Actually if I'm not mistaken the damage is split up, the front laser does 50% (so about 9 damage) and the side lasers do 25% each (so about 4.5 each). This means if you don't position it right it actually does less damage then the other LRFs.

Just got the game a few days ago, and while I want to love it I can't seem to get anywhere at all. Every game but 1 I've played so far I've ended up just quitting because I am a bajillion credits in debt and can't build/research anything.
