call the parsecs light hours or AU or something.

I've found that you have to create the rally point and set the planet to use that rally point BEFORE you begin building. Otherwise some of the ships will launch but won't move toward the rally point. Maybe that's a bug, but either way it's pretty annoying.

Yeah, whoever initiates the attack gets the first firing pass and the other side can't shoot back until they're done. Even with lesser warships, you can usually beat an enemy by always attacking first. Just look at their movement points and position yourself just outside that range. If they move towards you, they'll just deliver themselves into an ambush. Just make sure you're not firing missiles into a bunch of ships with Aeron point defen

Factories are important whether you're building anything or not, playing nice or planning to conquer the galaxy. If you've allowed someone to become more powerful than you and they declare war, you're going to have to build as much as possible as quickly as possible. Otherwise the war will not end until they wipe you out. As long as the planet is making far more money than it's using up, don't worry about what the factories cost. Unless you'

No, I've won a diplomatic victory where I'm the only one allied to everyone. Some of the other civs were still at war with each other. I only did it because I was bored with that particular game and wanted to start a new one.

Build one with as many ship assist modules as you can put on, then fight a battle under its protection. It adds incredible firepower and defenses to your ships. I once slaughtered a huge armada of Drengin and Arcean battleships/frigates with nothing but fighters. That was before any of the betas came out, so I don't know if it still has the same power. @ Inept... I usually launch scouts from my colonies and put them on guard duty

That was for a small hull heavy fighter. I forget what level of mini tech I had, but it couldn't have had been much. That was fairly early in that game. Here's the whole screenshot (dialup warning): http://www.mikehealan.com/pix/ss/tristron2.jpg If mini tech was going to effect the size, wouldn't it effect the next level by the same amount? The next gen armor ought to be different in at least one way. Cheaper, smaller, tougher... something.<

I'm running Beta 4. This is what I see when upgrading/designing ships. Both of those armors at the top have exactly the same properties. That can't be right.

The bugs I mentioned above seem to be limited to only when you start the game with the "cheat" parameter. Starting it normally doesn't cause those bugs to happen. I have something else now. I seem to be getting a LOT of crashes, all of which end with this in the debug file: Debug Message: Ship does not have a valid ship class in CalcTotalMoves. Setting moves to 0. Debug Message: Ship does not have a valid ship class in C

I cheated and got all the techs. And now when I tell it to stop building a ship, it starts building a Ranger. I noticed in Beta 3 that when you told it build nothing, it showed the stats for a Ranger, but it didn't build one. I can't seem to tell any planet to stop building ships without going to the civilization governor. I spotted another problem too. I've invaded and taken a bunch of planets. Right near the end, it wouldn't let me use exi

I might have hit a bug in beta 4. I went to the governor screen to tell all planets to start building Defenders, then when they built one, I'd go to the planet's build button to make it stop, only it wouldn't stop until I went back to the governors screen and updated all planets to stop building. It's done that with two new games I've started. Debug Message: Version v1.1 BETA 4 last updated on: Wed Apr 12 18:45:12 2006 Debug Message:

I'm surprised to see this thread's still alive. I understand what is going on now. The smaller fighters are ESCORTS. You have to blast your way through any escorts before you can get to the capital ship being escorted. I get that now. As for it making more sense to attack fighters first instead of battleships, because you CAN kill them, that's way off. In a fight to the death, you don't want cheap kills, you want to win. Take out the dreadnought and you remove a massive we

On DL on parade or Apocalypse, I stay the hell away from them until I have Phasors. So the Cargo thing works then. But if you're talking early game, then yes small fighters are the best. You forgot the importance of soldiering techs against DL. With Tir-Quan, Advanced Plan. Def, and Shock Troops, they won't touch you.

13 Replies 15,517 Views

Research all the planetary defense AND offense techs. Both tech trees give you soldiering bonuses. Depending on how concerned you are with your ethical alignment, you can always choose those ethical choices that give you soldiering bonuses. I think the planetary invasion ratio is backwards. You can't invade into an area that has far more troops, even with better tech. You need a pretty serious numerical advantage to invade an enemy. <br

Telling beginners to pick evil choices without fully explaining the consequences could lead to some disgruntled players. Good point. I can update it for that. I disagree that it's cheating, but it's debatable. Remember, this is for newbies who can't play well, not for experts who laugh at

I wrote a strategy guide aimed at newbies and other players who can't seem to win the game. Experts might find a useful tip or two. What I can't figure out is why it completely disables the ability to do it automatically just because it can't find anything new in the current range. Sooner or later that range is going to increase, then you have to build an entirely new ship to replace the one that's broken.

I once surrendered to the Altarians by accident. The game was getting stuttery and wasn't registering clicks immediately, and I didn't notice that it had put "surrender" down there. What I meant to do was give them money to help them fight the Drengin. ugh.... If they only have a couple of planets left, make peace. Then move your transports as close as possible to their worlds and take them out with a massive sneak attack. I've done that to
