If nothing else, AIs should be somewhat sentimental about their capital worlds, desperately focusing on regaining a lost world through conflict and negotiations. If it were turned into a gameplay mechanic, perhaps there could be immediate empire wide morale and economic losses. These losses would recover over time... to an extent. Fully restoring morale and the economy would require retaking the capital.

I fail to see how anything you said, even if completely accurate, makes his post "rubbish", as nothing you say contradicts it. In fact, putting your two posts together, all you're saying is that American society is doomed by litigation.
Those components have been in the latest beta, actually, and I've got mixed feeling about them. One one hand, they DO make the Yor ships look FAR better than they did before. On the other hand, the Yor components were some of my favourite "generic" pieces, as they were practically the only ones that allowed you to make a ship look sleek and elegant with lots of curves (the Thalan/Drath components don't count, as they tend towards spikier ships instead of elegant ones). Obviously, the ol
...YOR. Damn, I've always loved playing them. Time to party! Now, to find time.
Perhaps, but their AIs are extremely limited at best.... they'd need an upgrade to be anywhere near as believable as current major race AIs, let alone competent opponents.
What would be really interesting is if the capital was completely permanent, and you suffered some kind of penalty for being without a capital. It would make the capital a more strategically interesting planet.
Don't the Torians get ENOUGH love as it is? Rabbits look like prudes by comparison.
Aw, damn, DENIED. I'll get you next time, Dystopic.
Well, apparently the lack of differentiation will be addressed this week.
It is highly irresponsible of you guys to be rolling out new betas weekly during exam season. Yes, I'm shifting the blame for my addiction to you.
Yet not for the reasons you stated. I'd love to play it, especially with the expansion out, but I remember something from the beta: you have to be willing to spend the time to get decent before it's really worth the investments, since the game is tough on newbies past that whole "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THE SIZE OF MY ARMY" stage... resource management is a tricky affair. Quite frankly, I don't have that time. Outside of second
I'm finding the tech rates to be absolutely absurd, myself, on the lower levels. I'm not even sure that part of the game setup screen is WORKING.
As I understand it, their technology is supposed to be focusing on quantity over quality (such as ship components that are less effective, but far cheaper). I'm not really seeing a whole lot of that. Maybe they could have a line of techs specifically for decreasing ship cost (something along the lines of "mass fabrication" would do wonders).
Lets not forget a freaking nasty influence building, a DIRECT line to high end beam techs (I am really hoping that's a bug to be sorted out once Ion Beam is in...), and spore ships once they get implemented. Also, since the Aul incinerator is currently bugged and INCREASES planet quality... just yikes.
Some of the bugs that are driver related just boggle my mind.
Just to repeat what everyone else is saying, it's the gameplay, not the graphics. Everyone would be still playing even if the game was displayed in an astounding 16 colours! The ABSURDLY well balanced races, the wide variation in strategies, Battle.net, and the rich universe are all point in its favour.
Ah, jeez, I can't believe I forgot: the Korath don't have spore tech! Germ warfare is in there, but no spore modules.
The big thing here is that the Aul incinerator is GIVING tiles, not removing them! Planet quality goes up after it's construction. Also, a strange bug I encountered: I got the dread lords mega event, and they decided to take over one of MY planets instead of an empty one. The result... my planet was overwritten, the planet and star were renamed to Amalga and all the improvements were written over with industrial sectors. However, my ships remained in orbit, yet I couldn't deorbit them!
Trade needs a bit of an increase (that said, the Korx haven't made themselves known yet) and the influence cash is pushing it a bit. It's free money, with no morale penalty or trade routes to manage, and it equals or exceeds my tax income!
I suspect that rounding had a significant effect on your result.
I agree, being able to modify racial colours in game would be a fantastic addition! I remember a few times where I made a decision that was... HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE during race creation, but was forced to stick with it through the game even though my interface was unusable and my ships looked ugly.
Perhaps a single, relatively small scale change is in order: Instead of the ship range being (shipSupportModules + rangeRacialAbility), turn it into (shipSupportModules * (100% + rangeRacialAbility)), so that the new range abilities you get in the techs and ability bonuses amplify the effects of your support modules instead of setting the baseline.
Even a more charitable race would have an overwhelming advantage in an invasion. Space superiority is handy that way... it means you can drop your troops anywhere, anytime, with fantastic intelligence, AND you have heavenly artillery on demand.
I'd love it if invasions took some time to carry out. Greater distinction between the invasion techniques could follow from that, since some end battles quickly (orbital bombardments and tidal disruption tend to do that) while others take a large amount of time (traditional and information warfare). More options could be added, as well. Off the top of my head: *A quick, dirty invasion option that provides a PENALTY to your troops *A drawn out seige that practically guarantees victory
