I like reading negative reviews. They often do a good job of selling the game for me--if the complaints make no damn sense, I usually get the game. The graphics thing is a good example--if people dislike the graphics in GC2, and I don' care, that bad review would basically not be saying anything bad--hell, it's almost a compliment. What if I had a lower-end computer and needed worse graphics to play it at all? For a better ( but long and rambling and basically pointless ) exampl

I know this would add to micromanagemaent but really just too much cheese as is. Okay, how ? Are you actually suggesting that it would make more sense for people to build a ship and then set off charges all over it than it would for them to leave the new parts undamaged? Seriously, why the hell would you build a

Who knows. Maybe Stardock is really run by the CIA and they're creating games to get access to our hard drives. Or maybe even something more sinister perhaps,,,,,,? Yeah, but they could do that anyway, so who cares? Besides, seems like a fair trade to me: I get to play GCII, they get to see a bunch of saved files from gamefaqs. "Oh noes, he's

I actually advise NEVER defending your planets with ships in orbit as long as you have a military left (if you don't have any military, a bunch of junk ships in orbit can stall the AI while you rush build). If your planets are technically undefended, the AI--even at the very highest difficulty levels--will send its transports unescorted to make "attacks of opportunity" against your "undefended" worlds. If you're paying attention, which you should be, you can simply pick them off with yo

They could "fix" it by not healing the ships when they are upgraded. Well, they could . But since this is the only way to repair a ship in less than 4 turns--by any means--they really shouldn't. If we could use constructors to repair ships and starbases (which would be somewhat balanced in that constructors take significant time and money to

At 80% taxes, one Advanced Farm and one VR Center makes an entirely happy planet most of the time, and it's an efficient use of tiles. I'm fine with farms as-is. I have to admit, though, I small growth bonus per farm would really be nice. It's not like it would unbalance anything, the AI would have it too.

The bonuses are actually 10%, 20%, and 30% for governments other than Imperial. Will that description be fixed in the next version? It'd be nice, I still forget from time to time. Of course, the Diplomacy and Influence bonuses from the techs are worth getting them, even if you didn't need the economy. But still, a fix would be nice.

I'd LOVE the ability to repair starbases with constructors. I'd love the ability to repair regular ships with constructors too, actually. Also, I think military and resource/mining starbases should have an additional weapon, armor, and hit points set of modules available, due to their combat-oriented nature. It doesn't make sense for my Wal*Marts to have the same armament and defenses as my military bases, but the econ/inf bases die too fast already, so they certainly shouldn't be wea

I've played about 5 games on Tough and higher since 1.2 came out. In each game, multiple AI races have reached the second-to-last tech in one or more Defense lines, and in each case the AI switched to a different line without finishing the best tech in the current line. This happens consistently (to me at least) and only applies to defenses.

The AI in my games (Tough and higher) makes ships with upwards of 20 defense on their main defense and around 5 on the other two (and yes, that's each ship, not fleets). So... huh? Personal bug, maybe?

I've noticed, on several occaisons, that some planets don't seem to grow very fast. I've actually been paying specific attention lately, and I've discovered that it's pretty simple--any planet of PQ 5 or lower "only" gains 1 million (0.001 billion) people per week, even with my +120% reproduction rate. It's easy enough to transport more people in (especially with my bonuses in my most recent game), but I've never heard anything about this. Is it normal?

2 Replies 5,775 Views

That is one reason never to build a farm on a farm bonus tile, unless you also have room for 6-8 virtual reality centers as well. A single Advanced Xeno Farm can support 15b with only a single VR center - none if you have a morale resource or two and a few of the morale improvements combined with a stock exchange or two. The tax rate varies this

I sometimes use military starbases to make a strong point in my planetary defenses, but I never expect a starbase to hold an area on its own. Now, when I'm REALLY bored, I'll put 16 military starbases in a sector corner and give them all both of the ship speed boosters, thus giving any ship that reaches the area the ability to "jump" an extra 32 parsecs to get something going in short order (usually an invasion or a defense redistribution). It's not efficient, but it can be amusing onc

1) I'd REALLY like to have larger maps, but my computer can't handle them. Bah. Still, you can make your own, and there's also Epic in the Custom list for a couple games if you don't want to design your own. (Epic is two sectors larger than Gigantic in both dimensions, but it's unfortunately always the same.) 2) I know I'm not the only one who wants the ability to increase the difficulty during the later parts of the game. Come on Stardock, is it that hard? <table cellpaddi

Main problem with this one is I never know what planet is hosting it in my empire until the prison break happens. It's in the UP tab on your Foreign Relations window. I always vote it on someone else, but it's not that bad when it happens to me. I just put a couple ships one square away from the planet and frag the prisoners when they e

Almost a super-awesome idea, but not so much. I'd really like what you're going for (effectively larger galaxies), but this wouldn't do it. Both myself and the computers would end up with the range tech anyway, thus giving the same result as the current situation but slower. I think this option should be implemented, but the change would be to the actual bonuses rather than the cost/tim

I usually play with labs used for production in my games. See, the NLC gives 22 research and the Industrial Sector only gives 18 manufacturing. So setting research at 100% and focusing actually gives you better numbers in both research and production than setting research at 75% and (either) production at 25%, plus it doesn't gimp any unusual planets you might have in the same fashion as the traditional monkeying with percentage sliders would. When you un-focus, if ever, you en

I think you get shafted here. I suggest simply not playing that scenario. You can half-fake it by playing with Very Fast research and giving away all the techs once you get the whole tree, but it's not really the same. (It's nice to not be Humies, though.)

I've had Scottlingas and Jessuins take over major races before. I have two uses for minors, though I only use the first minor I find (and simply invade the rest). 1) Trade routes with an allied minor race are often very, very profitable. 2) You can donate planets to an allied minor race to prevent your enemies from ever getting them, which saves you the trouble of managing the planet, hinders your enemies, and clears up the minimap. I usually do this on Gigantic maps

You can do standard trade with tech trading off. Tech trading only cuts off the trading of techs, it doesn't stop freighters. I personally use Minors as a planet-management system. I don't want to have to personally manage dozens of planets when I start invading, so I ally to a minor and gift them whatever planets I want to be safe from enemies.
