really, it's not hard to figure out the AI on tough, and you don't need an advanced degree in optimization (though, if you actually had one, I'm sure you would have found an optimal strategy by now ) there are many ways to jump out of the blocks, and people here have shown a few. take some time to figure out the game and what you can do with it.. then worry about if the AI is cheating <im

always played as a custom race, since I didn't find a fast starter in the mix. Though, I noticed that the custom races tend to have less that the rest. and preseeing 'reset' to start picks again may delete any basic boni (like soldiering/loyalty), or maybe there's an extra bug in that area, not sure

I had the same thing on the 3rd mission in the campaign with a 'tough' difficulty. the AI would build ships with mass shields (progressively larger shields) but wouldn't add even the tiniest laser... as the User starts with 3 attack ships in the 3rd misson, I just shipped them off to the AI's home planet and blew away anything that existed. you can have all the shileds in the world, it just means it takes longer to kill you if you don't have a weapon yourself.

I design survey ships all the time with just having Sensors tech. I'm sure, but the list of required techs for a Survey Ship include both

Stardock's lack of QA aside (yes this does look like an open source project, and not a real companies product, but hey, even the big companies leave a tonne of crap in the game despite their QA) parts of the tech tree I'd like fixed, which falls under fix not mod, is the parts about requirements for ships etc. Why exactly does the program believe I need both Sensors and Sensors IV for a Survey ship?

I might hav missed it, but I think no one mentioned the Political Capital. a measureable increase in morale for a large planet (and some influence). I use the farming tiles often on larger planets. add in lots of morale related boni, and a tax rate of 50-68 and I'm fine.

Is there a waqy to tweak this? on large maps, or smaller, there's always at least 1 empire stuck behind some one else. I've also seen an empire stuck in the corner, bc there wasn't a single star with habitable planets within starting range for a colony ship. meanwhile, there will be lots of open space with planets off to one side, and it's a race between the two empires that are closest to it to see who fills it first. can the starting locations get tweaked a bit to p

Did the AI get dumb or something, or was it always that way on 'Normal'? I've only had the game for a week, and I've never had the 'noob get's pwned by AI' usual start on new games... For instance on my current game (common evrything, AI allowed to eat my CPU) I out colonized most of the AI empires, have never needed to buy defense ships, and have flipped alot of planets with Influence bases... You would think that they'd be upset that i'm driving deep into everyone's areas and

hmm.. this does sound like a system used by other games... and that was awhile ago, so I think StarDock should be able to figure it out if they want to put it in. I do like this idea, and it will provide a really nice shift away from 'simplicity'. And terraforming really should exist somewhere in the tech tree. as for the AI learning to colonize certain planets, well.. it wou

hey, the download went well I'll find out tonite if the game works though (I apparently went straight to the latest beta patch, is it good for use?) as per the Serial Number: yeah, that worked well. Maybe they should adjust the text on that page to reflect the other areas that are getting the

I bought this game yesterday from Futureshop, and am now on my 2nd copy (returned the first) that doesn't work. they both have the same issue: When I put CD #1 in the drive to install the game, it spins up the drive, and promptly locks up my computer. only way out is to eject the disc. the first attempt revealed that the system could not open the setup.exe file on the CD. after coming here, I saw that people were getting told to get the downloading software, and do it
