Elemental never looked great to me (even though I own all the GalCiv stuff, Demigod, and Sins), so I didn't preorder it. After the debacle, I simply didn't pay in depth attention to whether it was getting any better. I knew it was being reworked, that Derek Paxton was brought in, and it was being given away to those who preordered, but it wasn't until the recent sale that I took the time to REALLY read up on it. I have to say, the new names (Fallen Enchantress and FE: Lege

Again, it depends on what one considers "necessary to work". People's definition of what's necessary differs. -HM
Frogboy already said in this thread, that a non-Steam release is not going to happen. So, all I'm asking for now is, that GalCiv 3 not require the client to be running in order to play. That isn't unreasonable, is it?
It might be. They may actually want to use Steam features that necessitate Steam running. I know some games, like FTL, do not need Steam running. Even though I installed FTL using a Steam key, I can
Ah WON...second time that's been mentioned to me over the last seven days. Memories. -HM
I've been a Steam user since day 1...to play Counter-Strike 1.6. If you think it's bad now, you should've seen it then! -HM
They are. If you mouse over the link for the installer, a pop-up will appear with the version-number mentioned at the top.
I saw the installers had a version number, but I couldn't easily figure out what the latest version of the games actually is to confirm. No big deal...I installed all three GalCiv2 games via Gamestop last weekend and it went fine. It was a bizarre coincidence that I decided to reinstall
Like Cikomyr, even though I was a Stardock fanboy, I didn't buy preorder Elemental (for me, it simply didn't appeal, for a multitude or reasons I'm sure others have already expressed). And of course, due to what happened, I was happy I didn't. But the Steam sale this weekend, plus what I've read about the 3rd iteration, swayed me. I played for a couple of hours last night and it seemed pretty good. Definitely worth $10. -HM
Whoops, goofed post.

One reason Elemental is still troubling is because, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, people lost their jobs due to it. While in the end the customer made out ok, some Stardock employees paid a high price for some very poor choices during game development. -HM
Gaunathor has the same issue with LH, so not sure why the Steam depot implies otherwise. Again, I personally don't care, but just thought I'd relay the information to others. And I installed my GalCiv2 through Impulse/Gamestop (yep, I'm an old customer, like many of us), so that runs standalone just great. It's a great deal to get a Steam key for only $5 right now for the GalCiv 2 bundle, but I'm not one of those crazy people that has to buy games multiple times...
I just bought Legendary Heroes ($10...too cheap to pass up) and tested it too. Yep...the LH executable will instantly call steam.exe (unlike my copy of FTL, which does not). Personally I don't care. On the surface I disagree with it, but I've been a Steam user since day 1 so I'm used to having a single place to install, patch, and launch my games. Yeah, convenience has corrupted me! -HM
Brad, there are plenty of games on Steam that you at least need it (Steam) running from the get-go. If you try to launch the game executable with Steam not running, Steam comes up. But there are a handful I have, like FTL, which let me run the executable and Steam does NOT try to launch (i.e. for FTL, Steam is simply a delivery service, and not as DRM-y as it used to be). I don't know what happens with your games that are now on Steam, since I bought them all directly through Star
Fortunately they've stated they'll let us know when preorders will be cut off, so there's still time for them to get some solid info out to me as to what I'll be missing out on if I don't preorder. I'm open to change. :) -HM
In a different thread I started, I asked what the delivery would be, and Island Dog said Steam, and there would be no boxed version. Also, if you look at the bottom of this page: https://www.galciv3.com/store It says, " All game code will be delivered through Steam when available." So at this point, it sounds like they plan on delivering it exclusively through Steam. Anything can change though. -HM
No competitors...Beamdog, GOG, Origin, Gamestop (Impulse), and UPlay. Unless you meant quality competitors then I see your point. (Ok I like GOG)
Effectively no competitors. :) -HM
It sounds like Brad's problem is he didn't know how to handle the company once he decided to grow more and branch out into other areas. It's too bad of course...I liked how Impulse worked and that I didn't have to have it running once the game was installed. Steam needs competitors, and right now it has almost none. Brad will have to do more than write an essay to convince me that this "new" Stardock is better than what I've seen over the last few years. -H
I feel the same as a lot of others here. Fan since GalCiv1, but unhappy how the Demigod thing went (and yes, I'm aware they weren't the developer). Sins of a Solar Empire went pretty well. Elemental didn't interest me (never liked the art style), so it was the first game with Stardock's name on the title I didn't buy, and I have to say, I'm happy I made that decision. Somewhere in there they also sold Impulse off, and embraced Steam, which was just peculiar, although I
I don't have Steam hatred. I've been a user since day one, to install Counter-Strike 1.6. Just because you don't have to use it again doesn't mean it's not drm. Regardless, I started the thread simply to ask how the game is being distributed. Note I never said anything good nor bad regarding the answer that was given to me. The fact that this has gotten derailed into an argument regarding what is drm, what isn't, whether a service should be used to instal

Ah, I was looking at store.stardock.com ( https://store.stardock.com/product/ESD-SDE-W036 ). The note about Steam is actually at the bottom of https://www.galciv3.com/store . Cool. -HM
The title pretty much says it all. It looks like if we go to order, it's distributed digitally, but it doesn't say via what service (now that the days of Stardock Central and Impulse are long gone for Stardock), and if we'll have the option to buy a physical copy. -HM
