When I was thinking of jettisoning tanks/engines I was thinking in terms of continual thrust while jetisoning (pretty much just like the space shuttle). One thing that we haven't mentioned, and I'm not sure how relevant it would be to space only flight, but It may be significant to the slingshot, would be the Mass of the ship. Looks like there are no fusion or fission rockets. I think that is our key problem with the propulsion here. Currently, Nuclear devices are our most destructive weapons. well the edge of the cloud it what 100,000 AU (10 to the 5th right?), and A centauri is 1,000,000 AU, so not really halfway, more like 1/10th away. I do have to agree that the major killer of all our economy, information, contact ideas is the time/distance problem. Like millertime pointed out, that is a mjor problem. When it take 20 years to receive word that your money transfer was received, well 20 years is a long time to wait for anything.
